The New Joe Montgomery Birther Pit / Re: The Biden (interim) Dictator

And/or we classify too much damn stuff.  We don't yet know any particulars of what was on Joe's reading shelf next to his garage barcalounger; but given that the IC didn't care enough and lost track of it and that Archives apparently DNGAF about VP transition in order to catalog anything; likelihood is high that it wasn't overly sensitive and likely more speculative in nature than conclusive.  Saw somewhere in all of this that Biden preferred his material on iPad.  But given those weren't introduced until a year and a half into the Obama admin, and likely not considered "secure" until several years later, there's still a lot of paper briefings he would have been able to toss into a drawer if they weren't immediately recollected following a brief.

That video - so well done.

Go do it MIR - It's certainly a unique place.  Incredibly steep inside.  Although the last time I was there - about 4 years ago for a graduation - it was getting dingy and in need of freshening up inside.

I don't like it.  The proper thing to do would be to dismiss him in a private office meeting if that was the last move.  I don't see how humiliating him in front of 100 of his peers will make him trust the "family" or future family or anyone for that matter.  Great for TV, though.  It got us talking about it.

Plus the split vote of the team.  Besides what you said, you only vote - put the team on the spot like that - if you know the outcome is going to be completely one sided, nearly unanimous.  There's about twenty or thirty guys who left that room wondering if they just got their first "strike"

I think one thing the N(ew)XFL got really right was kickoffs: Kick from the 30, return team on the 35, nobody moves but the kicker until the ball is fielded.  Punts and PATs a little less so - should keep the kicking option in PATs.

Perhaps a way to keep a traditional kicking PAT would be to award an additional point or two on top of the PAT if the *kickoff* goes through the uprights.  Would certainly reduce returns and increase touchbacks.

Bourbon is great, especially if you've never been to NOLA. There's such a variety of different types of bars and restaurants. It's a very cool scene. When we all come back, y'all who aren't going with 15 rough ridin' kids, don't be ashamed to tell us about your tales from Bourbon and how much fun you had. Do the touristy crap, that's the point. Have a hurricane, have two hand grenades and get them in the plastic cups that look like hand grenades. Go to the Cat's Meow, my favorite bar in the world, and sing some karaoke. Go to one of the cheap walk up restaurants and eat some gator. If it's your thing, go to one of the seeming 10 hustler's strip clubs. Stop in to Krystal late night for a bag of knockoff White Castles, but more importantly for the fuckery that happens. Definitely go up past Bourbon and St. Ann and see a drag show. Do pop into the House of Voodoo.

Don't worry about being a tourist, your in rough ridin' New Orleans, watching your team in the rough ridin' sugar bowl, on rough ridin' new years eve. If you can't enjoy being a sloppy, fun loving, yankee tourist under these circumstances, when can you ever enjoy excess. Live it up gents. Leave the off the beaten path stuff for those of us who can't have a blast on Bourbon, or leave it for the next trip, or the trip after.

The next time I'm in NOLA, for a work convention in '24, I'll definitely be back to my hotel, the Crowne Plaza, right on the corner of Bourbon and Canal, ready for fuckery of my own. Last time I was there I had two, very pretty, sex workers follow me to my room, hoping for a good time. I wasn't into that much fuckery.

New Orleans is one of our greatest cities, enjoy it!
This is a great post.

And 110% spot on.  Expect the juxtaposition of a Hustler club to a sit-down restaurant to a walk-up bar to a tourist trinket storefront and just embrace the place.

Purdue is the perfect job for Leipold, although I think he's personally invested in having his stamp on KU's stadium and facility upgrades.  That's a pretty rare opportunity in itself.  The average PU fan isn't going to be impressed with how the season ended, bowl results pending.  Also be interesting to see how KU does with the portal now they have a specific story to sell.

I hasn’t heard that rumor. If true (and good on him if so) then I think he’s ours for the remainder. With a 12 team playoff on the way, Kleiman’s best chance of getting a natty before he retires is at Cats U.

This is a great point, along with this *is* his program now.  The overall environment seems to have a pretty good vibe and looks to be "a place to be" fball/bball wise for a while at least.

Sounds like Brohm is gone to Louisville. 6mm/yr. Purdue either decided he wasn’t worth that, or was confident they can hire someone better.

My entire extended family, including my parents, went to Purdue (I grew a massive Purdue fan). They’re all certain Klieman is high on the list there. Don’t think he’d be interested, but you never know.

Interesting.  Half the wife's fam are Purdue grads, and BiL is a big (bball mostly) fan.  That would be a pretty favorable hire in his eyes; be interesting to see what any of the rest of the fam thinks.

It was just so freakish.  Don't think I've ever seen a rejection like that in football before. Jump ball, alternate possession to Cats....

Printing tarps with destroyed hangar images is just gold.  Russia going for it and settling on underground air bases is just amaze.  In so many ways, their .mil and .civ leadership is almost more caricature of a Bond villain, than something serious.  Thinking Goldfinger.

If I'm a KU fan, I'm livid at how Leipold handled that 4th quarter. That long ass drive when they showed absolutely no urgency, then the punt on the following drive was insane. Then after punt, he refused to use time outs as we ran the ball for 4 yards at a time. Someone needs to help me understand what the hell he was doing.

My theory is that he knew the only prayer they had of winning was to keep heavily utilizing Daniels in the run game and I think he might have been worried we were about to shatter him into a million pieces. And maybe he decided ya know I’m not quite ready to sacrifice my qb on the maybe 2% they’d pull it out

Yeah, their protections were starting to break down.  This was all about being healthy for their bowl game at that point.  They should be able to dominate whoever they get if they can go with the same starters as last night.

Most of the old artificial turf (which is not artificial grass) fields had large crowns.  OU was ridiculous.

NFLPA wants to ban slit film artificial grass fields.  FYI, the turf going in at K-State in the offseason is a hybrid slit film/monofilament field.

Went to the OU/USC game in '82, I think, maybe '81.  Got on to the field after the game and yeah, standing on one sideline and looking across to the other you were seeing people armpit/shoulder level.  That and just the unnatural feel to it. Quite a bit of spongy give.  You could really appreciate how that stuff could eat knees and how turf toe would develop.

I would think, at least for a game or two, it's a great opportunity for the pop pass to reappear in our repertoire.

Look at us getting top billing.

I think it might be the first ever saturday night game edition of the sunflower showdown
2004 in Lawrence was a night game. I remember, because it was depressing. Also, 2010 too. The juke game. That might have been a Thursday night game tho.

2004 was the last one you are right.  2010 was a Thursday night game.

Not sure of the year but it should have been the early '80s when KSU wore the alternate uniforms for the first time (mauve jerseys). That game was a Sat night under temporary lights. I believe the first "night" KSU/the other KS team was in 1947. Don't know how they pulled that off but apparently they did.

1982.  Was on TBS. Cats warmed up in regular unis and had silver/gray jerseys handed out to them to switch into in the locker room before kick.

Then there's McPherson - Bullpups - simply because Mac College was using Bulldogs.  Not that there was any intrinsic link between the two.

Russia really can't afford it - this says that they really didn't fully recover from WWII.  Also mentions that Ukraine is in the same position, maybe more so even, but will have the support of the western world to lean on.

Really, all a great gamble to build a legacy with a bang at the total risk of killing his country in a wimper.

Being very honest I am surprised they just haven't pulled back to that anyways

That’s basically a surrender position so id be surprised if anyone tried to push them out.  Have it and go back to sucking at everything you try.

If they don't 'eff with the dam, they'll be able to keep Crimea in operation with the canal and the Zaporizhzhia power station.  Losing Kherson would be a psychological blow to those in Russia aware of the nuances of the war, albeit offset by keeping Crimea in business. It would force Ukraine's hand to break the land bridge somewhere between Melitopol and Mariupol in order to move the needle in re-establishing pre 2014 borders.
Woogy, if I'm understanding correctly, the guys on this pod seem to think that blowing the dam effs up the canal that is needed to supply fresh water to Crimea (although Michael admits that he is not an engineering / hydrology expert)

This was a good War On The Rock ep. Michael and Ryan travelled to Ukr and share some of their insights. Sounds like they will have more content behind a paywall regarding their trip.

https://warontherocks.com/2022/10/southward-and-eastward-pressure-on-russian-forces/

That seems to be the consensus, yes.  The canal must be fed from the higher elevation of the reservoir pool rather than downstream below the dam.  Ukraine had cut flow to the canal after 2014, so Russia did have some capacity to supply Crimea.

Which is why ultimately I'm surprised they (Russia) hasn't done that. Kherson is going to be an ulcer they can't sustain and cutting their losses while being able to keep the largest nuclear power plant in the world and water seems like a Russia win-win.

And if I'm Ukraine, I'd be trying to break through between the lake and Mariupol, and split off the Crimea that way

The Russians are bad at Risk....

If I'm Ukraine, I'm moving like 3 tanks into Ural.
