Kansas State Football / Re: Nebraska's struggle for relevance.
« on: September 04, 2023, 10:56:26 PM »
I wasn't aware this was a thing, until last week, but there are quite a few CFB voices who think Rhule is a charlatan. Even before the game I saw a lot of non Nebraska fans shitting on him.

Yeah I think his stint at Carolina really hurt his reputation. All the hardcore husked fans in my life thought he was a mediocre to bad hire, and that he didn’t have much to bring other than talk. I thought it was about the best hire they could have made realistically. I do think he’ll get them back to 8-9 win seasons within the next 3 years. If he doesn’t he’ll likely be gone as well.

The days are gone when one walks into the Hawk's Nest and walks out with an easy W.

I don't know how tough it will be to dominate a team that lost 7 of their last 8 games in the prior season, despite that team returning an awesome quarterback.

Some bean guy was playing during most of those losses.

Goes back to my point about the talent cliff after the 1st team.

We have a relatively early bye week and then a gauntlet after that.  I'd lean more towards 9-3 because I'm not entirely convinced we can generate as much offense as we did last year without deuce.  Agree with OP prediction with the caveat that we probably drop one of the @ OSU or at home against TCU.  I also think @ Mizzou is what catzacker of olden days would call an absolute dog fight.

Early bye week is a big concern.

Will Howard is going to throw like a bajillion TDs this season, so I am not concerned about the offense.

We're less than 2 weeks away from the 2023 KSU Cats football season. Post your season predictions here!

Week 1 vs SEMO: W. next.

Week 2 vs Troy: W. This will be a big step up in competition, Troy finished 2022 ranked #19. They return their 6th year QB and their entire D line, however their best WR transferred to Oregon and they lost the D coordinator. Cats get the W without too much trouble.

Week 3 @ Mizzou: W. This game does concern me quite a bit. The game wasn't particularly close last year, but Mizzou got noticably better throughout the season, and has a ton of talent. They also have an offensive coordinator for the first time under Drinkwitz. Their biggest downside is the unknown at QB. It's Brady cook vs a few freshman fighting for playing time. We'll see how that works out. Cats pull out a W but it's not a cakewalk like in '22.

Cats go 3-0 in nonconference play.

Week 4 vs UCF: W. UCF has a nice running game, including their QB who was their leading rusher with 862 yards in 2022. They will be a pretty decent team in the big 12, and as it's the first conference game of the year won't be worn down from a tougher schedule yet. Cats better come to play.

Week 5 Bye

Week 6 @ OSU: W. Cats absolutely destroyed this team last year, and I'm not sure Oklahome State did much to get better. A lot of outlets are picking OSU in this one, and I'm not sure why. Maybe just blind faith in Gundy. OSU lost a ton of players via the transfer portal, granted they did bring in a lot of talent as well, but it will take some time to get this team up to speed. I think the cats pull this one out on a Friday night in Stillwater.

Week 7 @ Tx Tech: L. The first loss of the season. Tech is picked as a darkhorse to win the big 12, and it's a pretty tough place to play. Cats will need to have a special performance to pull this one out.

Week 8 vs TCU: W. KSU bounces back with a nice win against a tough TCU team, although not as good as the 2022 version TCU will still be dangerous. They lose a lot of talent in their starting QB, best WR, and best RB. Expect the new offensive coordinator (Kendall Briles, gross) to put up a ton of points with Chandler Morris at QB and Alabama transfer Trey Sanders at RB. Cats pull this one off in Manhattan, though.

Week 9 vs Houston: W. Houston will not be very good. Holgerson is not a good coach. This is probably the easiest game outside of SEMO.

Week 10 @ Texas: L. Ugh I hate Texas. I hate Sark. Ewers is a big weirdo. But, they're super talented and it seems Sark is putting it all together. Winning in Austin is tough and it's been about a bajillion years since KSU won there. It's an L.

Week 11 vs Baylor: W. Is Baylor good? I don't know, maybe? Dave Aranda was supposedly the best coach in the Big 12, but after a losing season in 2022 the doubts are creeping in. Was that an anomaly or the new norm? I think they're better than 2022, but not good enough to beat the cats at home. This is probably the biggest unknown game of the year in my book.

Week 12 @ KU: W. Oof I'm scared of this one boys. Leipold is the real deal, and Kansas has some huge momentum going into this season. If they can stay healthy they'll be a handful in Lawrence. I'm counting on there being a few key injuries and after the starters their talent really drops off. Cats get the 2 and keep the streak alive, but it's a close one.

Week 13 vs ISU: Farmageddon baby. Cats win this one bc half of ISU's team is in the slammer. Big W to finish off the regular season.

Regular season record: 10-2

Big 12 Championship: Cats play Texas in the championship and take the L as the longhorns walk away from the big 12 champions.

Bowl game: Cats sneak into a NY6 game. Who knows if they win, but let's be honest they probably won't.

There has to be at least 10 guys that will be drafted in the next 2 years. Howard, K Johnson, Sinnot, Beebe, some other OL, Suemalo, Duke, Matlack?,  our entire secondary. And linebackers is considered the best unit and I didn’t name anyone. They seem either too young (osunsami , Clifton) or too old (green) to be drafted soon. I was going to bet the farm on the cats last year because of all the NFL prospects but thought bitcoin was a better bet 🤡. This year going to trust the cats and smash the over on 8 wins.

What in the world would lead you to believe that Seumalo or Matlack will be drafted? Neither of them have shown NFL potential yet. Duke would have to have a monster year to recover from the the coaching staff did to him last year, and Howard isn't even sniffing nfl draft boards. Keagan Johnson hasn't played a snap for the cats yet and we're already talking about him going to the nfl? come on.

My guess is we have maybe 3 draftees next year, Beebe and 1 or 2 more sneak in there in the late rounds.

The endowment (huge, btw) pledged like up to 250MM.

A very sad state of affairs when money raised for education has to be used to bail out an Athletics Department.

I really don't care, do u?

maybe some of the people (not you) who donated money to that foundation will. I know if our AD took out a loan on the money I gave to KSU for scholarship/educational purposes I'd be pissed, and would make it well known.

I would guess they would be lucky to get 10 million per school.  Some of those schools are bottom tier.

yeah maybe in the 7ish range?

12
The price will go up, and Gov. Kelly and our other boosters in the gov't will foot the bill.

You’re welcome, poors

This is basically an entirely new stadium w a budget of $300 million, right? Seems very difficult to pull off. Baylor spent 265 mil on their new stadium 11 years ago, and they had the brick wall tarp to show for it.

14
looks very very nice. Really interested to see what gets built. Also IMO Gene needs to knock off this talk of stopping on facilities and built a new East Stadium.

Felix played well and so did boye-doe

Josh Hayes is doing well also

I'll be honest I was a bit worried about FAU being a total bust in the nfl. today helped temper some of those concerns. EBD has a legit shot at making the chiefs roster I think? which is insane considering he wasn't even signed as an UDFA.

Deuce obvs amazing.

Did Kade get any playing time?

Cats #17 in coaches poll.

Too lazy to look it up but I wonder when the last time we were ranked preseason. 2015?

Ok I looked it up. These are AP polls, but I'm assuming we'll be around 17th in AP as well.

2017 preseason #20 Finished NR
2014 preseason #20 Finished #18
2012 preseason #22 Finished #12
2004 preseason #13 Finished NR
2003 preseason #7 Finished #14

Luke'd that one.

Or we take ASU and UCONN, leave Utah to the wolves for the MWC.
I vote this

also fine with leaving ASU out. Not sure I want their president involved

21
I don't really want to, but I think it would be fun to take UConn just so Arizona St and Utah know there is one less seat at the table

yormark should just leak that big 12 officials are in Connecticut or something. Really get everyone riled up.

I'm more and more pro UCONN.  If BY can split off the basketball $$, the conference could be getting a pretty legit payout.  ASU and Utah do not help that cause.

I'm very pro UCONN. very.

22
Any guesses as to the level of cuts (begging) that Schultz/Wazzu and OSU did? Down to a $15 million cut? $10 million? $5 million?

I can't see how Wazzu could afford halving their TV payout.

I also looked and Utah Athletics received $12 million dollars in subsidization from the academic side of the house in 2022.   Without it, they would have been $10 million in the red at current expense levels.

In general pac 12 finances are an absolute disaster. Doesn't Cal have debt in the 100's of millions?

If UO/UW/AZ/ASU leave, I can't imagine the remaining get a tv deal thats worth anything north of 8 million per. So I guess giving up 5 million of the current 20 to oregon washington is a better deal.

24
Rumors that OSU and WSU have agreed to give a share of their media deal to OR/WA if they stay. absolute insanity.

25
Sounds like Arizona is going to have to decide ....

The mistake here would be to assume that UofA is going to have a choice.  High probability that the ABOR will do whatever Crow (ASU) wants.  And what Crow wants is to build the world's largest JUCO within the academic halo of a conference affiliation with Stanford, and to a lesser extent, Cal.  He'd also like to kill college athletics (really).

yeah sounds like if ASU wants to stay, UA is gonna be forced to stay with them.

Absolutely brutal, if you're a UA fan you have to absolutely hate ASU right now.
