As close as all of these games have been, if Gus is calling them, we're going to need a medical staff hanging out right there with him to make sure he gets through the first weekend alive.

A lot of "Ahhh Ahhhhhhhhhh AHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!" moments already.

Would be interesting to see them bust them out on Big Monday.

Some way, somehow, in the ten years that I've religiously followed KSU football recruiting, I don't think I've ever seen them sign five prep defensive linemen in the same class.  If you count Klein, the grayshirt from last year, it's six.  They also supplemented that with two JUCO players for immediate depth.

Again, I'm not going to talk about quality, etc.  However, this, in my time following KSU, is unprecedented.

Not really a shocker, but I'd say that puts the odds of them coming back at around zero percent.

Billy Cosh is gone too, FWIW.

Jerome Tang Coaches Kansas State Basketball / New types of bigs needed?
« on: January 09, 2011, 12:01:22 PM »
I'm looking for HBIQ types to let me know if I'm off base here, but when I watch a game like yesterday, I keep thinking to myself, "Why are we recruiting guys like JHR, Samuels, Kelly, Diaz, etc. when our JYC game is predicated on big dudes cleaning the glass and creating an intimidating presence inside?"

I mean, yeah, we rebound well, but Moses and Pilgrim just went inside and wrecked our guys inside like a bull in a china shop.  Hence, the foul trouble.  If we're going to go with this philosophy, why aren't we going and getting more guys like Gipson?  He's a start in the right direction, but my thought is that if we're going to play this rough and tough JYC style, we need meat on the boards.  We need guys like Mario Boggan.  Just 6'7"-6'9" enforcer types that will just beat the living crap out of you.

We have all of these long and lanky bigs that are getting pounded inside.  I'm just curious as to why we don't see more of these bouncer-looking dudes in there that can just bloody you inside.

Kansas State Football / The Yankees know how to make it feel like home...
« on: December 28, 2010, 08:10:34 PM »
Quote from: John Currie
The stadium looks great! The field has been covered with a tarp. In fact, while we were eating dinner crews were plowing the snow off the tarp.  A big swath of the midfield was exposed and the grass looked as green as the middle of June.  Our players were taking lots of pictures of the stadium and surroundings – they are really enjoying the experience.

You really have to appreciate the lengths that those fine folks have gone to to make it feel like home for us K-State fans.

I don't know what we'd do at KSU without a good tarp.  There's a million and one uses for them.

Essentially Flyertalk / "Fly is down" ettiquete
« on: December 23, 2010, 10:18:57 AM »
I'm here at Great Clips, in a packed waiting area, and this dude walks up to the counter, while facing all of us, realizes his fly is down, and he zips in front of us.

In this situation, my gut feeling is that you own it, pay your bill, and readjust in the parking lot.  He went with full frontal zip.  Kind of confused if he made the right call.

Also relevant to point out this occurred in Missouri.  That may change the response.

I'm chatting with a friend about JYC basketball, and we're both in agreement that this team needs to get out there on the court and just start swinging at people.  They've lacked that killer instinct all year, and Martin can scream all he wants (and I don't have a problem with that), but it's not getting them anywhere.  Yanking them off of the court isn't getting them anywhere.  Having 'good' practices isn't getting them anywhere.  Nothing seems to bring up the intensity level to the point where they look like an aggressive, intimidating team.

So, I'm all for moving into the next stage of motivation.  I'd send someone out there to instigate a fight.  Just talk some serious game in someone's ear until they throw a punch.  Put some elbows in some dude's kidneys or his groin.  You know, Brady Morningstar stuff.  Once they swing, just let all hell break loose.

I don't know.  Just a thought.

Kansas State Football / If I could put together a defensive staff...
« on: November 28, 2010, 10:54:39 AM »
If I were Snyder, and I want to keep coaching, here's what I'd do in the off-season to increase the level of defensive coaching and recruiting.  This assume that Cosh is fired, Joe Bob is pushed into 'exploring other career options', and Latimore retires.  I know that the likelihood of these things happening is remote at best, but I'm going to dream.

Also, before anyone starts jumping all over me about Leavitt being the HCIW, I'm going to also assume in my dream world that Del Miller retires in the next year or two, and Snyder goes and finds some young, offensive guy to groom as the replacement.  Like this guy after Les Miles eventually gets fired: http://kansasstate.rivals.com/viewcoach.asp?Year=2011&Sport=1&Coach=282.

Co-Defensive Coordinator/Linebackers: Jim Leavitt (Also gets the "Assistant Head Coach" tag to justify increase in pay).
Co-Defensive Coordinator/Defensive Line: Chris Wilson (http://kansasstate.rivals.com/viewcoach.asp?Coach=84&Team=57&Sport=1&Year=2011)
Cornerbacks: Wesley McGriff (http://kansasstate.rivals.com/viewcoach.asp?Year=2011&Sport=1&Coach=108)
Safeties: Keith Burns

Leavitt would bring two things: One, he brings an immense amount of experience to the table.  Like him or not, he was actually a very successful coach considering the fact that he basically made a football program from scratch in D1-AA, made the move to D1-A, and guided them into a BCS conference.  All with an overall winning record.  That deserves and commands respect.  The second thing he brings to the table is intensity.  When you're working with a group lacking in talent, you need someone to push them every day.  Leavitt is that guy.  Also, the guy knows Florida like the back of his hand, so he'd have a lot of "ins" with high school coaches there.

Also, as a bonus, if something happens to Snyder, health wise, in the next few years, Leavitt would be a decent guy to bring out of the bullpen to finish off a season.

Chris Wilson is a guy that I've had my eye on for a while.  The guy is originally from Texas, went to Oklahoma, and he spent ten years coaching in the Big 12 between Colorado and OU.  His recruiting territory was Texas and Louisiana, two of our biggest states at this point.  He's been a part of the Mississippi State resurgence, and if we put the right money together, you never know.

Adding McGriff would be awesome.  The dude knows Texas and Florida, so we'd have a capable recruiter in those areas.   It would also allow us to spread out and give more individual coaching to the defensive secondary, and if this season is any indicator, they need it.

Anyway, that would be the staff I'd assemble.  Put Wilson up in the box and give him responsibility.  Let Leavitt coach on the field.  Get McGriff on the road and let him work his magic.

THAT would be a defensive staff I could be proud of.

Kansas State Football / Depth Chart for Mizzou is up...
« on: November 08, 2010, 01:30:54 PM »
Notables:

Tremaine Thompson is listed as a starter  :surprised: :surprised: :surprised:
Starting QB is Coffman OR Klein   :surprised: :surprised:
William Powell is backup RB   :ck:
David Garrett is the starter at LB/S Hybrid position and backup corner  (at how little depth we have on defense that he's listed twice on two-deep)

Kansas State Football / Tre Walker had 11 tackles

I don't really have much to add to that other than the fact that I'm really impressed by this kid.

It will be nice seeing this kid mature a little more, gain some additional athleticism, and play next to A. Brown.  Assuming we stick with the 4-2-5 (assuming Snyder keeps Cosh), that's not a bad tandem.

Aside from Zimmerman, this kid has been the most impressive newcomer to the defense, IMO.

http://www.buildingthedam.com/2010/9/3/1655936/inside-tcus-4-2-5-defense

This is a great article talking about how TCU runs their 4-2-5.  Basically, they keep it simple every single down.  They teach their secondary coverages over a three day span in the Spring.  That's it.  They've essentially broken it down into a math equation.

Can someone please tell me what we do with the 4-2-5 that's different from what they do?  Other than the obvious difference in that they have a competent defensive coaching staff and we have a bald guy that mainly drools on himself in the box.

One thing I notice is that we don't appear to shift the safeties down that much.  We tend to run some form of deep Cover 2 at all times, regardless of formation, but I don't always spend a lot of time looking at the defensive alignment because I've always been much more interested in what the offense is doing pre-snap.

TIA.

Kansas State Football / Facilities question (calling Dax...)
« on: October 16, 2010, 07:15:05 PM »
Aside from the $50 million just approved by the KBOR, wasn't there another request approved for amenities in the East Side Upper Deck that was lumped in with the future renovation of Old Stadium to become the center for Campus recruiting?  If I remember right, this was several months ago.

Or am I just imagining this?

Which would mean that KSU is looking at $50 million plus, right?

Do they sell Sweet 16 shirts at Dillon's?  Should I be able to inform my relatives back in Kansas that they can go into any Dillon's store and grab a "KSU Sweet 16" shirt?

I remember that during this time of year, you couldn't swing a dead cat without hitting some rack of KU shirts by the dairy products, seafood, deli, etc.  Should I wait until we get to the Final Four/Win National Championship, or can I just go ahead and start making requests now?

TIA.

One day, I was just watching a game, saw Iowa State, and I thought, "God, these guys suck.  I hope they lose every game they play."

I have no idea why.  They haven't upset me in any way.  It's not like KSU really loses to them all that often in anything.  I just feel like they're completely inferior and worthless.

It's kind of like how I feel about Canada.

Anyway, is this strange or unhealthy?  It kind of makes me feel like a bad person, but since they're subhuman, I don't really care all that much.
