Yo G, it was a pretty major trend around 1989.  (Though I never had overalls myself.)

I looked fantastic in my assortment of Hilfiger carpenter jeans, carpenter jean shorts, and khaki carpenter pants with the hammer loop that looked just like the Hilfiger symbol.
