Just got back from Burlington, VT, and I can tell you, it needs to be higher on that list. It's a like a New England-y version of Boulder.

It's pretty great.
Pros: Lake Champlain, mountains, ~1.5 hour drive to Montreal, quick flights to LGA/PHL/ORD, etc; college town vibe (University of Vermont), lots of good eats in the "downtown" area. Picturesque.

Cons: they get a lot of snow, even more than nebraska; you have to deal with subarus and those hiking sandal thingies everywhere. 

looks like not many cons.

It is. Fly fishing, skiing, kayaking, hunting, etc. Not that cold in winter (more Spokane than Chicago.) Decent culture because of the University. Grizzly athletics are an interesting diversion, but will never erode my emaw.
