Merlin makes for a good makeshift Pokémon Go for us boring olds, have tracked for a couple of years

this is a great analogy. It can be so random and you'll never know what you may come across. Side note @DQ12: Our guy Warren is a great birder and has bagged several rare birds up in the northern part of the state over the years.

The Kansas birding community has yearly competitions for the highest number of different birds in a year. As I get older, my hope it to try and take a swing at those. Unfortunately you have to be pretty open to travel during migration to catch alot of birds in both sw ks and se ks.

how big is the kansas birder community? because my high school biology teacher is an avid birder and i had mentioned to him one time that i had a cousin who was also into birding and i mentioned his name and his eyes kind of lit up and he was like "oh that's your cousin? he's a rising star in the birder community"

Is Warren back active on some social media?  I haven't heard from him in probably over a decade.  I remember he was an avid birder though.

That's a good question and not sure i would have any idea. If i had to guess, I'd say 10k+ are fairly active. But I bet under 200 are more the hardcore types.
Only 75 people registered for the 2023 Kansas Birding Big Year Competition. Here is the 2024 info
There are several places online people congregate. Kstate still hosts an old ass listserv website where some old school birders still post. Then you have facebook groups(Kansas Birding has 13k members. A rare sighting group has around 1.5k). Then you have some in-person groups like the Audubon society where they have meetings in different areas of the state.

He posts vacation pics on fbook every now and then. That's about it.

My hobby is going to bars and playing trivia.

This is a good time!
Been looking for the best bar in Kansas City that has a competitive trivia night but frankly nothing holds a candle to Mae's Trivia Smackdown...

check out Border Brewing Company on Wednesdays. Apparently there is a Kroozer acolyte there who runs a trivia night Auntie Mae’s style.
