Jerome Tang Coaches Kansas State Basketball / Gimmick scheduling
« on: June 10, 2014, 01:38:33 PM »
If I were AD... I'd be all over gimmick scheduling.

One thing I'd do is make a nonconference schedule of all the DI teams it's been the longest since KSU has last played:

Evansville Aces (KSU hasn't played them 1939)
Villanova (1940)
Seton Hall (1940)
UC-Santa Clara (1948)
Canisius (1949)
Ohio State (1951)
Yale (1952)
Loyola Marymount (1955)
Drake (1956)
Seattle (1958)
Air Force (1963)
South Dakota State (1963)
UCLA (1964)

That looks fine, so the next year I'd keep going:
St. John's (1965)
Maryland (1965)
Stanford (1965)
Penn State (1966)
Cincinnati (1968)
Indiana State (1969)
St. Francis (1970)
New Mexico State (1970)
Pacific (1971)
Eastern Kentucky (1972)
La-Lafayette (1973)
Montana State (1974)
Hofstra (1974)

Looks okay, but maybe not in that order...

Another year maybe I'd schecdule only teams we've never played before.  Or only schools that are older than KSU.  It would always something!

And in football, we'd totally be playing the wildcat noncon trifecta one year (Kentucky, Northwestern, Arizona).

Anyway, that's what I'd do.  And don't try to tell me I wouldn't.

Rumblings that oscar told Angel to throw the NCAA game last year, so that he wouldn't set expectations too high in his first year (something he cited as causing his difficulties at Illinois).  This might be why Angel transferred...

Essentially Flyertalk / OT: tv repairman in NYC?
« on: May 20, 2013, 02:40:52 PM »
My girlfriend just hooked up her television for the first time in months in her new apartment.  It's a Philips from 2005.  All she gets is audio, with no picture.  The screen is off completely.  I told her she needs to buy a new one, but she'd rather spend the money on shoes.  She wants me to fix it if possible.  Oh, also, she lost the remote years ago, so I'm just working off the buttons on the side of the unit.

Should I take the back off the unit and check the capacitors, or would the tv be completely dead (no audio) if that was issue?  Maybe I just need to find a new girlfriend?  Thanks!

Because I felt like wasting a bit of time, upon no popular demand whatsoever: here’s my list of the 40 top KSU players, broken down by position.

My starting 5 is: Pullen, Richmond, Rolando, Boozer and Beasley.

I've little doubt Angel Rodriguez will be on this list by the time he’s done, but McGruder is the only active player in my top 40 now.  Even so, I'm sure there's a bit of "recency bias" here, especially further down the position lists... but anyway, enjoy!

Random question for those who knew him: Was he fat when he picked his user name years ago?  If not, what did it mean?

I was just thinking about this due to the splash screen photo that opens up with goEMAW.com... plus I've always kind of wondered this.  I mean, I've seen his name on KSU boards since around the time the very first one started -- in like, 1998, or something like that? -- but I never met him.

17
Overall I thought we played Michigan pretty even, except Hardaway looked silly good and our shots weren't falling.  ("I like big buts!")  Obviously, Hardaway was the best player on the court.  When we shut him down in the first half, we were OK.  After he got knocked silly, we were okay.  But he sunk us in the first part of the 2d half.  If McGruder was still on our team, we might've had somebody to go shot-for-shot with Hardaway, but he's clearly not.

Our motion offense got us some good shots, but we don't have good shooters.  We weren't getting bodies on bodies, and we deserved to get outrebounded.  That's 2 games in a row where we've been pushed around in the interior, and it will keep happening against teams with a pulse unless we change something.

McGruder:  Doesn't seem to care.  He seriously seems clinically depressed.  As in, that's a actual diagnosis from me.  oscar's offense has room for dribble-drives (Angel, Tay), but McG didn't even try until the last quarter of the game.  That's when he finally got on track.  Woof.

Angel:  Solid.

Will:  Solid enough.  Sorry, I didn't see anything to hate.

Omari:  I grade him on a curve, and I didn't see him do anything egregious (other than that awful attempt to dribble away after a steal).  His defense looked decent.

Southwell:  The less said the better.

Nino:  He's fine, but we're not a very good team if he's in our top 5.

Big Gip:  A good banger.  I think he had his typical game.  Love the mohawk.

Diaz:  Took a couple stupid shots.  Looked soft on defense.  He's a project, but there's hope.

Tay:  Didn't stand out to me.

JO:  Great game.

DJamer:  He's got upside is about all I can say.

Not up to KK standards, but those are my thoughts.

If McGruder gets into a therapist, perhaps we can be decent in the Big 12.

(EDIT to say this reminded me of the Duke game, where we got outclassed by Kyrie.)

18
I'd hoped we could keep it quiet for just a couple more months!!!  SO CLOSE!

Welcome to Not The Big East.   :nono:

20
Seemed like a slow day here, so I thought I'd give us something to talk about.  Here's the best basketball coaches we've had in the past 25 years.  These are facts:

1.  Bob Huggins.  Highest overall winning percentage of anyone on this list.  Won 700 games for a reason and is a Hall of Fame lock.  Absolutely turned around KSU in one year.  Brought in the highest-profile recruit in KSU history, plus the school’s all-time scorer.  Brought us: Michael Beasley, Jacob Pullen, Bill Walker, Jamar Samuels, Dom Sutton.

2.  oscar Weber.  Only guy on the list to coach a team to the NCAA national championship game, or to be named national coach of the year.  Combined overall winning record against the other coaches on this list, including wins over Huggins and Kruger teams in the NCAA tournament.  Ranked to high?  Maybe.  We'll see.  Brought us: (incomplete).

3.  Lon Kruger.  Why are there so many ex-Illinois coaches in the Big 12?  Kruger won at KSU, Florida, Illinois, UNLV.  Three-time conference coach of the year.  Went 4-for-4 with NCAA appearances at KSU, including Elite Eight run.  Brought us the best NBA player of the era (Mitch Richmond).  Clown-suited the guy below him on this list head-to-head.  Brought us: Richmond, Steve Henson, Ski Jones, Jean Derouillere, Fat Fred McCoy.

4.  Frank Martin.  Conference coach of the year at KSU.  Four NCAA appearances in five years at KSU, including one Elite Eight run.  Brought us: The entire current roster of awesomeness, Denis Clemente, Curtis Kelly.

5.  Dana Altman.  Solid career.  Conference coach of the year at KSU, plus three other times.  As a young coach he murdered it on the recruiting trail, but there was an odd disconnect between that and his actual coaching style.  Brought us:  KSU’s first McDonald’s All-American.  Can anyone name him?

TOP 40 SCORERS SIGNED BY THESE COACHES:
1.  Pullen (Huggins)
4.  Ski Jones (Kruger)
6.  Henson (Kruger)
9.  Richmond (Kruger)
11.  Jam Sam (Huggins)
15.  Denis (Frank)
21.  McGruder (Frank)
33.  Jean Derouillere (Kruger)
37.  Beasley (Huggins)
38.  Will Scott (Kruger)

Man, there's a lot of Kruger and Huggins on that list…

Merge if already discussed elsewhere...

I know a group two groups of girls over at Lawrence that Bill Self bought a round of Sex On The Beach Wet Pussy shots for.  He creeped them out.

Apparently that's his shot of choice, so if you see him out maybe buy him one.  Also, he's planning to get a separation from his wife.

22
So I recall a very vocal group on this board liking Billy Clyde as a coach.  In the Big XII rankings thread, several (not all) ranked Gillespie ahead of Weber.

Now, I'm not sure whether there's any overlap between Gillespie lovers and Weber haters, but I don't see a big difference.  For the most part, Weber's numbers are better.

1)  Both were fired.
2)  Both are white men.
3)  Weber had a better overall record (.669) than Gillespie (.622) after being fired (i.e., not even counting last year's 8-23 train wreck for BCG).
4)  Weber won 4 conference titles in 14 seasons; Gillespie won 1 in 8 seasons.
5)  Weber went to Sweet 16 three times in 14 seasons; Gillespie once in 8 seasons.
6)  Weber went to the Elite 8, Final Four, and championship game.

Anyone who loves Billy Clyde and hates Weber, please clue me in.  Now, BCG didn't have a losing record at UK (in two seasons) but he sucked bad enough to get fired.

 :dunno:

(Of course, maybe BCG sucks as a coach -- his team last year was embarrassing -- in which case this comparison is not complimentary.)

23
Seriously.  He won't make us much better than we were under Frank, but I think he'll continue to keep us around 4-5th place in the conference and a Round of 32 NCAA team.  His history says as much.

Of course, the ultimate test is his recruiting.  He needs to hire a recruiter.  HIRE A RECRUITER, COACH!

 :kstatriot:

(So sue me for going against the board wisdom, I don't care...)
