Tourette's Etiquette (edited)
« on: October 30, 2012, 02:12:26 PM »
Last night I am feeling lazy and decide to make a quick stop at a Panda Express and get a bite to eat. (mistake one)  There is a pretty big line but I figure I'm not in a hurry.  I can wait. (mistake two)

A perfectly normal looking Asian gentleman who appears to be in his late 30's comes in and is in line directly behind me.  I'm BBSing and Twittering on my phone minding my own business when...

"WHIIIIIMMMUU FUUUUUUUUCKK" "ISHH GOOOOO"  "GAAA GAAA GAAA" "eff eff!"

This guy goes on like this for at least 3 solid minutes.  Mostly just grunts and gibberish with the occasional "eff!". I'm like...  :sdeek: but just keep looking at my phone because I'm pretty much  and :frown:.   There is a little girl her mom in front of me in the line who looks like she's about to either  or  :bawl: and  :runaway:.  The guy must have noticed because he apparenlty tried turning it off.  Istead of F bombs I hear.  "PFFFFFFFFFFT!!!!  :zip: PBBBBBBBBBBBBTTTTT!!! PBBBBBAAAATTTTT"  :zip: . It takes me a moment to realize what he's doing and at first I was  :sdeek: but then I wanted to .  I kept my cool and just ignored the hell out of all of it and kept looking at the phone.  :dubious: .

Once I'm through the line and paying I hear him placing his order.  Dude just rattles it off like no problem and sounds completely fine.  Voice smooth as butter.  :horrorsurprise: . I couldn't believe it.  He pays and goes over to fill up his drink and as he's walking out it's three more "FUUUUCKKKK!!! GRRAAAAAFFFFUUUUUCKKK!"

As I ate it wondered... If I'd just said hi to the guy and carried on a conversation with him would it have saved him the  of his  and prevented him from having to  :zip:

Are all Tourettes folks able to just talk and stuff or is it best to leave them alone?   :dunno:

I watched a documentary about tourette's people and it made me sad.

Also, I am afraid that if confronted with a loud tourette's person I would think they were faking or just being a dick.

But to answer your question, Tourette's is very variable in how it presents.  Tic's are very common (even though yelling of vulgar words is not common in most Tourette's patients) and most of the time they can feel it coming and kind of hold it back.  To some speaking helps but there really isn't a characteristic presentation.

Many have social anxiety's so speaking to them is perfectly fine and may help as long as you don't make it awkward, which it sounds like you would've.

My wife had a student a long time ago who had it and who's only tick was that he would yell out the letter "L" every once in a while.

Very random.

I had mild tics.  Not even sure how noticeable it was, nobody ever told me.  Then I found out about taurine+magnesium supplements, which takes care of it almost completely.  Its a terrible thing to have, always gave me headaches.  Frustrating cause there's not much information about a cure, didn't think I'd ever find one.  Can't really stop tics when talking, and was worse in social situations.  Maybe recommend taurine+magnesium?

Former Royals legend Jim Eisenreich had Tourette's. Read about him in Sports Illustrated a long time ago and have been fascinated/obsessed with Tourette's ever since.

I had mild tics.

"hey, can you go to the SMOKE store and pick up a gallon of milk?"

"dude, you can't get milk at the cigarette place."

"No, you idiot. It's PATTERSON's grocery store."

"We don't have a Patterson's grocery in this town. You know that."
