I worked in the field team of a restaurant corporation a few years ago. They had this huge party/meeting in Vegas announcing their big plans for the new year which included raises and relocating almost all of us. They moved me from Chicago to Orange County. Two months later I was driving to a meeting and got a call from a dude from HR I had never talked to or even heard of. He apologized the he had to be the one to tell me, but I was being laid off. We really value your service, it's not performance based, etc. I took my severance package, turned my car around and went and got hammered. They ended up laying off 60% of the field team and 40% of the company. Apparently there was a big balloon payment on their loan and they needed cash fast. It was fun while it lasted, I guess.

Oh man. Love me some Darren Pang. Dude just oozes hockey and played the most mental position of them all. Provides great insights and has the enthusiasm of a little kid opening presents on Christmas Day. Love catching his broadcasts, regardless of who's playing.

NHL needs to adopt international rules i think to be more successful. The institutionalized fighting is absolutely Fake Sugar Dick (WARNING, NOT THE REAL SUGAR DICK!). It's supposed to be the highest level of the sport, but instead of fielding the 5 best hocky players in the world on each team you have the 4 best hockey players and one dumbass who likes to get punched in the face.

JFC, eff no.  I'm not married to fighting, frankly I don't care if they have it or don't, there's not much of it relatively speaking.  However, I'm guessing you haven't seen a lot of pros playing IIHF rules, its crazy boring.  The ice is too big and the game is not physical at all.  Did you watch those KHL games during the lockout?  Not wanting fighting is one thing, instituting international rules for an 8 month season would kill the league in North America.

This.

While international rules make for a more 'pure' hockey, it's rough ridin' boring. Outside of the NHL I can only watch olympic hockey and that's really only because it's the olympics. Goons are few and far between these days. Yes, they exist, but not at the rate they used to. Teams can't afford to fill up a roster spot with a one dimensional player who's a liability on both sides of the puck. While it doesn't make or break my fandom, I do enjoy fighting here and there. It can change momentum and pump up a team, much like a big hit in football.

Big time Sharks fan here. I got into hockey growing up watching the Wichita Thunder who put together some great runs in my youth.

Good advice on buying NHL '13 to better understand the game. I know I was confused by a lot of the penalties when I first started watching. Check out the wikipedia pages for simpler explanations for rules and penalties.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Hockey_League_rules

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Penalty_(ice_hockey)

Keep in mind NHL rules and penalties vary a bit from the Olympics, international play, etc.

I love it because it's fast paced and physical. A man's sport. For instance, if you're being a douche, somebody will simply kick your ass. There are penalties and ass-kickings that prevent diving (the equivalent of flopping in the NBA or soccer) so it's not a bunch of pussies laying down looking for a whistle. Very physical and intense, rabid fans. Games are also very affordable if you're near a team. Went to the Sharks/Kings playoff games last year a few rows behind the bench and spent about $90 per. Not bad at all. Can't wait to get this thing started!

Unless you have some special lady to take out or impress, I firmly believe NYE is merely an excuse for bars/clubs to overcharge their patrons and therefore a waste of disposable income.

This.

Had plans but I'm not feeling like getting out in this weather amongst the amatuer drunk drivers.  Instead, I'm getting down on season 3 of 30 Rock and a twelve pack of Snow Day.  :lick:

And this.

NYE is a time for ridiculous drink prices and jam-packed bars filled with (for the most part) idiots that only go out once a year and have no idea how to handle their liquor. The best times I've had are at someone's house, drinking and playing some sort of game. Beer pong, board games, cards, etc. Don't have to worry about anyone driving or spending a stupid amount of money for a watered down gin and tonic.

With that said, I'll be going to bed in a few hours as I drew the short straw and have to be at work by 4:30  :dubious:

Wow, I missed this thread the first time around as well.

Great memories from fishing with my grandpa. My grandma would pack us lunches (usually consisting of PB&J, Cheetos and a Coke) and we'd be on our way to Kanopolis. Spent the day there fishing channel cat that we would take home and clean for dinner. Great bonding time. Would also hit up Marion Reservoir for bass (catch and release) and Lake Inman (if grandpa was lazy).

I haven't fished since well before I was able to drink so I'm sure that enhances the experience tenfold.

Just booked the round trip flight from Santa Ana to Phoenix for $179  . Getting in on the evening of the 2nd and heading out the morning of the 5th. Don't think I'll make it in time for the pep rally.

I was in Tempe 4-5 years ago for NYE and had a blast downtown. Other than that, no clue on what to do or where to go.

Rotation with guys we currently have at this moment:

Santana
Guthrie
Mendoza
Chen
Smith

(Paulino and Duffy in the mix when rehabbed. And eff Hoch. He will never be on any of my lists.)

Kind of realistic but not really wishlist rotation:

Dan Haren
David Price
Santana
Guthrie
Mendoza/Chen/Paulino/Duffy

Guthrie will be exploring free agency. DM has expressed interest, but also said they both needed to explore their options. I certainly wouldn't mind having Guthrie in the rotation, but the price needs to be right. He made $8 mil this year and I don't think I'd give him much more for that next year. Also, Guthrie is looking for a 3 year deal and DM doesn't want anything over 2.

Another item of note is Soria's $8 mil option for next year being declined. Soria has expressed high interest in staying in KC and DM would like to work out a new, incentive-ridden deal. I could go either way with him. It'd be nice to have the bullpen depth, but we did great without him this year. I really don't think we need him. Definitely not $8 mil need him. But then again, we will most likely be paying Luke Hochevar a ridiculous amount of money next year and we certainly don't need him.

Whoa whoa whoa whoa...........lol wut???

Royals were 44/64 in save opportunities. That is completely unacceptable. I hope you're joking.

"Great" was indeed a poor choice of words (I'm so used to losing that anything above average to me is now great). And I was referring to the bullpen as a whole. 561 innings and a 3.17 ERA collectively is pretty solid, especially considering our youth. Holland converted on 80% of his  this year, matching Soria's percentage for 2011. Plus he's coming of TJ which is always makes me a bit uneasy. My point is not to say Soria sucks and he doesn't have a place on this team. I like him and I do hope we resign him. What I am hoping for is a little relief in his contract as we need to free up as much money as we can for starting pitching. Obviously the first step would be getting rid of Francoeur and Hochevar but I'm past believing any of that will happen.

Not a bad pickup at all. Gave up essentially nothing in return for a pitcher with above average upside. The league leading 39 homers last year is a bit concerning but his H/9, SO/9, BB/9 and SO/BB ratios all stayed in line. If we don't want to give up an arm and a leg for a decent pitcher, we're going to have to gamble on a few guys coming off of down years or who are a bit questionable. 13M is about right, given the position we're in. DM has said that we're not done. I'd love to add another similar deal (something like Haren) for close to nothing and then add a younger arm for one of our better players and a prospect. Is this wishful thinking? Probably so.

I <3 my bf/gf/so sooooo much, they're the best ever... here's 1000 pictures of my 3 month old... bitch and moan about my job... something vague for attention to make people ask questions and then never answer them...

Rinse and repeat.

This is probably 90% of people in general but it seems like more so for my hometown.

There's someone with a K-State tag in my apartment complex here in Huntington Beach whose car I walk by every time I come home from work. I've never encountered them but have often wondered if they post here.

"What makes this group unique is that they all share a common characteristic: a deep pit, or fossa, in the loreal area between the eye and the nostril on either side of the head. These loreal pits are the external openings to a pair of extremely sensitive infrared detecting organs, which in effect give the snakes a sixth sense that helps them to find and perhaps even judge the size of the small warm-blooded prey on which they feed."

"Experiments have shown that, when deprived of their senses of sight and smell, these snakes can strike accurately at moving objects that are less than 0.2°C warmer than the background."

:sdeek:

Ugh. Snakes already freak me out. This does not help.  :ohno:

Really been interested lately in old school studies and experiments where rules and regulations were minimal. It's pretty crazy what you used to be able to do.

Pitching coach Dave Eiland sees, in Hochevar, a pitcher “who is starting to figure some things out,” and who is “making strides” while stressing “the growing process is over now; it’s time to go out there and be consistent.”

Really? Is he? This is the biggest reason we won't succeed under the DM regime. When is enough enough? We already played this game with Kyle Davies. To an extent we're playing it with Francoeur. DM and his minions just can't admit when they make a mistake. The MLB Draft is far from an exact science. 1st round draft picks don't all pan out. It's okay. It's part of the game. But to trot him out to the mound every five days for five years, getting the results he's given us, and now we're still saying "he's almost there" when his numbers are ungodly is an insult to us as fans. He's due for arbitration next year and we're looking at around $5 million. $5 million that could be put towards real free agent proven talent. I don't know why get surprised and/or upset anymore.

I lived in Chicago briefly about 2 years ago and went to a few of the watch parties. I met a decent amount of non-tucks there and, for the most part, enjoyed myself. We had the back room to ourselves and I'd say there were about 20-30 people there for each game. I lived about a mile away so I could drink as much as I wanted and just walked home. Definitely give it a shot and see what you think. If it sucks, don't go back. I lived right next to a Nebraska bar and it was always a blast getting them riled up. Chicago, good times.
