There probably is something dumber, but I can't think of anything.

Also, I don't blame Jake for sucking crap at running the football.  I blame whoever thinks he can run the football that keeps trying to make him run the football.  Jake can't help that he's turnover prone or that his legs and hands don't work very well when he tries to run with a football toward a line of scrimmage.  His coach simply thought he could make him not terrible at doing those things.

It's like handing War and Peace to a functionally illiterate invalid and putting him in front of the classroom for story time.  That would also be very dumb.

Kansas State Football / Story from this year's Big 12 Coaches meetings
« on: September 17, 2013, 05:16:33 PM »
Heard from a friend that was there that the following happened:

First, its almost a party atmosphere out in Phoenix during those days.  These coaches aren't the sworn enemies they sometimes make it seem.  Gundy and Stoops are drinking together and slapping ass, getting pretty lit up apparently.  Apparently out of the corner of the room, a guy that is visibly struggling to walk and wheezing walks in.  My friend said nobody even knew who it was, welcome new KU coach Chaz Weis.  Apparently, several of the conversations that night centered around how bad he looked and how much of an ass he was.

Here's the good part.  Apparently, there was a small line at the bar of 5-6 people waiting on drinks (think this social gathering included head coaches of many sports and AD's etc.).  Anyway, LHCBS walks in to the party and it was like the seas parted. All the coaches waiting in line for drinks moved aside and let Snyder go get his usual (single glass of wine as I understand it).  Snyder thanked them for their kindness, shook a few hands and headed out with his glass of wine (as we know he probably had to go back to his room and study the fake punt tendencies of his opponents in 3rd quarter situations when trailing by 10 points or more when its windy and over 75 degrees during games started after 3:00 PM CST)

My friend said it was one of the most incredible things he's seen.  To see all these other famous coaches act like stargazing kids was pretty telling.  The guy has mad respect of his peers in the league.

For those of you that didn't have the pleasure of living the Asbury/Wooldridge era firsthand where our university leadership raped our basketball program in front of our faces and the fan base indifferently enabled it, now you're going to get to see the real depths of mediocrity that our undeserving fan base will sink to.

So, crack open a Red Bull and enjoy the ride.  This is only the beginning...

Remember when....
1.    Huggs left the program and we were going to suck because we sold out to a coach who had never had a HC job beyond high school?  All hope was lost.  But then we became a consistent top 25 team and almost went to a Final Four.

2.    Remember when Frank left and we were going to suck even worse because we hired a fired coach from Illinois who absolutely bombed the opening press conference?  It was over.  But then we won the conference.

3.    Remember when Michael Beasley and Bill Walker left and we had no clue how we would score with just a spunky undersized shooting guard from IL?

Here's the point.  Programs are stronger than people.  Strong than any one coach.  Stronger than any one player.  Have some faith people.  This is not 1989.

Why we will be okay and crying over Angel is pointless
Angel was a three star player who was unranked, the same Angel who most of you are crying about leaving and how bad our basketball team will be without him. Without that unranked three star player our team will fall apart because the incoming unranked three star players are garbage.  Give oscar a chance with his guys, he made Angel a better player the Frank did and Angel wasn't even one of his players.

Angel was fine player and it would have been huge to have him but complaining about him leaving because we are not landing four and five star players is just ridiculous.  We have guys coming in that are getting better "rankings" than Angel did.  Wait two year before you start talking about the sky falling.

My wife and I had our Wildcat jackets on today. Almost had to corral her in the Walmart parking lot when a jayhawk clad fan walked by her and said out loud
"Rock Chalk". She was furious when we got to car. I mean spitting mad. Then we went over to Jason Deli for dinner. While we are minding our own business eating our meal the manager walks up and says "to bad about the game yesterday...I was rooting for you guys even though I'm a hawk fan." She had her spoon in her hand as she was eating some soup and when I saw the soup starting to boil I knew I better say something. Before I could she blurted out "don't feel sorry for us I kind of like being big 12 champs in both football and basketball..you should try it sometime. Feels real good! " I just said WOW...I love that woman! I guess that's why I can't root for those other guys. Their arrogance is on another level.

Ok folks, I have had a few days to stew over this, and I have tried to be very objective about it. But for the last 3 home games I attended (qualify, I missed UT because I was out of town on business) I have witnessed a very uncool event.

I am convinced something must be done about it. This is specifically referencing the "Cookies for Cats" handouts by the cheerleaders. 3 consecutive games in a row where I have had a big "WTF!" moment as I watch.... what I can only describe as child hating, no babysitting experience while in high school, poor decision making teen age cheer nazi's.... as they hand out cookies.

K State's official policy when it comes to "cookies for cats" handouts should be simple:

1)  Give the cookies to kids under the age of 12

2)  If there are no kids under 12 available, don't give any cookies away.

I have watched this happen 3 games in a row, cheer leader brings cookies to my section... there is a hoard of children(10-12 of them) between 4-10 years old waiting anxiously for the cookies at the bottom of the stairs in my section... cheer nazi gives 2-3 of the kids at the bottom a cookie... then starts walking up the section to hand out cookies to a bunch of adult (not students, most are old enough to know better) fans, waving their arms like idiots trying to draw attention to get a cookie. Leaving anywhere from 6-10 kids without a cookie. 3 games in a row I have had to watch young cat fans have their hearts broken by a cheer leader... and then fight back the tears as they walk back to their seats without a cookie. All the while watching a bunch of 40 years olds gobble up a delicious cookie right in front of them... might as well be flipping the kid off and tell him to "suck it!".

So I ask you: WTF! Especially those of you adults who are literally willing to take a cookie away from a child. "Stealing candy from a baby" doesn't bother you apparently. How can you sit there and eat a cookie when a little 5 year old cat fan is walking up the stairs with tears in his eyes? Do you have no heart? The lady behind my seats got one Saturday, I literally wanted to turn around, take her cookie, and hand it to the little kid crying in the aisle right next to us... warning all adults now... next time this happens, I am going to take your cookie and give it to the crying child if you don't step up and do it yourself.

But the really big WTF! Why on earth does KState support letting our cheerleaders make kids cry. This is a family environment... we want the little cat fans happy. Don't traumatize the little cat fans by denying them their god given right as a child to a free cookie.

Either give the cookies to the kids... or quit giving cookies out period.

Just spit ballin here.

Since we know we're all about a world class fan experience and revenue generation here at K-State, here's the plan.

New center hung scoreboard.  I'm thinking big and HD.  I'm also thinking ribbon boards where the highschool decal for our historical accomplishments currently resides.

Suites.  Very important for the vast amounts of K-State grads sitting on piles of dispensable cash.  Blow out the concourse and load it up.  Revenue.

And lastly, the white aisles gots to go.  Purple em up.

Oh, and better lighting and a more kick ass sound system and high density wi-fi.

Vanderbilt 58, South Carolina 51
Associated Press

COLUMBIA, S.C. -- Kyle Fuller scored 12 points and Dai-Jon Parker 11 as Vanderbilt held on down the stretch to defeat South Carolina 58-51 Saturday for its first Southeastern Conference victory of the season.

The Commodores (7-9, 1-3) led 45-35 with 8:35 to go after a free throw by Shelby Moats. South Carolina (11-6, 1-3) used a 14-6 run over the next six minutes to get within a basket at 51-49, but the Gamecocks got no closer.

Vanderbilt went 0-for-6 from the field in the last 6:27 but made seven foul shots down the stretch to keep in front. The Commodores' leading scorer coming in, Kedren Johnson, was held to three points, 12 fewer than his average, on 0-of-6 shooting.

Brenton Williams had 16 points to lead South Carolina. Williams missed a 3-pointer with 1:41 left that would've given the Gamecocks a lead when they trailed 51-49.

Rod Odom extended the Commodores' lead with a pair of foul shots moments later. Fuller made 1 of 2 from the line, as did Sheldon Jeter. Fuller added one more foul shot for a 56-49 lead with 36 seconds left.

After Brian Richardson scored the Gamecocks' final points on breakaway dunk, Johnson and Fuller each made one more foul shot to put the game away. Vanderbilt avoided its first four-game SEC losing streak since the 2008-09 season.

South Carolina tried to pack out the Colonial Life Arena as much for the football team as the basketball team. Gamecocks coach Steve Spurrier and his staff entertained several high school prospects the team hopes to sign next month.

Fans received posters commemorating what the school called the "Best Football Team in Gamecock History." South Carolina went 11-2 this past season, wrapping things up with a 33-28 victory over Michigan in the Outback Bowl.

Spurrier wore a bright red jacket at halftime as the fans stood and cheered. The head ball coach was flanked by several players, including star defensive end Jadeveon Clowney. "There are several future Gamecocks in the crowd tonight, and hopefully in the next few years we're going to have an SEC championship down here," he said.

Basketball coach Frank Martin did his part to fill the stands, inviting students to join the "Garnet Army" and promising food and T-shirts for those who came out. The student section was packed, filled with people in garnet-themed camo tees.

The Gamecocks could've used the football's team offensive success early on against Vanderbilt. After Williams' 3-pointer put them ahead 8-5 less than three minutes in, they went nearly 10 minutes without a basket.

South Carolina was 3 of 23 in the final 17 minutes of the half and ended it shooting 17.2 percent (5 of 29).

The Gamecocks' performance made Vanderbilt, which has been held to 33 points twice this season, appear an offensive juggernaut at 9 of 19 shooting (47.4 percent).

Still, Vanderbilt couldn't break away. The Commodores are one of the youngest teams in Division I, ranking 319th out of 347 in terms of experience, and their youth showed at times.

The Commodores committed 10 turnovers in the first 20 minutes. It was only after Fuller's driving layup and Jeter's basket in the last 90 seconds of the period that Vanderbilt built a 24-19 cushion.

These are not the players for his system and they haven't made it work to a high degree.

I don't love the Weber offensive philosophy but I believe he was the best coach we were going to get last season and an improvement over the Martin mess which was about to break.

Frank Martin did not want to spend his career coaching in Manhattan and his relationship with Currie was a symptom of that not the cause.

He needs basketball players to play his system. Only has a couple of "shooters" to work with now. His philosophy isn't based on "uglying" the game up like others...

But it's obvious these players are used to playing ugly basketball.

That's exactly how he won at Southern Illinois.

And isn't the coaches job to adapt to his personnel? It's too early to crucify Weber, but he has been doing a mediocre job so far.
Posted from Rivals Mobile

I would say after a coach has established his offensive and defensive philosophy, it is his job to tailor that a bit to his players.  The problem this season is if he plays "Frank Martin Basketball" he will never get his type players recruited here. This year is not the year we are going to win the Big Dance.  He is going to put in his system and then recruit players to fit it.  He will do his best to coach the current team in his system, but they were recruited to come here and play a different brand of basketball, so it isn't like we are going to be a top 10 team this year.  Bottom line today is his team won even though they don't have great shooters and often showed that they still have a lot of learning to do to execute properly.

Great post, tracer.

I got, appreciated, and enjoyed what FM wants to do in a basketball game. I believe it is a very high floor way and one that can work in a place where it's traditionally difficult to recruit.

That's not what Weber or most coaches are trying to do. It shows and we won't know the true direction of this program for a couple seasons.

I'm not a webber fan but this stuff is stupid it takes time for teams to gel. You really don't know much about any team until mid January or so much less a team with a new coach. Give the guy a fair chance he hasn't even had a bad loss here yet. Huggins, Martin, bill self I don't care what coach you are talking about they all have some sloppy performances early in the season. Yeah I know ku crushed cu today but they struggled in the game before this one it happens this time of the year and it doesn't mean anything. I think we'll know if webber can get it done or not by the of this year given the players he has on this team. People on both sides of the argument are dumb now those ripping him and those saying we don't have any players they are all idiots.

Agreed. It's too early to be judging HCBW.   Reply
It's obvious that FHCFM got more out of some players, but HCBW is getting more (or will) of others who prefer his coaching style. We're still figuring out this offense, and when we do, we'll hit the shots, but we've only lost to #4 in the country, and we have to play 2 more Top 10 teams in the next couple of weeks, so those are 2 more likely losses----but we didn't play that kind of murderers-row in non-conf the last few years, so it's hard to compare.  This year?  We might look pretty iffy, but we can't judge HCBW's success for another year or two, and THEN, it'll likely be on recruiting, not coaching.

quite Frankly losing Frank's players wouldn't have been that big of a deal and could have recruited  more of Weber type players had they left.  Still not convinced half of Frank's players on this team are really that great anyways, but it is what it is and coach Weber needs to get the most out of them.

Are you serious? How many games have you been too? There is considerable improvement, there is even actual in-game coaching going on...nothing like that happened under Frank...the kids dropped their heads and just walked to the bench. Go to a game...may be then you would understand, but then again, you would first have to understand basketball.

I went from being a Frank Martin fan to being ready for him to go. I mean how many 'F' bombs can one man drop in a season? And I'll admit I was not thrilled with the Weber hire. It doesn't mean I don't hope we win. Hell, I would gladly eat crow if BW elevates us to an Elite 8 or two or a Final Four over the next 6 or 7 years.  But what the heck is 'his kind of player'?  My guess would be it's a player recruited by Bill Self since those were the players he had the most success with at Illinois. It's easy to say BW's 'kind of player' is an overachieving kid who can shoot lights out. Guess what, great shooters (at least against big time defenses) don't grow on trees. It must not be higher star recruits since his team last year had as many top recruits as any classes he brought in to Champagne.  I think we have some talent, experience and depth on this years team.

We made the hire. I didn't like it. I hope I'm wrong. Go 'Cats!

it's folly to draw strong conclusions for a 7th year coach who has recruited his entire roster based upon Nov/Dec games - take that to the Nth power on a new coach asking guys to play a bit differently than they did up until this point.

i don't know that weber is going to prove a successful hire, i do know that there's a lot of overanalysis happening for this time in the season (using the word "analysis" VERY loosely).

Yes,the Currie bots don't have the capability to watch whats going on with this team. oscar Weber is not a good fit for our current players. He was also not a good fit for the players he recruited to Illinois either. oscar Weber got fired from Illinois for a reason last year. the attacks are probably based on the stupidity of making definitive and negative statements towards a team with 1 loss...

you want to stake your reputation on calling this an "absolutely awful hire" when a team is 7-1? despite having the two senior leaders with 3 years of frank martin's master teachings absolutely collapsing to the point of one shooting .19% on 3 pointers (worse than spradling last year!!! and spradling should have been sidelined last year with the injury instead of out there when he was slumping... so where should rod be???) and the other being out-played by every other big man on the roster???

i was not happy with the michigan game... i voiced that strongly on here.. but there is zero proof to even call this a bad hire at the moment... to call it "absolutely awful" is 100% pure stupidity on your part.... and frankly, any attack would be deserved.... the fact that you preemptively whined about really says a lot about your posting skills

I think they are definitely still thinking too much and not just " playing".  The few spots they've looked good in the 3 games I've seen are when they have played decent D, rebounded and got out into transition.  They move and cut better, they go hard to the O boards and actually seem confident when they are runnning.  When they have to walk it up - PAINFUL.
That isn't surprising, Frank's teams were awful at half court sets and they are still adjusting to Weber's system.

Against Michigan we shot horribly, got dominated on the glass, and played pathetic defense.

Look folks I'm not the coach, but once we solve this relatively easy equation we'll be fine.

Officially the first #1 team in BCS history to be defeated by a team with a losing record.

You just can't make that crap up.

And are chalking up the Conference Title and Fiesta Bowl as consolation.

Please stop doing that.

Man, can't wait to read them because I'm sure there are some amazing stories to be told!

Wish I could have been one of the 20,000 strong Cats fans that invaded the Alamo, but this will be the next best thing.
