Bielema said that because he does not have a family, he hired coaches at Wisconsin who could fill that void; many of his assistants have three or four children. Bielema says he tries not to keep his coaches chained to their offices. He recalled staring at the walls while working for LHC Bill Snyder at Kansas State because he felt as if he had to be in his office, even with nothing to do. Bielema said he opened up many practices and meals to his coaches’ families.

“I was looking to surround myself with good family guys because I didn’t have one, and I wanted to breed that culture,” he said. “That’s what makes my situation work. I can live vicariously through them.”

Kansas State Football / It's Patterson!

Congrats to former* K-State head coach Gary Patterson and his TCU team for their Rose Bowl win.  Gary, it may have sucked the way things went down with K-State a couple of years ago, with Snyder butting in and all when you were set to come home, but at least you now have a bigger win on your resume than Snyder has or will ever have, and you didn't have to put up with his shadow over you to accomplish it.

Kansas State Football / On this championship weekend...
« on: December 04, 2010, 05:14:36 PM »
...I find myself wondering if anything will ever ease the pain of what happened 12 years ago.  2003 helped, but still.  The only thing that maintained sanity at the time was the thought that K-State had arrived and was going to be in the hunt year-in and year-out.  Now that that's clearly not been the case for the better part of a decade, the memories seem all the more painful.

Have to wonder if that also doesn't contribute toward the negativity regarding OB's effort the last couple of years.  Kind of tough to accept that we blew what may be our only shot at a national championship. Maybe Patterson wouldn't have done it at K-State, but watching TCU at #3 and in the hunt that we used to be in doesn't help.

This one was on us, fellas.   :frown:    Let's step up our game here.  Every opponent deserves our respect.

Also, I'm sure Frank's 4-hour practice this afternoon didn't help.  Good thing we have to travel to KC on Monday so he can't wear the guys down right before the game again.

Kansas University Sucks At Negotiating Contracts

Quote
Kansas University's abysmal 2-5 start to the 2010 season has been bad enough that many fans are already giving up on first-year head coach Turner Gill.
However, even if Kansas's athletic department wanted to get rid of Gill, they've tied their own hands in a way that makes it nearly impossible.
Gill's five-year, $10 million contract does not have a buyout clause, meaning that if the Jayhawks really wanted to remove their coach, they'd have to come up with $8 million, the remainder of Gill's salary, within 90 days. That's a lofty sum on its own, but considering Gill's assistants make another $2 million annually, Kansas won't be in a hurry to make a change.

...Oklahoma State is the 3rd best offense in yards/game and points/game in the country, as opposed to Baylor at #5 and #20.

Should be a solid 2 weeks of meltdowning. Then we've got Mizzou a couple of weeks later, who look like their running game is custom made to break all sorts of records against us, and who also probably have the best defense we'll have seen.

If K-State somehow finds a way to beat Texas, Colorado, and North Texas, this is going to be the strangest 8-4 ever.

*  There were 3 or 4 K-Staters sitting in the La-Z-Boy Endzone Extravaganza dancing all over the place every time we scored. Pretty funny to see the KU chumps in that section have to endure that. Also funny that they have to listen to the visiting band and fans all game long.

*  KU's first-half "highlights" on the video board after halftime consisted of about 4 or 5 4-yard-gains that they showed from 2-3 angles each.

*  After the fumble return for a TD, with 7.5 minutes left in the 3Q, Tracz initially held up the "Happy Trails" sheet to the band. Then, just as they were getting ready to play it, he waved it off. Guess he thought Snyder would be pissed.

* Did not hear "wait until basketball" one time, except from K-State fans.

Baylor coach Scott Drew and the Bears men’s basketball program are being investigated by the NCAA for their involvement in the recruitment of a high school player from Colombia, sources have told FOXSports.com.

Attorney Jim Darnell, who also represented former USC and current UTEP coach Tim Floyd in dealings with the NCAA, confirmed to FOXSports.com he was hired by Drew in September.

FOXSports.com has also confirmed through sources that the NCAA is expected to be in Waco later this month to interview Drew and members of the Bears coaching staff. NCAA representatives did not respond to requests for comment.

This is what Ron Prince finished in his last year at K-State, with 2 conference wins.

Will we surpass this record this year? Based on what we saw tonight, KU and North Texas appear to be our most winnable games remaining, and they're both on the road. OSU, Baylor, Mizzou, and Texas have the offensive ability to do at least what Nebraska did to us. Maybe we can win out at Colorado?

Calming the waters, indeed.

Kansas State Football / Question for Vegas experts
« on: October 05, 2010, 01:52:27 PM »
Seeing the spread at 12 and O/U at 52.  Can one break this down to an expected score of 32-20?  Because this would surprise me.  When I saw the spread at 12, I figured they must expect Nebraska to win something like a 18-6 ballgame, where we just don't do anything at all on offense.

With 2 running teams, and Snyder's penchant for milking the clock, that just seems to be a big O/U.

Dear Wildcat Nation

October 3, 2010

By Mark Janssen

K-Staters, please allow me to take a timeout from the day-to-day routine of profiling the Wildcats to ask a favor.

It's time to get behind No. 14 and eliminate the shabby comments about the Wildcat quarterback that have been littering LHC Bill Snyder Family Stadium.

If Carson Coffman can't hear the gibberish, his family can.

Chuckling at this past week's press conference, Coffman related, "I think it was the Missouri State game that someone was mouthing off about me, and my brother turned around and confronted him. I thought it was pretty funny. I believe in myself, and my family believes in me, and that's all that matters."

And, his teammates believe in him, starting with the Wildcats that matter most to a quarterback.

"We are solidly behind him," said center Wade Weibert. "He steps into the huddle and has a command about him."

Guard Zach Kendall added, "We're best friends off the field, and on the field we have a total belief in Carson. He has us 4-0 ... what more do you want?"

Nope, CC likely won't be a First Team All-Big 12 quarterback and be invited to New York for the 2011 NFL Draft.

But the fact is, Kansas State is exactly where every Wildcat fan wants them to be, which is 4-0. Not necessarily in play, but the record is a perfect 4-0, which is what matters most. Going into the weekend, only 23 other D-I teams could make such an undefeated claim.

And while his play has not been pristine, Carson Coffman has been instrumental in that 4-0 record.

? It was Mr. Coffman who orchestrated an eight-play, 80-yard drive with 2:03 left in the game to give the Cats an eight-point cushion on UCLA.

? It was Mr. Coffman who directed two final-period drives against Iowa State with one of those being a nine-play, 83-yard march for the go-ahead points in a seven-point win.

? And, it was Mr. Coffman who directed a 13-play, 67-yard drive, which included his own 7-yard run to cap the march at the 24-second mark in K-State's 17-13 win over Central Florida.

On that one play that had Daniel Thomas as a first option on a shovel pass and Tramaine Thompson as the second pick on a screen pass, it was Coffman who displayed the maturity and the savvy and the guts to make the play himself.

"Big players make big plays in big situations, and that's what he did," said Thompson.

But afterward, Coffman deflected the credit to his coach for making a big-time call.

"I just did what I'm coached by Coach (Del) Miller to do."

It was yet another demonstration of class by Carson Coffman.

Just for fun, here are the two "senior" college quarterbacks picked to go in the first couple rounds of the 2011 NFL Draft:

? Jake Locker, Washington - 51-percent completion rate, six touchdowns, two interceptions, and a 127.30 quarterback rating.

? Christian Ponder, Florida State - 61-percent completion rate, seven touchdowns, three interceptions and a 131.55 quarterback rating.

Carson Coffman, you wonder?

The Wildcat senior has completed 61-percent of his passes with five touchdowns, two interceptions and a 159.8 quarterback rating, which is second in the Big 12.

No, not second in being flashiest, but in efficiency.

Oh, Ponder's team is 3-1, and Locker's team is 1-2, while Coffman's team is ... 4-0.

It's quickly become apparent that the Big 12 this season is not super loaded as only two teams - No. 6 Nebraska and No. 8 Oklahoma - are ranked in the Top 20.

The Big 12 North appears to be a three-team chase with each of those entries demonstrating glitches in their play. At home, Nebraska defeated South Dakota State, 17-3; at home, Missouri defeated San Diego State, 27-24.

Nope, the Coffman name won't be in the conversation with the lads named Dickey, Bishop and Roberson 15 years down the trail. But the fact is old No. 14 has K-State right where you want them one-third of the way into the season ... a perfect 4-0.

In part, that's due to the play of Carson Coffman.

He is K-State's quarterback. He is the best quarterback in the 2010 Wildcat camp. And, he is "your" quarterback.

Thursday night when the Big Red comes visiting, everyone clad in purple and white needs to be pulling in the same direction, which includes "for" Carson Coffman.

If not, Coffman has the moxie to be okay with it.

"I really don't care what they think of my performance. I'm really just playing for the guys on the team, and the coaches, and my family, and God. And that's enough for me."

And for me, and should be for you.

I wonder if the Coffman brother who turned around and confronted the fan was Chase or Cameron.
