Essentially Flyertalk / Lets Talk Skiing
« on: November 12, 2013, 08:57:44 AM »
I love skiing! My bro's and I have a little mini tradition of going on a ski trip to Colorado every January and its a blast!

We typically drive out to Keystone/Breck/Dillon from KC on Thursday around noon, ski Friday Saturday sunday then head back on Monday!

We are getting a big group of around 10-15 bro's and GF's this time and will be renting a house in Dillon(Hot tub is the only firm requirement) then skiing A-Basin/Breck/Copper.

I'm a pretty laid back skier and usually only do about 1 black a day. I spend the rest of the time cruising down blues and pounding beers on the ski lift...My favorite thing to do is follow random trails into the woods to see where they take me!

Where do you like to go on your ski trips?

Where do you stay?

What kind of Skier are you(Greens? Blues? Blacks? DOUBLE DIAMOND BLACK?!?)?

Do you think Asava will drive up from New Mexico to hang with a bunch of his IRL buds in Dillon?

Pffft! Just got my oil changed and the guy turning the wrenches told me he's a TECH grad, class of 84. I asked him why he is turning wrenches with a degree...apparently his farm blew away in a dust storm! LOL. Anyways he is finishing up now and just said gave me the "guns up" hand sign so I promptly called the cops and told them some toothless redneck is threatening me!

I was at the point. I turned to my buddy Tristan and opened my eyes real wide and said "WOW" before giving him a giant high five.

What about you?

Anyone had any yet?

Just went out to my car and saw a 7 toothed hill jack roaming the woods behind the parking lot wearing a WV shirt. Apparently he is hitchhiking his way to Manhattan since "its the most efficient form of transportation". LOL, WHAT A POOR!!! Anyways I told him I would give him a ride if he did me a favor.....that idiot is currently trying to steal copper from an AC unit outside the building...cops are on the way

Anyone have any experience?

My gpa had a baseball signed by the 1977 Yankee's that has been collecting dust for the past 30 years in a dresser drawer before I found it.

Its signed by Thurman Munson and a bunch of other players and according to the interwebz could be worth around $700.

Should I just throw it up on ebay? Does it need to be certified? Any local places that will buy it?

Anyone almost die?

All this talk about Doctors and how they introduce themselves reminded me that I nearly impaled myself on a knee high fence when I was up in Chicago a couple of weeks ago.

Around 11am we were walking from wrigleyville to the beach and playing catch with a football on the side streets. I'm jogging about 50% of full speed and give the "I'm open!" wave with my hand.

Buddy see's me but makes a terrible throw, I jump to catch it but don't notice I'm right next to a knee high fence...The fence trips me up and I land chest first on the stupid decorative spikes(lucklily they had rounded tops to prevent idiots from impaling themselves). 1 spike hit my chest about .5 inches from my neck and the others hit my pec and stomach. I also cut my leg pretty bad when it slammed against the fence, was squirting out blood  :sdeek:.

We had a ksu vet grad and a DR(physical therapy) with us so they were able to patch me up good enough to continue binging.

You can see the stupid fence in street view

What about you? Have you ever almost died?!?

So just started reading "The System, The Glory and Scandal of Big Time College Football".

Chapter 9 is about the different jobs that Directors of Football Operations perform, they are interviewing Stanford's DBO and he says

"There is a football program in the Big 12 where they have an equipment manager going to each coach's home and packing his bag before they leave on Friday for the away game" he said with more than a touch of disgust in his voice. "You're telling your coaches they don't have the wherewithal- they are too busy to pack their own bag and bring it with them on Friday to the office. Have the staff, have the equipment manager, go to a guy's home and pack their bag""

My sister was all like  :surprised: :runaway: :runaway: :surprised:

Kansas State Football / LHC Bill Snyder - True American Hero

Quote
So as not to be conspicuous, humiliated players wouldn’t go out on Saturday nights, wouldn’t wear their letter jackets around, wouldn’t even go to classes on Mondays — and sometimes Tuesday, it turns out (which begins to beg other questions).

Anyway, all of that stayed with Snyder, he said, but none of it resonated like this:

“There was a young guy in our program who tried to take his life during that period of time. Who had finished (playing), and it had such an impact on him,” he said. “Somebody told me about it, and I was able to find him. I didn’t know my way around here, and it was out by the lake, and off in one of those little park areas down there.

“And sure enough they guided me to him … and he was sitting in his car, and he’s got that hose wrapped around from the exhaust into the automobile, sitting there getting ready to give his life up.”

Snyder is not prone to public emotion or sharing such details, and he didn’t elaborate on how he was able to intercede.

But here he paused and choked up as his eyes misted over.

“That really had an impact on me, all of that did,” he said, his voice soon betraying another quiver. “And to think that this silly game has that kind of an impact on the lives of young people.”

Snyder noted he recently spoke by phone with “that young person who is doing extremely well right now.”

Essentially Flyertalk / Old MHK and Topeka Newspaper articles
« on: August 01, 2013, 10:28:11 PM »
So my sister works in Topeka and was going through some old micro film stuff and found a couple of gems. These are all from the 1960s I believe.

First one is about a city council debate to lift the ban of dancing in places that serve beer....City council man says "Its a well known fact he permiscuous(sp) women go to Junction City for their "Contacts" and we dont have that here"

Second and third ones just politically incorrect headlines

Essentially Flyertalk / Guess what is wrong with ben ji's car!
« on: June 10, 2013, 12:38:30 PM »
First let me give you some background- 2003 toyota corrolla, 120k. No warning lights or any issues before friday, had noticed that it was taking a lil bit longer to start and the clock inside was not as bright as it had been in the past, assumed I needed new battery.

Friday- Car takes longer to start than usual, turn over and catches after a couple seconds but you could tell it was struggling. Figure I need new battery.

Saturday- Car barely starts again and drive to autoparts store to get new battery, install new battery there but car did not start. Lights and everything worked fine when I turned key in ignition the car would not attempt to turn over. Guys at oreilly jump started car, let it run for a bit then turned off, started up but was struggling. Drove to GF's place in olathe and left car while we attended wedding in wichita.

Sunday- Car barely started at GF's house and would not start after I arrived home. Same problem I had yesterday, lights and electronics work fine but when I turned key no sound at all, would not even turn over. Cleaned battery terminals and searched google but could not find any solutions.

Monday- Tried to jumpstart car but nothing, would not turn over. Lights and eletronics still work.

ben ji's dad is coming over today after work and we will try and jump it again. Currently have appt set at shop for tomorrow morning, may have to get it towed in(AAA Member so free  :D).

Any gE'rs want to guess as to what is wrong with the car?

I'm going with needing a new starter or needs new battery cables!

Essentially Flyertalk / Characters from your childhood
« on: May 31, 2013, 01:00:38 PM »
In this thread we talk about random characters from your childhood that you still remember

Ralph- Elementary school custodian who was missing part of his arm below the elbow. He had some prostetic thing with a hook and when kids would ask him what happened to his arm he would tell them he lost it in a bowling accident, fingers got stuck in ball and ripped off his arm.

Anyone do this? I had no idea this was a common thing until recently.

Last week I saw a guy hunting for morels down by the KS river when I was fishing. He gave me a quick rundown on where to look and what the morels look like etc etc.

Then this weekend at a wedding in Independence KS some local was telling me how he found a bunch and they had just cooked them earlier in the day.

Essentially Flyertalk / New To Investing Thread
« on: April 16, 2013, 10:41:46 AM »
Side shot from the General Advice thread.... See below for ben ji's investing advice.

1. Contribute at least the max that your employer will match to your company 401k....Does not matter how poor you are or how much student debt you have, this is free money.

2. Once you have contributed to enough to get the full match to your company 401k and you still have more money to invest you have some options. You can keep putting more money in the 401k or you can open a Roth IRA.

But ben ji, why put it in a roth ira and not keep it in the 401k?

Well....

1. Roth IRA is after tax money and will not be taxed when you take it in retirement. If you are just starting out you will probably be a lower tax rate now than when you retire.

2. You have more investment options with an IRA. This allows you to find funds with lower expense ratio's and more targeted investing than your 401k Options.
