Mike, wasn't there a stretch where these games were being played on campus around 2006-2009?

There were a couple games played at CU around that time.  I think the last one in Fort Collins was 1997 or 98.

Ouch  :frown:

Ouch is right.  You should be here on Monday after a game when CU loses to CSU.  I work in Boulder, so that's always fun.

also, it must not be making that much money, as it is moving back to campuses in 2023/24

Both schools will not make as much money by moving back to campus, but it creates less headache for both schools.  CSU is ok with continuing in Denver, but CU is not (unless it's CSU's home game).  CSU is fine with this agreement since we have our new stadium.

You are bad at math. You play in a 41,000 seat.stadium. To make less than the $2 million you said CSU gets, the average ticket price would only be $45 and you would make exactly zero dollars on concessions and parking.

There's also TV $ that comes into play.  I think the city of Denver kicks in some money too.  I'm not figuring the numbers.  I'm just posting what I've seen/heard in the news.

Nice beatdown on the Beavers.  I think that would be enough to get your game against the Buffs on TV.  Do they take State seriously as a rival?

Yes, their players do, but their fans don't.

If we're taking Mike from Ft. Collins seriously, like the two Kansas P5 teams playing their neutral site game in Missouri ( :bigtoke: ), we'd be looking at attendance potential of 78,000.  Since like 60,000 of those seats would be sold to K-State fans, and the ticket sales are split evenly between the teams, we'd be giving KU a ton of money.  Ain't gonna happen.

Playing in Mile High is a big deal to the 18-20 year old players who get to use the same locker rooms as the NFL teams and play on an NFL field (the same one John Elway, Peyton Manning, Tom Brady, etc) played on.  Fans who have to drive further and/or get worse seats don't particularly like it.

I think CU gets 55% of the tickets (west side) and CSU gets 45% of the tickets (east side).  Each school disperses them however they choose.

I'm not advocating KU and KSU move to KC.  I'm just curious if they ever played there, and if not, then why?  Even once every 3 years in a 6 year cycle (so twice total) would be an interesting experiment.

Both CU and CSU each make $1-1.5 million for each game played in Denver.  It also gives each school an extra home game every season.

That seems like a crazy low amount of money for the biggest game of the year. For instance take any given K-State game, if we have an average ticket price of $60, it's much bigger btw, we are making over $3 million in ticket sales alone. That doesn't count parking or concessions. It also doesn't count the millions spent locally. For schools like Colorado and CSU it makes no sense to play that game on a neutral field.

Also it doesn't give each school another home game, that's not how it works bro.
I'll clarify how it works in the Rocky Mountain Showdown:  Both schools include the RMS in their respective season tickets package, so technically, you are correct that it's not another home game.

Wait a minute, everyone else shut up.

Are you telling us that this game on Friday will have season ticket holders from both Colorado and Colorado State receiving tickets for this game?

Colorado's season tickets include the option for the game in Denver or you can trade it out for another home game.  :runaway: :surprised:

This is correct.  Enough season ticket holders for CU complained about it that they instituted this last year, I think.

The only reason to play a game at AH is for KC fans to have a short drive.  And beers at the game

Pretty lame that you have to be "in the club" to get beer at a football game.

I agree with that, but I don't think byu will ever give in on that issue. Maybe the conference will.

The conference can't, they would if they could but the geographic foot print of the conference would make it impossible to eliminate a weekend day to play games. It's an issue for the Olympic sports only but of course they are the ones that have problems with travel already.

The conference would flex if they could, I think BYU is one of the schools in college athletics that could bring measurable revenue to a conference. Scott's Pac 12 theory is interesting because it would be much easier for them to accommodate BYU, but it's worth noting they had a chance and opted for Utah instead.

Sunday play obviously super important to them getting into the Big XII, with that aside, how much does some of this (especially in the PAC 12 case) simply have to do with not wanting THAT kind of jesus-y team in the conference?

If Sunday play is mostly an issue with the olympic sports, then why not invite them for football only?

Better for local Manhattan economy and A.D.'s office revenue wise to keep it in Manhattan.  Also, a large portion of KSU fans come from far west, and would not make the trip.

"Better for local Manhattan economy"  Yes, I agree.

"A.D.'s office revenue wise to keep it in Manhattan" Not sure I agree.  CU and CSU each make 1-1.5 million per game when played in Denver.

"Also, a large portion of KSU fans come from far west, and would not make the trip."  This is a good reason.  Don't want to piss off your season ticket holders.

Local restaurants, bars, and hotels make more than that, I would imagine

I agree that the local economy probably benefits more than that, but I was only talking about net profit for the athletic departments.

Is that on tv?

If you have DirecTV (like me), then no.  Here's a link to the wiki page which lists where the Pac-12 Network is available.

Colorado State's games are never on actual TV networks, are they?

Once in a blue moon (hey that happened this year, didn't it?).  Maybe we'll get lucky and they'll move the game vs Boise in late November to CBS if it's a meaningful game.  CBS owns the TV contract and they put most of the games on CBS Sports TV.  I think ESPN gets to pick after CBS is done.

Rams and buffs buttin' heads sounds great, is this game on television?

CU is the "home" team so they own the TV rights.  It's on the Pac-12 Network.

Congrats. Still doesn't change the fact that there was thousands of empty seats and unsold tickets

What empty seats?

I don't know about unsold seats but there were definitely a lot of empties, it was noticeable on tv. Mike the first picture you posted has blocks of empty seats right in the middle of the section behind the closed in end zone. I believe that's the student section, you guys give way too many student tickets but I'm guessing that's because that many can't be sold on a regular basis. I'm sure school hasn't started yet there but that shouldn't be an excuse.

I'm not seeing empty seats behind the endzone in the pic I posted.  That section was full halfway through the 1st quarter until halftime.  They are the last of the student seats to get filled because they're the worst.

All students pay an athletics fee and in return get "free" tickets to any of the sports (including football and men's and women's basketball).  Students have to reserve tickets online using their student account.  They were all claimed for this game some time last week (first week of school).  I'm pretty sure it is 10k tickets for the students, but someone on the Ram board said it's 11k, so I'm not 100% sure of the quantity.

Personally, in a perfect world, we'd get the two AZ schools, the Pac-12 would up and take Colorado State and BYU, and then we would have an 8 team playoff.

I like a 12 team conference, and I'd love to have Arizona and Arizona State.  And BYU and Colorado State would give some natural rivals to CU and Utah.

I also think that the Big 12 and Pac 12 should pool their Tier 1 and Tier 2 media rights and create a lot of cross conference match-ups.

But, hey, what do I know?
There is a better chance Nebraska and Missouri come back than the Pac-12 adding BYU

I don't agree. There's literally one issue keeping BYU out of the Big 12.

Which is?
