Compliance Matters
We remind you again that with high visibility and excitement comes potential vulnerability and pitfalls. Please remember to call or email our compliance staff anytime you have NCAA related questions. Remember that it is generally not permissible for staff members and fans to send gifts, buy meals or drinks, though small and well-intentioned, for our student-athletes or their families. Let's all be vigilant and "ask before we act" to avoid accidently endangering a student-athlete's eligibility.
Out of 30,000 people at this school, there's got to be somebody that can kick the ball off out of the end zone," Weis said. "Maybe it's one of the guys we currently have. We'll have to see. Whoever that person is, where ever they are, we're going to find them."
Ron Doherty is slated to handle punting and kicking duties for the Jayhawks, and he might have the most job security of anybody in camp, Weis said.
Weis wants to avoid wearing out Doherty's leg, though, so he's auditioning candidates to handle kickoff duties. He's also willing to get creative in his search for the strongest leg.
"I'm working every angle I can to try to find that answer," Weis said. "We're talking to the rugby club, we're talking to the soccer club, the guys that practice against the women."
Weis has his limits, though, which would include recruiting someone from KU's women's soccer team.
"I don't think I'd tread that water," he said.
The good news: Touchbacks will be easier to achieve this season, with kickoffs moving up to the 35-yard line.
