Essentially Flyertalk / Which one of you is in jail this afternoon...

A 25-year-old Salina man was tased and arrested Wednesday afternoon in Manhattan after exhibiting what authorities described as "bizarre" behavior in which he knocked a woman to the ground and attempted to elude Riley County Police officers  in a car.

The incident that led to James Moore's arrest began at 12:07 p.m. when authorities said he ran at a woman in a city parking lot in the 300 block of Poyntz Avenue in downtown  Manhattan, knocking her to the ground.

The woman was identified as Erin Fingalsen, 46, of Manhattan. Fingalsen sustained injuries to her left shoulder and left elbow from the attack, said Riley County Police Lt. Richard Fink. Fingalsen and Moore didn't know each other and the attack was unprovoked, Fink said.

After knocking Fingalsen to the ground, Fink said, Moore  walked off into the parking lot making what witnesses said were "yelling sounds" but no spoken words.

By this time, Fink said, police had been notified and many citizens had come to the aid of  Fingalsen.

David Colburn, 55, a local business owner, provided his business for shelter for those who felt threatened by Moore. Colburn then moved into the parking lot to monitor Moore's behavior while awaiting police, Fink said.

Colburn observed Moore get into a silver Nissan Altima and made an effort to keep him from fleeing. Moore then began to leave the area and turned the vehicle toward Colburn and accelerated, causing Colburn to take cover behind a structure, Fink said.

Colburn used an electric bicycle to follow Moore and report his location to police.

After Moore fled the area, Fink said, he was seen on the west side of Manhattan doing "donuts" in the Frank Anneberg Park parking lot, located  near Anderson  Avenue and  Anneberg Drive on the city's southwest side.

A Manhattan city worker witnessed the reckless driving and called police, who located Moore driving on Kimball Avenue at Vanesta. Officers tried to stop Moore but he fled, and a  pursuit was initiated.

Officers deployed spike strips at West Bank Way and Little Kitten, flattening all four of Moore's tires. Moore continued to drive at speeds between 20 and 30 mph, leading police to a residence at 2307  Cheryl Terrace in Manhattan, where he stopped in the private driveway.

Moore refused to come out of the car and officers used a taser on Moore and "gained compliance," Fink said.

Moore was arrested in connection with battery, aggravated assault and attempting to flee and elude. He was being held in the Riley County Jail on $7,500 bond

Kansas State's Will Spradling matures in Europe
Kansas State's sophomore guard plays a key role for a young U.S. team, and gains confidence from his success.

MANHATTAN — Will Spradling didn't treat his recent basketball tour through Macedonia like a vacation. The two-week trip felt more like an audition to Kansas State's sophomore guard.

Playing on a traveling all-star team made up of other U.S. underclassmen with a coach — Baylor director of basketball operations Tim Maloney — challenging him from start to finish, Spradling took the seven games seriously.

He quickly realized the opportunity. Not only was he on an international stage, he was with a squad that in many ways resembles the new K-State roster he began playing summer pickup games with this week.

"I'm going to have to be a leader this season," Spradling said. "I'm one of the only returners. Only a few of us have played big minutes. We need to step up and show the new players what direction they need to have, how we work here and what it's going to be like every day."

Time will tell how much of a commanding role Spradling takes next season, but the last few weeks have given him confidence.

While surrounded by youth and unfamiliar faces in European gyms, he helped his team to a 6-1 record and a tournament championship against professional teams.

He averaged 18 points, five assists and was tournament MVP.

"He was terrific," Maloney said. "You look at him, and he's one of those players that looks very unassuming, but truth be told he's an assassin. He's really a very skilled and intelligent basketball player who plays with great passion.

"He is a great teammate, and he did everything we asked of him very well. I was completely impressed with him."

On and off the court.

While Spradling earned respect by twice leading his team in scoring — 25 points against Bulgaria and 23 against Poland — and making good decisions at both guard positions, he also had an effect during practices and down time.

Spradling remembers Maloney telling him at the start of the trip that he had spoken with K-State coach Frank Martin, and that he had a message for him: "Take charge this trip and run the practices."

"Will made sure everybody was communicating, and helped his teammates understand what they were supposed to be doing," Maloney said. "You could tell he really wanted us to be the best team that we could be."

Spradling also challenged himself to become a more complete offensive player. He averaged 6.4 points as a K-State freshman, but his contributions often didn't stretch far beyond making the occasional jump shot or taking charges.

Next to Jacob Pullen, the program's career scoring leader, that was enough. But with the veteran guard now graduated and six newcomers joining the program, Spradling knows he will need to bring more than his words to the court to fill that void.

So he tried to expand his game while overseas. He attacked defenders off the dribble, fought through contact to make baskets inside and kept a lookout for open teammates on the perimeter.

"I had to take on more of a scoring role," Spradling said. "That's something I didn't do much of here last year. So I felt like this was a big confidence booster to me. It showed me that the stuff I've been working on throughout the spring is paying off. I'm getting a lot better."

The competition might not have been Big 12 caliber every game, but his efforts were a step in the right direction. If he could succeed in Europe, why can't he do the same in Manhattan?

"I knew Will was a good player coming in, but now I look at him as a guy I hope drinks a potion and gets a 24-hour virus every time he plays Baylor," Maloney said. "He did not back down from anything. He was going up against men and found a way to drive to the basket and finish. He was big for us in every game."

I'm pretty sure I'm going to be left behind.  Would any others like to join me for a beer or something?  There are probably going to be lots of looters out and about.  Anyone with guns should bring what they have and share.  I'm not even sure what the rules are post-rapture.  My luck, my girlfriend won't be taken either and I'll have to stay home and watch Glee on DVR and miss all the fun.

WICHITA | Police in Wichita say a 57-year-old man lived with the body of his dead fiancee for several days praying she would be brought back to life.

Investigators don't suspect foul play, but an autopsy on the 54-year-old woman was planned Thursday.

Calls from neighbors concerned about the woman's welfare sent police to the home the couple shared Wednesday night. Officers said the man didn't want to let the officers in. He was detained after they smelled a strong odor.

The man told officers he was praying for divine intervention to bring his fiancee back to life. He was taken to a hospital for a mental evaluation.

Police believe the woman died about one week earlier.

Essentially Flyertalk / I heard some sort of voice today.
« on: May 10, 2011, 10:01:01 PM »
I was at my desk this afternoon.  I face the wall when sitting at my desk.  A co-worker came by and stopped to talk to me about the NBA playoffs.  I turned my chair around to the left about 90 degrees and had my head turned the rest of the way talking to him. He was saying something about Okahoma City and out of nowhere I heard a male voice in my right ear.  I couldn't understand what it said.  It sounds like no more than 4 or 5 words and maybe lasted 2 seconds. The thing that was really strange was not only did I hear it but I felt it.  It felt almost electric and it sent a shiver through me and my adrenaline went up a bit.  I felt it around my ear too. Almost like a really tiny shockwave had hit my ear and the right side of my head.  My ear felt tingly for about 20 seconds after.  I looked at my co-worker and tried to see if he noticed or heard anything but he never acted like he did and I never asked if he heard it.  For some reason I feel like it's going to happen again. I hope it does.

Solo Osama hunter wants part of bin Laden bounty

GREELEY, Colo. – The Colorado construction worker who flew last year to Pakistan on a one-man mission to hunt down Osama bin Laden says he played a part in bin Laden's death.

Gary Faulkner said Wednesday he'd like one-quarter of the $25 million reward that was offered for hunting down bin Laden. He said he'd use it for his nonprofit foundation.

Faulkner was found last year in the woods of northern Pakistan armed with a pistol, sword and night-vision goggles. The Greeley, Colo., man says he believes he had a hand in forcing bin Laden out of the mountains where he supposedly was hiding.

Bin Laden was killed at a compound in northwestern Pakistan early Monday. U.S. officials say he had been living there for up to six years.

Lawrence police arrested a 21-year-old Lawrence man Wednesday afternoon after he was accused of striking a 31-year-old Lawrence woman in the face inside Dollar General store, 1811 W. Sixth St.

Sgt. Matt Sarna, a police spokesman, said officers were called about 12:15 p.m. to the store for a possible fight, and they discovered bystanders restraining the suspect. Witnesses alleged the man entered the store with his pants down and struck the woman in the face. The suspect and victim did not know each other. The woman had a minor injury to her face but refused medical attention at the scene, police said.

Sarna said witnesses also alleged the man had been walking on Sixth Street prior to the incident with his pants pulled down. The man was arrested and taken to the Douglas County Jail on charges of battery and indecent exposure.

Picked up a couple jars of olives at the local mart last night.  Jar of roasted garlic stuffed olives and a jar of jalepeno stuffed olives.  Walked over to the liquor store an picked up a big ass bottle of Ketel.  Going to enjoy some dirty martinis tonight as I make the world go away and grill some dead animal parts.

If you haven't enjoyed a dirty martini yet I recommend trying one or two. Not three though... never drink three.
