Windows 8
« on: November 03, 2012, 02:14:17 AM »
Anyone convert with the recent promos?
K-State students can get a pretty sweet deal on it too.

As for my initial impression....I know this OS is suppose to use less resources, operate cleaner, and be more efficient, but it is rough ridin' awful with user experience, apps are horrid and unpolished (netflix  :shakesfist:) and there are a lot of integration issues.

I'm running it. Its better than Windows 7 in pretty much every way. I don't use the Metro apps.

I don't see how anyone can experience this better than 7.  Honestly awful for me so far. Quite frankly the release candidate was far superior.

Apps have been horrid and I wish I didn't have to use them, but things like netflix have kicked me over to the app instead of the web portal.

How are you dealing with the start bar?  I've found this to be a useful add on. https://www.pokki.com/

Two other side issues

Anyone had issue with Java installing through chrome?

Also anyone know if you can kick an app to a secondary screen, for instance kicking netflix over to a 2nd monitor so you can still work off the main desktop?

I don't use any stupid additions, stock W8. Except I disable the transparent charms bar hint. There is no point to run the metro apps on a decent x86 machine. Apps were created because phone/tablets suck too much ass to be able to run simple crap in a web browser.

You don't have to use the apps. Did you not just read that I don't use any of them? Also, how was the RC superior? I think you are just making crap up at this point.

What integration issues are you referring to?

Click the top off the app and drag it to the 2nd monitor.

Okay how do I get around this? Using Chrome off the desktop, not chrome via app.

And I know that win 8 is designed for touch applications, I've only read good things about the version the surface is using.

Thanks for the grab and go tip.  I was at the corners and not getting the hand, maybe I didn't let it settle long enough.

Integration issues: I've had the netflix app crash multiple times, java as noted in my second post, chrome and flash.

I also find it absurd that there are something you can do in the desktop version that you specifically cannot do in the app version.

It has some cool features. I won't personally be going to it for a bit.

This is the first OS since 2000 that hasn't been a day 1 upgrade for me.

I have two copies. I got in on the $15 upgrade scam. It works well on my HTPC. I'm still iffy on my laptop though. I really don't want to even bother. Everything takes so much longer than in Windows 7.

38.88 at Microcenter.

Also, lol at the puds who hate on Windows 8 and provide no justification.

I have no clue why your computer is doing that, I can watch Netflix just fine through the site. The "version" of Windows that the Surface is using is identical (few things disabled that you wouldn't need on a tablet), it just can't run x86 apps. And Netflix app crashing isn't an integration issue, you may want to look up the definition of that word.

Anyone found a Start screen background tweaker that works with the final release of Windows 8? Really want to use a customized picture, not their stupid stock designs. tia
