I don't want to fly under the radar. I want to be rated as high as possible.

This team is experienced enough that a high ranking won't faze them.  Ertz, Reed, Risner, etc. will be strong leadership from preventing that.

The higher the ranking the better.

The New Joe Montgomery Birther Pit / Re: 610 Sports Drops KU
« on: July 26, 2017, 10:21:34 AM »
Several years ago, I remember Keitzman went on a rant after a caller wanted them to talk more KU, KSU, Mizzou and less Royals, and this was when the Royals were pretty bad/below average.  Keitz said that regardless of how bad the Royals were, their ratings dwarfed any college team they put on the radio.  Same with the Chiefs.

I would imagine that is exponentially more truthful now than it was then.  I'm not surprised they pushed back on KU.

I could see 810 scooping them up, but I think that will be difficult to manage on their part.  IMG and Learfield are going to have expectations that won't be met by sharing airtime on the same station, so there may be a situation where someone gets pushed to a sister station.  Isn't their sister station something like Hot Talk 1510 or something like that?

I enjoy the morning show. I actually run around the same group of friends as Jake, so I don't mind him. He's the producer, so he kinda gets to do what he wants.

I mean, it's a really good sports station. It's made such an impact that it has it's own restaurants surviving (other than the plaza) around the KC area. It's depleted 610 too. If it wasn't for the Roayls and 98.9 the rock revenue keeping 610 afloat, they would have closed up shop years ago.

Steven St. John is pretty entertaining.  But overall, the morning show is pretty boring.  All of it is extremely repetitive.  I stopped listening to sports radio about two or three years ago because there's nothing new or insightful.  I get more enjoyment out of listening to various non-sports related podcasts.

I think what MIR may be saying (sorry if I'm putting words in your mouth) is that 810 will broadcast the games, but a lot of the other content that our other partner stations provide, they don't.

I don't get any of the pregame stuff, and I can't really recall if they do much post game.  I usually have to web stream most of the content.

And to be clear, I'm not talking about the stuff 101.5 does that is proprietary to them.  I'm talking about the hour before and hour after the game.

That offensive line is simply going to abuse people this year.  I haven't been in the loop enough to know who is going to step into that RG spot, but my hope is that whoever it is, they develop a combo block with Risner like we saw this last year.  That was a thing of beauty.

Between sending Barnes, Silmon, and McCoy through the line and bruising linebackers and safeties, and Ertz being a threat on the zone read and option, this team was going to be formidable in the running game even before you factor in the really, really talented receivers.

If the defense is even serviceable, I think the floor for this team is ten wins.  I really believe that.  I'm just floored at the amount of offensive talent this team has.  I think there are at least five potential draft picks on the offensive side (Barnes, Dimel, Pringle, Risner, Frantz).  Hell, I think Dayton Valentine could get drafted in the late rounds if he has a decent pro day.  And I'm not even considering guys we haven't seen yet like McCoy and Strickland.

31
This puts a massive damper on my high hopes for 2018

Skylar is good, man.

This will be a distraction for the team, and will not be good.

For the record, we are all human beings, we all have a sexuality. Some express that sexuality in a heterosexual manner, some in a homosexual manner, and others either can't make up their mind or bounce back-and-forth during their lives. It is what it is.

That obvious point being established, his doing this gives the ESPN-SJW's of the media world a reason to pay attention to Kansas State, and not in a good way. Now, we're going to be flooded with a focus all season long on all the ESPN/SJW-perceived social inequalities that need to be "corrected" in "backwards-Manhattan Kansas" as they see it.

I hope I'm wrong, for Snyder and this teams' sake, but MU and Columbia's problems all started when Sam came-out.

Disagree.  Strongly.

What I've read is that this break from the Larsen C shelf has not been linked to warming as of yet.  The retreat of Larsen A and B has been.

If you think the world is going to end from agw in your lifetime, you are a fucktard.

No one thinks that.

my favorite part was where he was super open and transparent and released the emails right before the NYT released the emails.

The narrative of, "Why would he do this?" is hilarious.

I mean if you ignore the fact that he's kind of an idiot who lived a life of billionaire white privilege, and you discount how that shapes his decision making, then alright, I'll act surprised, too.

There was a Linksys EA9300 Tri-Band on sale today for Prime Day.  I missed that sale b/c they sold out, but Best Buy was offering the same price, so I scooped it and will pick it up on the way home.

Pretty stoked.  Looks like a really nice device.  Great feedback in some customer reviews, and the Max Stream routers can be paired with Max Stream extenders for seamless wifi if I still need help upstairs.

Kansas State Football / Re: KU football is hurting

I really didn't think we'd ever get this nice stuff back in the day. I remember being jealous of Nebraska because they had a fountain or some water feature in their facility. That was before I went to NU's memorial in person and saw the dump it actually is.

Anyway, we've come so far. I'll be interested to see what happens w/ the South side concourse and hopefully some facade on the east side. It will be pretty spectacular small-ish stadium at that point.

Circling back to KU...

I think given the real estate they're dealing with, I think they could demolish Memorial and build a pretty nice 40k seat stadium for $300 million. Kind of like Wallace Wade down at Duke.

KU football is always going to be a boutique ticket.  If they have a good spurt here and there, they may hit 50k fans in the stands, but their target needs to be some sort of fan experience where you just want to be there, even if they aren't very good.

Kansas State Football / Re: Bowl Projections
« on: July 10, 2017, 02:24:59 PM »
I think gE has said for years that bowl games are meaningless.

Always ahead of the curve. I think what's interesting with the current situation is that the players are increasingly feeling this way too.

I've wondered this myself, especially since the playoff became a thing. Mid- and lower-tier bowl games don't seem like much more than a money grab for sponsors these days, kinda like all these one-off postseason basketball tournaments (CBI, Vegas 16, etc.). We've already run into the problem of having more bowl games than teams with 6+ wins, so they have to let in teams with losing records. I can only imagine that will just get worse.

There will always be at least a couple "benefits" to playing in lesser bowl games - extra practices for underclassmen, one more chance for non pro-bound seniors to put on their pads, an occasional intriguing matchup (still hoping for the chance to crush Nebraska's dreams on a neutral field) - but with terrible (if any) payouts and little more than bragging rights on the line, they've definitely lost their luster.

A lot of people take time off around the holidays, and it's fun having football on all of the time.  And 95% of them are games where teams with winning records play each other, so there's some pretty good quality football being played.

I like bowls.  They're fun, and they don't really hurt anyone.

that article leads me to believe if the entire planet cut off 100% of fossil fuels tomorrow cold turkey, we'd still be F'd

This is the biggest thing...

Quote
What follows is not a series of predictions of what will happen — that will be determined in large part by the much-less-certain science of human response. Instead, it is a portrait of our best understanding of where the planet is heading absent aggressive action. It is unlikely that all of these warming scenarios will be fully realized, largely because the devastation along the way will shake our complacency. But those scenarios, and not the present climate, are the baseline. In fact, they are our schedule.

There have been some good signs lately in terms of action.  The G20, minus us, reaffirmed their commitment to Paris, and most signs point to market forces and state/local action helping us meet (and possibly exceed) our targets.  Morgan Stanley just did research and found that by 2020, renewables will be the cheapest form of energy there is.* Tesla is providing a new battery in South Australia that may help provide much better storage for renewables.  Volvo made the decision to go all electric/hybrid, Tesla released the Model 3, and some estmates are that at least 1/3 of all cars on the road will be fully electric by 2040.

It's not enough, right now, but there's positive momentum. I've read some other analysts who say we're underestimating how fast solar is going to grow.  So, I'm hopeful.

A 2 degree rise is likely to happen.  There isn't much that can stop that unless we find ways to extract carbon.  If you believe like a lot of futurists do (i.e. Kurzwell, Burke), we'll be hitting that technological singularity in the middle of the 21st century, and nanotech can help us reverse some of the negative effects of climate change.  While NASA, SpaceX, and others continue to work on a Mars colony, what we learn from trying to terraform Mars can be used here on some scale.  A lot of these things all come to a head between 2040-2050 by most estimates, which is when some MIT research from earlier this year says we need to be well on the road to zero carbon.

Also, the amount of carbon is a sliding scale if we're able to reduce methane, etc.

I think what the NY Mag put out there serves a purpose, and that's to try and spur some action, but I think we'll ultimately be alright on some level.  There's no time to procrastinate, but I don't think most are. Ultimately, what Trump, Republicans, etc. are trying to do with fossil fuels right now will ultimately fail. There's no going back now. We've reached a confluence where most of the world sees an existential threat, business sees an economic threat, and governments see a host of very expensive problems that only get more expensive if they don't act now.

I want to get a new router.  I'm thinking I like what the Synology RT2600ac is all about.  Also, I'm thinking/hoping that when I pull the trigger on a NAS, Synology to Synology will be easier.

I don't know, though.  This decision is harder than I thought it would be because I've wanted the ASUS RT AC88u for a long time.  The 8 LAN ports really intrigue me because I do a lot of wired connections to push my gigabit internet to my devices with as little degradation as possible.

Anyone get either the ASUS or Synology?  They're roughly the same price, give or take twenty bucks.

I guess they were almost done with principal photography, but the original directors were allowing a lot of improv, and the movie was taking a fairly humorous tone.  At least more so than what they wanted.

I saw Ron Estes at KCI today.  His Southwest flight was canceled like the rest of us.  Stood in line with what looked like an assistant for about an hour.

He's a thoroughly unimpressive guy.  Extremely quiet.  Pedestrian luggage.  Carried an actual briefcase.

I hope Texas starts getting better soon, too.

I was talking w/ my neighbor last weekend, and his sons play for Blue Valley North.  I guess the QB there this year is pretty good.  He is a JR, has an offer from KU already, and he's getting looked at by Texas, ND, etc.

I guess they're pretty bullish on winning state this year. I'm gloriously ignorant to local high school football, but his name is Graham Mertz.  Has a Hudl clip.  Looks pretty good.  6'4", 200(ish).

I doubt we'll be on the radar, but probably worth keeping an eye on.  Probably ends up being a high 3/low 4 star talent.

You guys are crazy

Veep is excellent, but if you work in tech, SV just really connects with you.  I think Mike Judge consistently hits the wavelength that connected people with Office Space.

The "Hot Dog/Not a Hot Dog" scene almost made me piss myself, and Gillfoyle vs. the Smart Fridge was amazing.

Also, I binged Westworld about a month ago.  Quite good.

I predict a big dud.  Dimowits think they have proof Trumpticles obstructed justice, ???   He appointed a special prosecutor to investigate russian hankypanky.  He would of squelched this move if he was trying to  obstruct.

Squelching it looks worse than letting him talk.

The key is letting him talk and then convincing the Republicans to let him get away with it, which is much more likely, because there are not bigger idiots and hypocrites than Congressional Democrats.

Panj, could not agree more friend.

I mean, sure, the Democrats aren't perfect (for the record, I'm not a registered Democrat), but, hey, let's assume the current stewards of Democracy aren't just going along with this nonsense for tax cuts.

Congressional Republicans, going back to making a gigantic deal over Bill Clinton getting some strange, have shown tremendous ability to prioritize things of great import and have shown tremendous courage.

I bailed on this conversation after I read a comparison about the Earth getting warmer because there are more people here.

Now we're into wood and whale oil burning.

An intelligent conversation can't occur here because this is the battlefield we choose to fight on.
