Shawnee County Country Club recently joined Great Life.  Not a bad course at all imho. I played it a few weeks ago. However, it is in the hood of Topeka.  It is right across the street from The High Crest neighborhood.

In other news I'll be playing the old Abilene Country Club on Thursday.  Plan to get beat pretty badly by WW.

Warning:  The following review is full of snarky and judgmental opinions.  The statements and comments made by KTP do reflect his views and all complaints should be forwarded to [email protected].  Thank you and enjoy.

Today was a day like no other.  On this blistering spring day, I decided that I wanted to go out to eat my lunch.  I needed something quick, but wasn’t in the mood for fast food.  I couldn’t really decide exactly what I wanted and I was becoming frustrated.  And then it hit me, Sirloin Stockade.   It seems simple enough right, it’s quick, cheap and I could eat until my heart clogged with chicken fat. How could this be the wrong decision.  Well trust me folks, it wasn’t the wrong decision.  So much was good about Sirloin Stockade, or Dinner & A Show, as I call it.

I’ll start with the food.  It was exactly what you would expect.  Terrible, and I was okay with that.  Okay, enough about the food, it is time to move on to the good stuff.

Sirloin Stockade at 12:37 on a Monday in June is a petri dish of human experimentation. I found that there were several categories of people, and within those categories, several sub categories. I don’t have time to go though each one, but I’ll do my best to hit the important groups.

First we have the elderly.  The group was by far the best represented when it comes to numbers. As my eyes darted from table to table I was constantly berated by short white hair, and canes.  I’m not complaining, this group was nice and easy to maneuver around.  For instance, at one point a little old lady and I locked eyes when there was only one savory butter roll left.  It was clear what we both wanted, but only one of us had the speed and agility to obtain our goal.  That roll was damn delicious.  The interesting part about the grey group, is that they weren’t in small sub groups.  Instead, they sat at tables of 6 or more.  Very rarely did you find a few loaners.  This and the lack of Buicks in the parking lot lead me to believe that it might have been a retirement home retreat.

The next category is that of the blue collar worker.  These are good Americans.  Joe the Plumber types.  The guys and gals are working hard, and doing a damn good job.  The shouldn’t be made fun of, so I simply won’t do it.  They sat at their tables, dripping sweat and enjoying their fish filets.  This group was very easy to identify because at each table, at least one person had a cut off t-shirt sleeve tied around their head.

The next group that caught my eyes were the waitresses.  These forty somethings hated me from the moment I choose to eat at the Stockade.  They walked though the restaurant cleaning up spilled mac & cheese and  counting the moments until they could climb into their cars and go home and see their families.  My server came up to me with dead eyes and a sad soul and kindly refilled my ice water.  I left her $4 because I think she had a kind heart and was the kind of person who wouldn’t spit in my drink when I wasn’t looking.

I’ve saved the best for last.  Seriously guys, it’s about to go down as hard as if Ke$ha and Pitbull were running this.  The last group was without a doubt my favorite.  This group was very easy to identify.  This group is the kind of people who believe shopping for lingerie anywhere but Walmart is a waste.  This group believes that children don’t need to brush their baby teeth, because they’re just going to lose them anyway.  I’m talking about 2 year olds running around The Kade in nothing but a diaper.  I’m talking about a child who is 3+ screaming and throwing himself on the floor because he wanted more ice cream. And instead of his mom doing anything, she simply walked away and left him for the wait staff to tend to   Most of these people did not seem in a hurry to get back to their jobs.  They enjoyed their lunch at a leisurely rate.  And piled their plates so full, I almost wondered if they realized that they could return to fill a new plate as many times as they wish.  These are my heroes.  I want to live this life.

In conclusion, I don’t know if I’ll ever go anywhere else to eat in MHK on a Monday for lunch. I can’t think of anyway possible to top that experience.  Have a great day.

Forgot to take a picture before I started pulling.  But here is a shot of the half I froze.

Just did a seven hour check in and now I'm hungry.  Seems to be building a great bark.  I just loaded the smoker up with wood and numm I'm off to wildcat creek to get in 9 holes.  I'm pretty sure today is a good day.

I threw an 8 pound butt on at 4 this morning.  Can't wait to dig in tonight.

After I got the smoker running correctly I lit a fire in the fire pit and fell asleep on the patio In a big comfy chair.  I just woke to the storms rolling into mhk.  I think this is gonna be a good day.

56
So i apologize for the screen shot of my snap chat feed, but I forgot to take another photo.  And by the time i remembered, it was all gone. But for new years eve i made 2lbs of smoked candied bacon.

pissclams - Thanks for the help.  My two butts turned out very good, and finished exactly when I wanted them to.

Only problem with the smoke is that my brother in-law (his party) got the count wrong.  He told me he expected 25 people, & only 11 showed up.  Turns out he hadn't even invited 25 people.  Either way, the food was good, and I sent home bags with each group.

I've had the HTC M8 for a little over a week now, and it is awesome. I had a HTC One X (initial generation) prior, so it was a significant upgrade in computing power.

The load times are 1/4 as much as they were before if not less...this is both the loading of saved materials (apps) and when DL'ing stuff.

Screen is VERY reactive, I believe it 'set the record' for quickest reaction time of any touch screen device, there is no delay whatsoever

The only issue I have is the most complained about issue, & that is there is a 1/4" black bezel on the bottom of the phone that is visibly nothing other than the HTC logo, so it makes one handed use of reaching the top the screen 1/4" harder...HTC has stated that area is needed internally for hardware, so it was unavoidable.

I'd recommend it though, and I really expected to move to the GS5, but when I used them both side by side @ AT&T store, the S5 didn't stack up in areas referenced above

 :Wha:

I like you also had the One X.  I was pretty pleased with the phone, but had decided to give the GS5 a chance because I kept hearing how great it was.  While at the AT&T store I had a 2 hour wait to upgrade.  During that time I played with the M8 during that time and absolutely loved it.  Also, HTC fixed my main issue with the One X, and now allows expandable memory.  I believe you can go up to 192GB's on this phone.  I decided to go with the M8.  I got the phone on Sunday and am extremely happy with my decision.

  • The phone is extremely responsive and the screen is very bright and looks fantastic.
  • I like the metal chassis and overall look of the phone.
  • I thought that I wouldn't care about the speakers being on the front, but after trying out the speaker phone it just makes a lot sense.  Additionally, the speakers are really loud, and still have great sound quality
I would recommend that anyone looking to purchase a new phone at least checks this one out.

ya you're good to go.  will take more fuel than normal to maintain temp but they'll cook the same as if you had one on there.
if they were jammed together on the smoker it might take a bit longer than normal but they won't be so no issue.

I didn't even think about needed more fuel.  Thanks for the tip!

60
do you have room to keep them separated within the smoker?  if so, it's still 1.5 hr / pound.

Yeah, they'll be on separate racks with one directly below the other.

61
This weekend I'm going to cook 2 11# butts.  I've never ran my smoker with two butts at once.  I have a vertical water smoker.  I'm wondering if the two butts together will take longer to cook than one by itself.  Or should I still plan on 1 1/2 hr/pound?  TIA

Anyone eaten at Hibachi Hut lately? I'm curious how they're doing. Doesn't seem like anyone is ever in there.

I was never much of a fan of Hibachi Hut when it was located in Aggieville.  But since they've moved I've really become a fan.  I've been there several times & have always left happy.  No matter what you do, try the tiger sauce that sits on the table.

You can buy that at Hyvee fwiw

Thanks!  I've got a bottle in my fridge that was gifted to me by a friend.  I wasn't sure where to get it at.

what's in those spuds, son

Those are created by my wife.  I'm not sure of everything in them.  I know it's cheese, sour cream, and cream of chicken soup.  Basically, they are the healthiest thing a person can eat.

are they made with frozen hash brown potatoes?

Yup....quick and easy

Smoking my first beer can chicken today  :excited:

This is also the first time I'm smoking at our new house.   My wife and I took possession of our first home on the 16th.  I'm embarrassed that it took me 1/2 a month to smoke something.  Hopefully this chicken will be worth the wait.

Here are the pre cook pics.  Enjoy & I'll update later with more pictures

The setup

All rubbed down and going in the smoker

Smoke baby smoke

I didn't get a great picture, but you get the idea.

:sdeek:

clean the smoker?

i guess to each his own but why would you want to remove all that seasoning that you worked so hard on

I just worry that all of that crap in there can't be good for the food.  Plus I thought I read you should clean it about one a year.  Do you not clean yours ever?

71
Just pulled the butt off of the smoker.  This is my first time really letting the smoker go unattended.  I didn't set any alarms or use my thermometer until I was ready to take it off of the smoker.  I smoked it to feel and then checked with the Maverick.  Looks to have a real nice bark on it.  I'll post pictures after I pull it.  In total it was on the smoker at 215 degrees for 11 hours.  When I pulled the butt it was at 205 degrees.

72
Embarking on a little overnight smoke.  This 8-9 # butt went on at just after 9pm.  It'll run all night long.  I'll pull it off the smoker sometime tomorrow morning and stuff it in a cooler for an hour or two.  If it turns out to be worth the weight of the meat, I'll post some pulled pics here.

Also, looking at this picture it might just be time to clean my smoker.  YUCK

I can report that the Dancing Geisha was pretty good.  Average meal runs from $12 - $16.  I had a chicken korma ant it was really good.  It came with a dish of rice.  When I first saw the food, I thought I was going to leave hungry, but by the end of the meal I realized I shouldn't have finished it all.  My one complaint regarding the food is that it felt like a pretty limited menu to me.  I'm not familiar with Indian food, so maybe that is the norm.

Now the wait staff was running around kinda clueless, but it was the first night.  They were very nice, but it seemed like maybe they hired people who have never been servers before.  The messed up my ticket with someone else's and had some prices on the ticket, different than the menu listed price.  So make sure you check your ticket to ensure that this was a 1 time accident.

I was also warned about how spicy the food would be.  When I ordered a beer ($2 Shiner Bock) the waitress told me I would defiantly need a water with my meal because of the spice.  I can report that I did not need a water.  I would have taken my food quite a bit hotter.  They talked me out of the hot and into the medium.  I would say if you're a person who enjoys spicy food, don't let them sway you like they did me.

Other than Shiner I thought the drinks were a bit expensive.  They run $7 for a tall very skinny glass.  I ordered an Indian spin on a bloody mary.  It did not disappoint.  I didn't really taste any liquor in the drink, but the spices they used it might have been masking the vodka.

Overall I really thought it was a neat place.  I'm sure when things get running normal and the wait staff calms down a bit, it will be a neat restaurant.

Here is the menu.  I got these pictures from their fb.

Put the 7lb butt on around midnight, 9 lb brisket around 1am. Cooked around 240 all night, and avoided the rain. Brisket finished around 10...and had to put the butt in the oven to get to 195 by 11:30. A little rusty, but will take.

I have no problem eating leftovers.  Just saying.

So I shouldn't feel like I got gypped if I pay for two of the issues and the buyer pays for two, and we end up paying about the same?

hey stevesie-

did you guys buy a house or something? exciting if so. where at?

In the process. Closing date is in August since it's being rented out now and we're currently renting. It's a couple blocks down from the Northview pool. So guess who will be going down a bunch of bad ass slides all day every summer day for the foreseeable future? That's right, Stevesie60.

I just purchased a house in the one of the Dix additions.  I don't move in until mid July though.  Looks like we'll be pretty close.  Are you impacted by the new flood maps in Manhattan?  We were lucky and found a home that is not.
