I actually do like the idea of doubling NDSU guy’s salary and making him a DC to see what he’s got. Only issue is what HC candidate would be on board with that? Sean?

It would take some humility, but if Norvell is honest he needs a legit DC

How did those ASU offenses rank in the Pac12? Also how do the recruiting rankings compare?

7th, 2nd, 5th, and 6th respectively.

Brown's classes in recruiting: 93, 100+, 97, 100+

Norvell's classes: 4th best non P5, 15th best non P5, and currently 3rd best non P5.
Well the recruiting is encouraging at least. Still not super excited

Good info... Norvell plus a defensive staff that includes Seiler, Kleinman and Norwood could be very interesting (though unlikely).

I like norvell better than brown. Change my mind

norvell is unqualified. shouldn't even be getting consideration honestly.
Norvell followed Todd Graham around as an assistant, and people seem to really hate Todd Graham. Hasn't done anything especially impressive. He's the most boring yet expensive hire we could make if we're pulling from the pool of lower level HC dorks

I do not like Graham, but I like Norvell.

I get that he took over a good program from Fuentes and has sustained it.

Also, his recruiting rankings for the last 3 years: 64/56, 81/81, 53/56.

I will say, his defense was awful last year and the reason they didn't match the previous season. He would need to address the DC for sure.

Good post

From Matt Hall at KSO:

Quote
If you're terrified of Klieman, you've been heard. That doesn't mean he won't end up with the job, but ADGT knows how you feel about him.

He's doing a great job covering this.  I give him my money,  you probably should too. :dunno:

I posted this elsewhere, but I think Moorehead at Mississippi St is a good example for Kleinman.  Moorehead realized that the FCS to P5 jump was not going to happen.  So, he left a successful head coaching career to be an OC at Penn State.  If Taylor thinks that Kleinman is great, and Kleinman wants to be a P5 head coach, then let’s make Kleinman our Co-DC (he makes $300,000 now) and see what happens... it could work out well for both parties.

I agree that recruiting is an issue but I noticed last year Troy signed around  6 players with at least one P5 offer (depending on which sight you use Ruvals, 247 or ESPN)... we signed around 12 with at least one other P5 offer and several were battles with KU, Illinois and / or Rutgers.  Having worked at Kentucky and Tech Inam sure he knows what type of athlete it takes to win and how to turn over the rocks that others are passing on.

At this point I think the probability of getting Venables or a current P5 coach are about 0%.  This guy seems to have a decent resume and with a handful of good assistants could be solid.

If Taylor thinks Kleinman is so great, and I see he is only making $300,000 per year, I am sure we could double his salary make him Co-DC and see what happens.  I think the reality for Kleinman is that after the Bohl experience few schools with a quality program are going to jump at Kleiman unless he gains P5 experience.  Joe Moorhead at Mississippi State realized this and went from FCS head coach to OC at Penn State which eventually landed him a P5 coaching job.

I haven’t heard any rumors about interest in Leavitt. And Blackcats has confirmed 3 different times that NSDU guy is not happening.

Thanks.  I believe I saw here or elsewhere that Taylor met with Leavitt a long time ago, but apparently had moved on.  I am not sure if Leavitt comes back into play.

Truthfully, I can't see a massive difference between Mike Norvell, Neal Brown and Seth LittreLL.  However, I think perception is everything... KSU fans seemed to rally behind LittreLL after Venables said 'no' and now we all have egg in our face.  Even if we landed Norvell or Brown it seems like it will be hard to regain the positive perception.

I can't keep up with the news, banter, etc.  Do I have this recap correct:

Venables:  We offered him a crap ton of money (per blackcats) and he said no.

LittreLL:  After our dream boat rejected us, we moved on to LittreLL and basically had everything wrapped up and he decided to throw us under the bus at the last minute (per PETE), waste several weeks of our coaching search and make comments about being happy at UNT who he will dump for someone else probably soon -- Classic Sooner FWIW

After those two public messes, we are now down to the following options:
1) Praying that Venables has a change of heart - Odds of about 0.5%
2) Considering the Memphis coach Norvell - Odds of about 14.5%
3) Considering Leavitt and Kleinman - Odds of about 75%
4) Panicking with backup plans of Wolford, Sean and who knows what - Odds of about 10%

Rumblings another scoop is coming shortly for a hot name SL is bringing on staff....

I have been wondering if Eric Morris would consider becoming LittreLL’s OC?  LittreLL coached at Tech when he was a player, and though Morris just started at Incarnate Word I would think we could pay better.

I still think bv wants to go straight to a better job like Auburn or something

I don’t really believe that. Maybe actual coaches have a different perspective, but if you take like a top 10 job as a new coach your leash will be extremely short. If you can’t have reasonable success at a place like KSU after a few years, you weren’t gonna last more than 3 at the highest profile jobs. So why try skipping straight there?

Likewise, KSU will most likely have a longer prior of grace than a random SEC school.

His son could transfer, so I think that argument is kinda silly.

I don’t see him as being scared either so I’m convinced he’s just not ambitious enough to want a HC job at this point. As someone with very little career ambition I could totally understand him wanting to focus on what he loves doing instead of all the administrative headaches that come with being a HC.

Yes, his son could lose a year of eligibility and transfer to a team that is a long ways for competing for a national or even conference championship.  Only his son could say if that is a good choice.

If he says no, my sense is that you are right that he looks at the job and says “this isn’t what I want for myself / my family.”  Personally, I commend those people as opposed to calling them stupid, scared, etc.

I think you misread that.

Yeah, I didn’t mean to sound like the poster was calling him scared, stupid, etc.  I was referring to a small minority of others.

He’s either

A) Stupid
B) Scared
C) Hates this place so much no amount of money can change how he feels

D) Thinks that his current situation is better for him and his family.

Damn. That's a lot of money to reject.

turning down that kind of money tells me venables is too stupid to be our head coach anyway

Agreed. Also a major FP

Perhaps he has other priorities, especially now that his son is on the Clemson team... I can’t blame him.  I hope something wild happens and he reversed course, but if LittreLL is named the next coach I will be pretty excited.  I hope we give him a ton of support and money for staff.

That game literally put me to sleep.

The game also only had 35,000 attendees... not good.  It will be interesting to see the Neilson Ratings of the conference championships.  Texas-OU is our best lineup so hopefully our ratings are in the ballpark or better than the other P5 championships.

Looking more and more like Bill is going to force Gene to fire him. Ugh...

Here is my uninformed guess, Taylor told Bill that on this upcoming Monday they are going to announce the next head coach and that it would be preferable if that announcement was preceded by his retirement.  Bill called Meyers and Meyers backed Taylor, Bill may have then tried to talk to some donors or board of regents but found no support.  Now he is just waiting it out to the last minute in case the coach negotiations fall through and he can somehow slip into being the coach again for next year.

Meanwhile it sounds like Taylor has been plotting this for awhile and after an honest run at BV he settled on LittreLL who is a big 12 guy, successful head coach and a strong recruiting network.  Providing that LittreLL can get good assistants, this seems like Taylor did a really good job navigating a tough issue for KSU.  I hope it all comes together ASAP.

Klein is staying along with a couple of others.

That would be a fan winner... Seiler, Norwood and Hickson also seem like assistants that could be easy-keepers

that irl is going to happen kearneymen

Minus the Beaty part obvs

Yeah, that was an exacerbation on my part to point to the need for a former head coach / really strong staff.

11/30/1988

11/30/2018

30 years to this date.

Therefore, we should also announce LittreLL tomorrow for goodwill purposes.

Frankly, I hope he is here by Saturday recruiting and making staff decisions... I could see some combo of Seiler, Norwood, Klein and Hickson staying on.  I also hope we give him enough money to hire a former P5 head coach as a coordinator to give him someone to lean on.  Heck, I would take Beaty as an OC / TE coach.

So my favorite rumor of the day, and I emphasize that this is just a rumor, is that LHC LHC Bill Snyder met with his oncologist today and his preferred replacement not named Sean Snyder.  Apparently Bill’s second choice (behind Sean) has been asked and said no, so Bill applied personal and direct pressure.

Also a part of that rumor is, he met with his Dr. to get a clean bill of health because he hasn’t completely made up his mind if he’s leaving or not.

hmmm.  He has it pretty good where he's at.

I have always assumed that Bill’s preference after Sean was Leavitt.

Brent will just get promoted at Clemson when Saban retires and Dabo goes to 'Bama. Gets to stay at a championship level school and doesn't have to deal with our awful fanbase.

This is what I believe as well

I lived in South Carolina for a few years, they love BV but their Co-offensive coordinators are former Clemson players that have been with Dabo longer than BV.  They don’t have his experience, but they are in some ways they are Clemson’s version of BV.  I don’t know who they would hire.

I will freak out if he goes to Texas Tech.

If Venables goes to TTech, the majority of the fan base will immediately be against Taylor and whoever is our coach (Snyder or otherwise).  That is a no-win situation for KSU.

Meh if he doesn't leave quick just keep him and we'll end up with basically the same batch of mediocre candidates we'd fight for this year.
If the choice was keep Bill or hire some no-name dope, I'd rather keep Bill.

BV is the only non-no-name dope we'd choose from imo. And he's not a "sure thing".

I don't need a sure-thing, just a not a no-name dope who's never accomplished anything.

I personally consider the UNT guy a dope.  I mean he's never beaten a single great team or even good team yet.

Agreed. Did the UNT guy recruit the players that he's been "winning" with?

I watched parts of a few UNT games out of curiosity and to answer your question “yes” most of the skill position players were juniors and sophomores (his recruits), I don’t know about the lineman.

Of the smaller college coaches it seems like LittreLL and Norvell are thought to be the top tier and then a muddy second tier of Fickell (Cincinnati), Clark (UAB), Collins (Temple), Wells (Utah State) and Monken (Army) are randomly thrown together in varying order...  I agree with several on here that you throw everything possible at Venables.  If he says “no” keep asking and offering.

It'll be that dude from North Dakota.

This is what I am afraid of... I am sure Klieman is a good coach, but with only one year of FBS coaching experience, 1997 DB coach at KU, how can he be expected to recruit and coach at the P5 level?  Everyone thought that Bohl was brilliant and he has struggled to win at Wyoming.

Kansas State Football / Re: the "following a legend" issue

I think it would be impossible to follow Snyder if he retired after 2012 or 2014.  I really don't see it as much of an issue now.

I agree, unlike previous years, or when Snyder retired last time, many people are calling for a change and some negative and frankly ugly press has surfaced as a result.  It will never be easy to follow Snyder, but if Taylor gets a good name that engages KSU fans I doubt it will be an issue early on.  After a few years winning will be the judge.

As for Prince, it is still baffling that Wefald, who did a lot of good for KSU, thought that an average offensive coordinator with three years of coordinating experience could replace Snyder or enjoy fan support.  Heck, Virginia wasn’t even good when Prince coached there (21-19 in ACC play during Prince years and 12-12 when Prince was an offensive coordinator).

I think Taylor will be much smarter and get someone with proven head coach or coordinator experience.  Early on people packed the stadium for Prince and they will do it again for a new coach... they just need to relate early and win and fans will follow.
