Essentially Flyertalk / Re: 2nd worst town in Kansas
« on: December 20, 2012, 02:20:04 PM »
Colwich also has a failed lumber yard.  The owner has been trying to sell the property for about a decade.  Has been reduced to trying to rent.  No takers so far.  Have you ever smelled fermented milo.  It is flavo-ass with a tangy twist.

I got really PAK'd in Colwich once. Not sure how that adds to the discussion  :dunno:

Colwich does have a liquor store and a bar.

Colwich now has TWO bars. In celebration, a small group of friends did a pub crawl there last Christmas.

The town has plenty of drawbacks, sure:

Super religious anti-abortion signs in every field
Crazy guitar lady at church
Lady who thinks there is an angel living in her barn
Sign at city limit that states "Home of Joel Weber, Speedboat Champion" or something
Priest forbid alcohol during receptions held in church assembly hall (This ban may have since been overturned.)
Ethanol plant

But it has pros:

Gambino's Pizza
Two bars, both serving food
Liquor store
Gas station that had the arcade version of Double Dragon for like 3 months in 1987
Small grocery store sells meat from Goddard locker
Elite Co-op
5 minutes from new hospital, 10 minutes from West Wichita

Colwich does not belong in this discussion. If you want a candidate for worst town in Western Sedgwick County, go with Garden Plain.

Now I just want to see photoshops of city limit signs and post cards with awkwardly true assessments of the nominated town.

There is a sign on I-70 that says "WaKeeney: It's Affordable". Always struck me as a pretty sad boast.

The map of county health rankings on page 13 of this pdf from the Kansas Health Institute shows how horrible things are in SE KS.
http://media.khi.org/news/documents/2009/09/03/KansasCountyHealthRankings2009.pdf

I had to spend a few days in Girard (county seat of Crawford County, west of Pittsburg) for work, so that wins my vote. Pittsburg and Parsons are charming in comparison.

I assume life in Fort Scott is terrible, based on driving through. Same with Ottawa.

Kansas State Football / Bill Burr slams TCU, Alabama tucks
« on: November 09, 2012, 11:30:03 AM »
On this week’s podcast, Bill Burr talked about attending the Alabama/LSU game:

Quote
I didn’t like the way the Alabama fans dressed. It reminded me of TCU, “C’mon Frogs!” Where they do that crap where they all dress like these junior banker date rapists. They go to a football game, right? They wear Dockers, boat shoes, and then they have like a rough ridin' polo shirt that they tuck in. I swear to God, it’s like, “Are you serious right now? You’re from Alabama! Who are you kidding?” I can see if you took off your Alabama crap and you went to someplace else and tried to pull it off, but eventually people are gonna know that you’re from Alabama. And don’t even eff with me. I’ve been to Alabama - the “civilized” parts. I didn’t go down to Macon or Mobile or all that rough ridin' crap where... I don’t even think they know Martin Luther King’s dead yet. They’re probably still having rough ridin' meetings...”We gotta get ‘em! Why you think they took over the NBA?! He’s gotta be somewhere! He’s like Elvis - he ain’t dead yet!”

'03 loss is mentioned in the Fiesta Bowl article but the '97 domination of Donovan McNabb is not  :shakesfist:

I have an RSS feed for Weinreb's articles. He's one of the few Grantland authors who write intelligibly on college football.

not my favorite for obvious reasons, but i will say that '08 was as good as a loss like that can feel because it assured me that prince was gone.

I like to think that the FIRE PRINCE paper bag I wore in the second half forced the administration's hand. (see profile avatar)

Also, could you gross reporters please keep your crickets, body lice, etc. away from our beloved coach?

Snyder had his postgame face on. Even when a cricket jumped from a TV reporter's forearm to Snyder's left cheek, the Wildcats coach simply flicked the bug away with a bored nonchalance.

Is there video of this? Can somebody make a "brush your shoulders off" -type .gif from it right away, please? TIA.

oscar Weber and our Wildcats scored over 100 points, but needed overtime to beat UNC Asheville and advance to the Sweet Sixteen.

My subconscious sucks at Bracketology.

“He is one guy I noticed."

To be fair, this is probably the most flattering thing I could say about Shane, too.
