“We expect to win every game, and I mean that literally. We have big plans,” Ertz said before his big opening night. “And we’ve been working hard and we think we’ve got the pieces to do it. Not setting any limitations on what we can do.”

Further confirmation Jesse Ertz is, in fact, a badass.

OFFENSE
Our offense is explosive! The first half was pretty frustrating and I would be mumbling about how the offense was looking a little stalled after a penalty or Barnes getting stuffed, and then we would make a play.  Harris caught a ball in stride, spun, turned up field and separated from his defender was the kind of play we have been missing from receivers. It was the kind of skill that Lockett or Chris Harper would bring to the table. I like Zuber, he is competent and capable of making a big play, and he is clearly #3. Pringle and Harris are going to be monsters.

For the first game, we seemed willing to let Ertz operate and he clearly has a good rapport and trust with the receivers. 10/16 for 333 and 4 TD is pretty incredible and makes me think that maybe YPC is back as a core metric for the offense. We certainly went after 1 on 1 coverage very aggressively and several incompletions were overthrows on deep balls vs. 1-on-1 coverage.

Offensive line looked good in pass pro, running lanes against an FCS team were not as clean as you would like, but they were putting a lot of pressure and extra guys in the box and that was reflected in the passing game where we took advantage.

Not sure what to make of the running game. Ertz had a couple nice runs but Barnes was largely held in check and we were making so many big plays in the passing game it didn't seem to matter.

DEFENSE
The corners looked good, even in the first half, they kept things in front of them. Obviously DJamer Reed is a playmaker all over the field, but Shelley was solid. Safeties were solid tacklers and outside of the collision on the INT, and a couple breakdowns in the first half on coverage the secondary played well.

Linebackers I think we will get better as the season goes on (maybe when the #2's start) but we looked slow against the option and Snyder will hopefully be able to get that corrected. It might not even matter as much anyway as almost every QB in the Big 12 is running more air raid style than spread option.

I thought the line played well getting pressure and they almost completely disrupted the inside running game.

SPECIAL TEAMS
Sean Snyder coaches an elite, top 3 special teams in the country for like the 4th year running? Facts is facts. DJamer Reed is amazing and we already know Pringle is explosive so our return game is going to be a huge factor throughout the year.

FG kicking was solid as any time you go 1-2 from 50+ at the college level you accept it. No worries there.

NO PUNTS!

A recent survey by the Pew Research Center found a sizable shift in the views of American Muslims when it comes to homosexuality and found them to be more accepting of it than white evangelicals.

In a survey conducted between January and May, 52 percent of U.S. Muslims said homosexuality should be accepted by society — an increase of 25 percentage since 2007. Comparatively, only 34 percent of white evangelical Protestants said they believed homosexuality should be accepted, the smallest percentage of any group surveyed.

I had a cracked screen on my iphone 6 for a few months. A piece broke off near the button, so I took it to the Aggieville repair shop for a new screen. Got it back, working great, then all of a sudden the screen has some bars on it (like old school tv but narrower) and then goes black.

Try to turn back on, nothing. Hard reset, nothing. Restore with my macbook, nothing.

I am going to take it back to the shop tomorrow. How screwed am I?

KU is completely loaded with talent. The best backcourt in the country. The best player in the country. The best freshman in the country, who is an NBA lottery pick. An experienced big. The best coach in America. Winning culture (13 straight). Kansas City Sprint Center.

Clutch.
Tough.
Bracket completely set up for final four run.

It is all there and I just can't see any other team challenging them.

With K-State basketball locked in perpetual "meh" mode, I am ROCK CHALK HAWKING along with my

“Just like Jesus said, ‘The poor will always be with us,’” he said. “There is a group of people that just don’t want health care and aren’t going to take care of themselves.”

Pressed on that point, Marshall shrugged.

“Just, like, homeless people. … I think just morally, spiritually, socially, [some people] just don’t want health care,” he said. “The Medicaid population, which is [on] a free credit card, as a group, do probably the least preventive medicine and taking care of themselves and eating healthy and exercising. And I’m not judging, I’m just saying socially that’s where they are. So there’s a group of people that even with unlimited access to health care are only going to use the emergency room when their arm is chopped off or when their pneumonia is so bad they get brought [into] the ER.”

Essentially Flyertalk / Line of succession thread
« on: December 05, 2016, 03:15:33 PM »
As many of you know, I am the first born son of a second son, but I have risen above my station in life through clever maneuvering and a strategic and prosperous alliance with my wife.

Having sired three boys and with the oldest now readying for his proper schooling and having survived the ravages of his first 3 winters, my thoughts turn to the future.  While my seed has been strong enough to all but guarantee my name will survive, to strengthen and consolidate my family's power, I will need to ensure that no mistakes or stupidity on the part of my progeny spoils our good name.

For those who have not yet produced an heir, what are you doing today to ensure that you pass on your kingdom to your flesh and blood?

A few other questions:

1) what is your line of succession looking like?  any potential rivals within your family?
2) what are your plans for your second sons?  military service?  eyes on the papacy?
3) how have you marginalized any bastards or potential claimants from relatives that threaten your claim?
4) what will you look for when finding a match for your heir?  (strong house, wealth, wit?)

Kansas State Football / It was fun to beat Baylor
« on: November 19, 2016, 09:06:24 PM »
Kansas State Athletics offer few true moments of happiness any more for me.  There has been too much pain, disappointment, anger and betrayal for me to ever love as truly, madly, deeply as I did back when that melodic phrase had currency with my female peers.  All of the memories are just as fuzzy, analog and dated as the YouTubes ripped from VHS.  The players were larger than life, not just because they were NFL talents, but also because I, we, were more invested.  The state of 21st century NCAA athletics has laid bare more and more of the things that we put out of sight, out of mind during the 90's and 2000's.

Cynicism and skepticism has overwhelmed the fan experience.  Not just the true scandals of criminality that have humbled some of the most revered names in college football, which have horrified everyone except the fan bases willing to excuse rapists and their protectors, but also the institutional rot that allowed regional conferences to be broken up in favor of a collection of television markets.  Capitalism has become such a central force behind college athletics, that every interaction feels transactional.

My disgust with John Currie's K-State Athletics, Inc. is both specific and contextual.  He is the perfect example of what we have sowed.  He is the perfect reflection of what the modern athletic department.  The "fans" are really just consumers and "games" are really just "opportunities for branding."  "Coaches" are "brand ambassadors" and though student-athletes are not officially recognized as labor, they are disposable.  Traditions are rough ridin' tagline, not an organic point of pride.  And wins, are only useful inasmuch as they feed the machine.

I take no pleasure in typing these thoughts.  It has been a long miserable march toward the current state of things.  I am actually ok with this new stage and have accepted it.

Today, I even felt some hope.  We beat the bad guys.

My son knows the fight song, he cheers for the team, he smiled a genuine smile when he found out we won after his nap.  He emptied a bag of clementines into the fridge crisper by dunking them over his little brother and saying he was practicing for the Wildcat Slam Jam.

He also believes Jesus was crucified on a "plus sign."

I too will indulge myself some magical thinking and embrace the mythology of LHC Bill Snyder for a last go round.  If the propagandists can't fill your heart with love, create your own and embrace it on your own terms.

Because the machine will carry on.
