Kansas State Football / Re: Football Recruiting Thread
« on: March 05, 2018, 06:36:54 AM »
I like that he has two years to play.  Dishon is an obvious lock and hopefully Davies will take the jump from role player to starter in his second year in the program (he too will be a junior).  Wiley got minimal game action and Huggins red-shirted (I think).  So, Mittie and our juco Moore will have a good shot to break into the rotation this season and possibly start this year or next.

Kansas State Football / O Line Question
« on: February 05, 2018, 09:37:23 PM »
I saw on the Rivals site that KSU received a commitment from an Juco OL that will be a sophomore next year.  The article went on to say that KSU will not have a sophomore OL returning next year because several plays left (the article implied some level of attrition).  The article also mentioned that 'what was once a strength has become a bit of a concern.' Who left?

Tom Killilea --> red shirt freshman, would have been a Soph
Dylan Couch --> red shirt freshman, would have been a Soph

Ben Adler --> red shirting I thought so he will be a R. Fresh
Harrison Creed --> red shirting I thought so he will be a R. Fresh
Bill Kuduk --> red shirting I thought so he will be a R. Fresh
Josh Rivas --> red shirting I thought so he will be a R. Fresh

I am sure I am missing someone.

When was the last time we had this young of a staff? mid to late 90's?

In Snyder’s return year (2009) Dimel was 47 and Vic Koenning was 49... not a huge age difference.

In Prince’s first year (2006) Morris was 30 and Franklin was 32

I understand the concern and the somewhat poor position that KSU is in.  However for the scenario that KU goes to big 10, Texas / OU to the PAC or SEC and the B12 folds to play out there has to be a number of things lineup before the GOR runs out in 2024-25.

1) Texas and OU have to be able to make more money than their current B12 pay from Tier 1 & 2 as well as their own Tier 3 networks.  For OU the SEC could probably make that happen.  For Texas, and the LHN, the current SEC and P12 Networks would need to up their pay to make it work.  I don't see how the PAC12 could offer them more money... I could be wrong.

2) Texas politics would have to allow the change... we have seen this before with Richards and Baylor, the blowup over TAM/ Texas split, the pending B12 and Texas split and recently the B12 and Houston.  For Texas to leave Tech, Baylor and TCU out in the cold it will take some massive political work.

3) If I remember correctly, Kansas and Oklahoma both have one board of educators to govern their schools.  Therefore, for KU and OU to split off and leave KSU and OSU the boards would have to approve that... not to mention potential political action.  That seems like a big step.  Missouri and Nebraska did not have this say problem because they are the only FBS football schools in the state.

4) This is minor, but I think the move to a Power Four is somewhat contingent on the four team playoff (in football) format.  Between now and 2024, this could change - especially with the all SEC finals.  Obviously TV dollars are going to dictate a lot of everything, but we'll see what happens.

5) Finally, as the article posted above points out I think we are finding that eyeballs in a state, television viewership and success of a network aren't allows correlated.  Did adding Rutgers do much for the B10?  What about the PAC12 network, they have tons of eyeballs but millions more cord-cutters and some very empty football stadiums.  I have no idea what streaming will do, but again there are a lot of balls in the air here.

As always, KSU can only worry about what they can control: keep winning, keep building facilities, keep building the brand, keep filling stadiums, etc.  Demographics will be hard to overcome, but KSU can do a lot to help itself in the next several years.

So much for chuck 3rd and Long

lol, yeah that was solid rumor that got the blood boiling... at point Chuck Long was the new OC and Sean Snyder was the new DC.  Instead, Snyder promotes two of his top young(er) assistants and hires Hickson, Hanson and a TBD DB coach.  Funny how the narrative is much different, especially if the new DB coach turns out to be a young(er) former KSU player.

Rivals and Scout is confirmed that Seiler is the new DC.  Good for him!  He, like Coleman, worked his way up the ranks and cut his teeth on the recruiting trail.  I glad for both of them.

I also hope that the new DB coach is also a stud recruiter.  Seiler and Coleman seemed like two of our best recruiters, moving them to coordinators will surely reduce their time on the recruiting trail.

Kansas State Football / New Coleman as OC Thread
« on: January 30, 2018, 06:46:05 AM »
I thought I would start a new thread to discuss Coleman as the Cat's new OC.  I am super excited for him.  Does any one know what changes he may or may not be included to make?  I looked back at his KSU playing days and we were pretty run heavy until the 1993 season and Chad May chucked it around a little more (ran the ball 54% and threw the ball 46% of the time in 1993).  In the NFL Coleman played under Bobby Ross and Bill Cowher and his OC was Ralph Friedgen in SD... I don't think you can gather much from that.

Any thoughts?  I love how fired up he gets on the sideline, I hope that translates to a team with more urgency on offense. At times it felt like we lulled ourselves to sleep and just went through the motions of calling the same plays we normally called.

Pretty sure it was locketts recruitment. Gordon is his godfather or something.

Hmmm, that's an odd situation, thanks for posting.  I wonder too much of that was Currie's influence as well.  Oh well, we will see what happens.

To the above poster, Jim Leonhard is a good example of NFL player to DC (only one year in between as a position coach).  He also has a similar background to Newman... he his from Wisconsin, played at Wisconsin, had a significant NFL career and then returned to coach at Wisconsin.  We'd be blessed if Newman did the same thing!  After 15 years in the NFL I would imagine that he knows how to coach DBs.

I seem to recall Joe Gordon's previous departure being a little acrimonious, he had a beef about something. Am I making this up?
Official statement had something to do with improper texting or calling recruits or some crap like that if I recall.   Could be wrong though.

I have no clue, but in goEMAW's first post http://goEMAW.com/forum/index.php?topic=21719.0 of Gordon leaving there didn't seem to be any indication of wrong doing nor was there any in the Wichita Eagle report http://www.kansas.com/news/local/news-columns-blogs/article1095654.html

Apparently it wasn't something super serious as he has landed jobs at other colleges / high schools (whom I assume all do background checks).

Eckler is actually the LBs coach at North Carolina, hopefully he's the guy.

I didn't know that, thanks for the update.  Eckler has been everywhere: UNC, North Texas, USC, Indiana, UNL, LSU and OU.  Lots of experience, but none as a DB coach.  I don't know how important that is.

If Seiler is the new DC (which I am fine with) I hope that Joe Gordon gets a serious look.  I think he could bring a good recruiting footprint (Texas ties) and he has experience as a DB coach.  He also had wild amounts of sideline energy which I always appreciated.

Interesting.  Thank you Hayes for your services... I really hated that style of defense, but it was effective (mostly) and I appreciate what Hayes brought to the table in experience and truthfully some good DBs over the years.

I agree with the poster above that the only way someone like BV, Leavitt or Stoops come on board is with a HCIW title and it seems like it is Sean or nothing for Bill.  So, that's probably not an option.  I agree that Seiler is probably in line to be the next DC and good for him!  He seems like a very engaged coach and (like Coleman) has been a stud on the recruiting trail. A few other names:

Very Long Shots and would only come as a DC
- Raheem Morris:  He was KSU's DC / DB coach under Ron Prince and has been an NFL head coach and current Falcons WR coach.  This probably would be a demotion in some ways, but may also re-start his career in some ways.
- Bret Bielema: He is making millions doing nothing, so I doubt he comes .
- Mike Ekler: He has coached LB's all over the place and could probably coach DBs(?)  He is currently the DC at North Texas.
- Newman... his playing days may be coming to an end.  If I were him I enjoy the fruits of an awesome NFL career, but maybe all he wants to do is coach football?

Another random name:
- Joe Gordon: After being a director of recruiting for KSU he has coached at some lower level schools and is currently a HS head coach in Arlington.

Excited for Coleman!  He seems like he has really worked his butt off since showing up on campus.  His recruiting efforts have really paid huge dividends for K-State and the WR's and returners have been mostly solid.

I hope he dominates as our new O-Coordinator.  The offensive unit should be pretty solid.

our 3 game winning skid does not make the season
sorry but I refuse to accept the idea that this team is good.  we’ve been playing well over the past 7 days, yes.  we’ve also been shooting lights out.  how does this team find ways to win when the shots inevitably aren’t falling?

3 games over the next 12 days should provide them time to cool off

Man if we went 3-1 over the next 4 it would be on like donkey kong.  4-0 and I'll cream my panties.

4-0 over the next four games would put us squarely in the running for the conference... we would still need a lot of help, but it would be an impressive run.  One win at a time, really love the brand of basketball that Brown, Wade, Sneed and Diarra have adopted.  They have really secured the ball and struck a good balance between driving to the rack and hitting the three / jumper.  The ball really seems to be moving well and when we dribble it is right towards the rim with the goal of scoring.

Jerome Tang Coaches Kansas State Basketball / Nigel Shadd Question
« on: January 23, 2018, 06:48:08 AM »
Does anyone know what's up with Nigel Shadd?  He seemed to be getting some minutes early in the season but has not played since the TTech game (Jan 6th) and before that the SE MO game on Dec 16th.  Is he hurt or in the dog house?  I would think that his length could help for a few minutes a game?  I am really glad to see that James Love is able to play again, but goodness he's racked up 6 fouls in 11 minutes of play to go along with 1 point, 0 boards, 0 blocks and 0 assists.

I hope it is true!  Coleman has been a great hire and killed it on the recruiting trail.  The WRs had a bit of the case the drops this year, but overall have been solid and generally play a good all around game.  Our return game has been excellent as well (I believe that Coleman coaches the returners).

Grayshirt offer

I like grayshirt offers for DTs, especially when they are from 'smaller' schools.  Snyder and Mo have a killer eye for DT talent and getting the extra semester to get acclimated / bigger is huge.

170
Oh man, oh terrible.  Definitely prayers for the Snyder family.

171
I have to admit that I think we have reached that point.  What do we have to offer.  We have 3 healthy good player, one crippled guy, a bench full of knotheads, and no scholarship for a new coach to recruit  with.  I think it is conceivable that Brown and/or Wade transfer.  If Oscar gets canned, do it now.  We would have a hell of a Missouri Valley team, but Big 12 naw.  What frustrates me is other pud programs like TCU, Texas Red Ticks, and OSU are moving up and forward.  But not us.  Hell no, we have bonehead administration that want bland white barf for basketball and football.  They really don't give a rat's ass about grunt fan.

This is the hard part... TCU, TTech and maybe OSU (Brad Underwood leaving sucked for them, so we'll see long term with the new coach) really invested in their programs have begun to creep over KSU.  The top schools seem to be pretty solid each year, with OU's flop last year as an exception, and I don't see KSU gaining any ground against them.

I still think KSU can land a good coach (TCU, TTech and OSU (with Underwood) did).  We have great facilities, great history and an 'ok' recent history.  Provided the 'Core-Four' stay we could be an attractive place for a good coach.  Perhaps Steve Henson will really turn it on at UTSA, he has already made good strides, this year and become a good candidate as well... maybe he could lure in Mitch Richmond to be the assistant head coach?

172
Fellers the horse ain't dead yet.  It won't win a thoroughbred race, but we can still do some plowing. We can still be Champions of the Bottom Half.  That should be good enough for the tournament.  Texqs, Cyclones, TCU, OkieDoakies, and KSU will fight for this coveted title.  Our chances get diminished though if Kam is hurt

In general I agree, there is no point in checking in now.  I like oscar as a person and he seems to have brought quality individuals (assistant coaches and players) to the program that should make us proud to cheer for.  I will be cheering for KSU to win every game and have on and off the court success.

That said, I can't see how KSU gets to .500 in this conference.  It could happen, but to get here KSU will need to be beat good teams.  That may sound stupid, but at the moment KSU's three best wins are Vandy, WaSU and ISU who are a combined 23-21 (1-8 in conference).  If you look at their record against P5 schools, our best wins are 2-14.  It is more impressive that KSU won these games on the road, but it is hard to envision that KSU is a .500 team in the B12.

Question: How come every time I type 'Bruuce' (without the double u) it is changed to 'oscar' in my post?  I have tried to go back and edit it but the same thing happens...

173
we'll beat ISU again, win 3 against Texas/Baylor/OSU, win 1 or 2 against the big 5. So we'll be 7-11'ish. Classic oscar year.

To your point, when Huggs / Frank came on board my thought was that KSU had to consistently be better than OSU, ISU and Tech to stay out of the cellar of the B12 (realizing that Tom and Wolly had us in the cellar).  Including tournament games, Frank managed to go 16-7 (70%) against these three teams.  When oscar was hired and we added crummy TCU to the conference and started playing everyone twice, I thought that this would be a great deal for KSU... oscar started out well going 12-5 in the first two years, but now into year six we've fallen to 25-20.  The traditional bottom has surpassed us and I don't see WVU, KU, and OU don't seem to be slowing down...

How can we be over .500 against these teams but they've passed us? That math doesn't work.

My guess is that all of the numbers mean that we are 13-15 against those teams since the first two years.

Yep, falling behind slowly.

174
kearneyman, you have low expectations and our dude oscar is not meeting them. sucks for us for sure.

No, my expectations are to be above .500 in the conference, win at least one B12 tournament game and win at least 1 NCAA tournament game a year as a minimum... I am point out that when Huggs / Frank came KSU was in the cellar and we crawled out of that only to return the last several seasons as the cellar has improved and we have not.
