terrifying news
« on: March 08, 2016, 06:47:54 AM »
This thread is for where you put nightmare fuel from the pages of reputable news sources about the impending collapse of our civilization or just really terrible night sweat inducing terror.

This one checks a lot of boxes for me:

1. anti-biotic overuse/abuse
2. superbug
3. poop
4. unsafe water
5. hospitals

ENJOY!

Working in the power industry, I can say that trying to turn off the grid via cyberattacks might be one of the harder things to do. Even though the article is incredibly vague, it is true that the grid and it's protection is highly varied from one plant to another, and one company to another. There are standards that guide how to do this, but it's implementation is all over the place. There are pressure points as with anything, but the worst you're going to have is some localized outages and then restoration. Nothing worse than a big storm in a particular area.

The comments in that story are pretty  too, people are so stupid when it comes to how their grid works, but then again, it is amazingly complex.

You guys know Israel kept rough ridin' up Iran's nuclear centrifuge with an autonomous virus right?  It moves on it's own, replicates and finds its way to PLC's controlling important crap.

I am very concerned about this story, but overall am not worried about life on Earth ending.  This checks several boxes for me:

1. birth defects
2. ubiquity of threat
3. bugs
4. indeterminate time someone can be a carrier

ISIS is controlled by Israel?  Big, if true.

2. Dentists
Odds: 1.67
Most people don’t particularly enjoy going to the dentist, but most can tough it out in order to get clean teeth. The dental field is considered extremely competitive and requires significant technical skill to deliver optimal oral care. Like doctors, dentists work in a field that is rife with stress from working long hours and complaints from patients.

Researchers suggest that dentists are nearly 1.67 times as likely to commit suicide compared to an average job. There are many factors that likely contribute to this increased risk of suicide including: stress, demanding nature of the job, patient complaints, perfectionism, and even loans to pay off from dental school. Many new dentists enter the field with significant debt and overwork themselves in attempt to pay it off – not realizing that they are sacrificing their personal health.

Sure being a dentist can result in a significant income, but not many people realize the degree of stress that most dentists experience. Couple these factors with ease of access to various drugs and a well rounded pharmacological knowledge, and committing suicide becomes an easy prospect. Additionally, dentists are believed to suffer from higher rates of mental illness due to stress, but are less likely than average to seek out help for their condition.

I'm not sure how a dentist sucking on a tail pipe has any impact on the future doom of civilization.  maybe I'm missing something?

Working in the pentesting industry I can tell you those variances make a huge difference from plant to plant.  Most are not nearly as secure as you would think.

As mrs.hamburg is pregnant, this scares the crap out of us.

A girl I know, who is in the early stages of pregnancy, canceled her trip to Jamaica for this reason.

Does Zika only affect your pregnancy if you get it while you are pregnant? Or if you get Zika (and there is no cure), can it affect a future pregnancy? If the latter, then these countries' plans to tell women to not get pregnant for a few years isn't going to work....

I don't think anyone knows much of anything about Zika right now.
