Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't the first down line extend indefinitely beyond the field, similar to the endzone line? So by diving out of bounds, he still could have converted the first down (and came within a yard of doing so).

The end zone line also doesn't extend indefinitely, does it?  I mean, why else would anyone ever have to sneak one inside the pylon?

No, it doesn't.  I know it used to in the NFL, but they changed it as what I know it as the "Michael Vick Rule."  He would dive really far out of bounds (so the defenders couldn't get to him) and just kick the pylon with his toe.
