Essentially Flyertalk / Googling Yourself

I know everyone does it, anything bad/embarassing/not you show up from time to time?

My sister recently googled her name and the first thing that pops up is a post on some BLOG in england from someone with the exact same name/bbs screen name detailing how she is NOT sorry for sleeping with your husband.

My sister was all like  :surprised: :runaway: :runaway: :surprised:

Kansas State Football / LHC Bill Snyder - True American Hero
« on: August 06, 2013, 11:49:50 PM »
So as not to be conspicuous, humiliated players wouldn’t go out on Saturday nights, wouldn’t wear their letter jackets around, wouldn’t even go to classes on Mondays — and sometimes Tuesday, it turns out (which begins to beg other questions).

Anyway, all of that stayed with Snyder, he said, but none of it resonated like this:

“There was a young guy in our program who tried to take his life during that period of time. Who had finished (playing), and it had such an impact on him,” he said. “Somebody told me about it, and I was able to find him. I didn’t know my way around here, and it was out by the lake, and off in one of those little park areas down there.

“And sure enough they guided me to him … and he was sitting in his car, and he’s got that hose wrapped around from the exhaust into the automobile, sitting there getting ready to give his life up.”

Snyder is not prone to public emotion or sharing such details, and he didn’t elaborate on how he was able to intercede.

But here he paused and choked up as his eyes misted over.

“That really had an impact on me, all of that did,” he said, his voice soon betraying another quiver. “And to think that this silly game has that kind of an impact on the lives of young people.”

Snyder noted he recently spoke by phone with “that young person who is doing extremely well right now.”

Essentially Flyertalk / Old MHK and Topeka Newspaper articles

So my sister works in Topeka and was going through some old micro film stuff and found a couple of gems. These are all from the 1960s I believe.

First one is about a city council debate to lift the ban of dancing in places that serve beer....City council man says "Its a well known fact he permiscuous(sp) women go to Junction City for their "Contacts" and we dont have that here"

Second and third ones just politically incorrect headlines

Essentially Flyertalk / Guess what is wrong with ben ji's car!
« on: June 10, 2013, 12:38:30 PM »
First let me give you some background- 2003 toyota corrolla, 120k. No warning lights or any issues before friday, had noticed that it was taking a lil bit longer to start and the clock inside was not as bright as it had been in the past, assumed I needed new battery.

Friday- Car takes longer to start than usual, turn over and catches after a couple seconds but you could tell it was struggling. Figure I need new battery.

Saturday- Car barely starts again and drive to autoparts store to get new battery, install new battery there but car did not start. Lights and everything worked fine when I turned key in ignition the car would not attempt to turn over. Guys at oreilly jump started car, let it run for a bit then turned off, started up but was struggling. Drove to GF's place in olathe and left car while we attended wedding in wichita.

Sunday- Car barely started at GF's house and would not start after I arrived home. Same problem I had yesterday, lights and electronics work fine but when I turned key no sound at all, would not even turn over. Cleaned battery terminals and searched google but could not find any solutions.

Monday- Tried to jumpstart car but nothing, would not turn over. Lights and eletronics still work.

ben ji's dad is coming over today after work and we will try and jump it again. Currently have appt set at shop for tomorrow morning, may have to get it towed in(AAA Member so free  :D).

Any gE'rs want to guess as to what is wrong with the car?

I'm going with needing a new starter or needs new battery cables!

Essentially Flyertalk / Characters from your childhood
« on: May 31, 2013, 01:00:38 PM »
In this thread we talk about random characters from your childhood that you still remember

Ralph- Elementary school custodian who was missing part of his arm below the elbow. He had some prostetic thing with a hook and when kids would ask him what happened to his arm he would tell them he lost it in a bowling accident, fingers got stuck in ball and ripped off his arm.

Essentially Flyertalk / Mushroom Hunting
« on: April 29, 2013, 09:20:25 AM »
Anyone do this? I had no idea this was a common thing until recently.

Last week I saw a guy hunting for morels down by the KS river when I was fishing. He gave me a quick rundown on where to look and what the morels look like etc etc.

Then this weekend at a wedding in Independence KS some local was telling me how he found a bunch and they had just cooked them earlier in the day.

Essentially Flyertalk / New To Investing Thread
« on: April 16, 2013, 10:41:46 AM »
Side shot from the General Advice thread.... See below for ben ji's investing advice.

1. Contribute at least the max that your employer will match to your company 401k....Does not matter how poor you are or how much student debt you have, this is free money.

2. Once you have contributed to enough to get the full match to your company 401k and you still have more money to invest you have some options. You can keep putting more money in the 401k or you can open a Roth IRA.

But ben ji, why put it in a roth ira and not keep it in the 401k?

1. Roth IRA is after tax money and will not be taxed when you take it in retirement. If you are just starting out you will probably be a lower tax rate now than when you retire.

2. You have more investment options with an IRA. This allows you to find funds with lower expense ratio's and more targeted investing than your 401k Options.

Frank was in his first season sans Beasley/Walker and on his way to a second round exit of the NIT. Most people agreed that the previous season was just a flash in the pan and KSU would struggle to maintain any success in BBall. Our 2 new Bball recruits were Butch Awaji and Abdul Herrera(We did have gruds and judge coming in next year but there was always the threat that Dalonte420 could leave and take them with him at any time)

25-5, Tied for Big12 lead with 1 game remaining. 4 straight NCAA tourney appearances including wins each year(The 3 we have played in) and an E8 in 2010. Winningest(sp?) senior class in school history. First year coach oscar Weber is a strong canidate for B12COY. Future is bright with Angel/Shane/Gip coming back.

Ron Prince had just been fired after going 5-7 and losing to KU for the 3rd straight year. After "Rumors" of hiring Gary Patterson KSU Decides to bring back old balls who had gone 9-13 in the 2 years before he retired. His stated purpose was to "Calm the waters". Bob Krause, Stud Fan/Bad AD, was running our Athletic department and news was leaking out regarding the "Napkin Extension" he had given Prince.

Back to back 10+ win seasons and COY honors for Old Balls including a Big12 Title. Katz were in the hunt for a national title until the second weekend of November, ditto for CK7 and the Heisman. DSams primed and ready to take over next year.

Pretty crazy to think about how much has changed in the last 4 Years. Feel free to include anything I may have missed.

Essentially Flyertalk / Electric dog fence
« on: March 04, 2013, 02:15:06 PM »
Anyone have one?

My adorable little pup has learned how to climb the 4ft chain link fence in my backyard and keeps getting in the neighbors yard to play with their dog.

Was thinking about getting an electric fence with a collar and weaving it around the top of the fence instead of burying it. Will this work? Would the metal chain link fence interfere with it?

Any suggestions on how to keep the dog in the backyard?

Essentially Flyertalk / Second Job/Side Business

Anyone have a part time second job/business on the side?

I'm not hurting for money, it would be more of something to keep me busy on random nights. I've narrowed it down to a couple of options and would like some goEMAW feedback.

Cashier/Worker at Liquor store(Thinking Rimann's, no hole in the wall place for ben ji)
1. I really like craft beers
2. Discounts?
3. Seems like you would see alot of characters

1. Would probably have to work weekends, thats a no go.
2. Low pay? $10 an hour for 10 hours a week only works out to around $5,000 a year.
3. Dont know if I would enjoy it

Part Time Lawn Business with brother
1. Had a lawn mowing business in high school and enjoyed it, still have most of the equipment
2. Brother works for a nursery and does some lawn mowing/landscaping on the side, could probably just tag along with that.
3. All cash transactions

1. Old people telling me I missed a blade
2. Would probably have to work weekends over the summer.
3. Dont want to knock on doors like I did in high school, would probably be kinda creepy now that I cant pull the neighborhood kid line.

Smoke Circles coming out of lawrence that Self has moved out of his house and is now renting an apartment....Also may be losing the respect of the team because he cant hide it anymore now that little T Self is a walkon.

MANHATTAN, Kan. (CBS St. Louis) - A new trend called “cyberloafing” is making its way into places of work throughout the nation – and in a big way.

According to Newswise, the average worker spends 60 to 80 percent of his or her time at the office on the Internet, engaging in tasks that have nothing to do with their jobs.

The study that found out about the inefficiency of the American work force was conducted by a researcher at Kansas State University. Joseph Ugrin, an assistant professor of accounting at KSU, reportedly teamed up with John Pearson, an associate professor of management at Southern Illinois University, to look into the matter.

And when they investigated, they found that all employees – old and young alike – are deviating from work tasks during the day at alarming rates.

“Older people are doing things like managing their finances, while young people found it much more acceptable to spend time on social networking sites like Facebook,” Ugrin was quoted as saying.

Younger employees were especially prone to deviating from work-related activity, most frequently to check social networking sites during work hours, Newswise learned.

“We found that for young people, it was hard to get them to think that social networking was unacceptable behavior,” Ugrin observed. “Just having a policy in place did not change their attitudes or behavior at all. Even when they knew they were being monitored, they still did not care.”

Researchers also noted that the looming threat of managerial reprimand and the perceived presence of “Big Brother” could negatively affect office morale. However, without consequences, employers allegedly may not get anything out of their staff.

Ugrin pondered, “We don’t want to make everyone at work upset because the corporate office is watching over their employees’ shoulders … but what if workers are wasting all of their time online? Where’s the balance?”

Alright, thats it, im out, yall have a good night. This ones over

Start up the "we own Texas" chant

I am actually seeing a lot of things to like from these young players. For example, when they commit a turnover and trip over themselves while the other team gets a layup, they know exactly how to fall to the floor without causing a serious injury. That's showing some veteran savvy beyond their years, and it really makes me feel good about their potential.

What a surprise, K-state is way better than us.

Should we send them a thank you basket of various wheat strains
At least we took one of them out......Yea....Get him a body bag!!!!

The intentional foul by felix is the most encouraging thing I've seen. I was starting to think they didn't give a $#@! about getting a train run on them by the big 12

This is a god damn war and we look like France

Some other positives I have noticed about the team:

1. Many of our players are much taller than the average male.

2. Nobody has died.

<3 <3 <3
I hate oscar webber and his bitch voice

Seriously, why dont we offer Smith or Calipari or Donovan or someone $10 mil a year to coach here? We can afford it, then some

I turned it on ESPN2 and all im seeing is more press on the Newtown, Conn. stuff

too soon?

Goddamn that chant boils my blood

"We own Texas" chants getting louder and louder.

Apparently they don't watch much women's volleyball. Suck on that!

"We own Texas"

"Just like football"

Deloss would be embarrassed if he was awake.

On the bright side, I think they have a good shot at winning the 4A-II State High School tourney this year.

Srlsy, did anyone really expect us to beat KSU tonight? Anyone?

It's the new Texas way. Say things are going to be better next year, perform poorly, collect paychecks.

I wish this game was on LHN so I couldn't see it.

Is there anything better? I could spend all day looking at streetviews in random cities.

Why just today I was checking out an overhead view of Kansas State University and I noticed they now have street views of the quad and other paths around campus. Prospective EMAW Elites can now take a tour of our campus through google maps. I can only imagine how many jaws will drop when they turn the corner around Eisenhower hall and see the full beauty of Hale Library.

They have ski view cams on certain mountians that allow you to see what the slopes actually look like.

Sheesh, are they coming out of the woodwork at your office today as well?

KU grad on my team came over earlier to make some small talk. I pretended he wasnt there but he just kept talking about some McLemore kid so I JUMPED UP AND KNOCKED HIS COFFE MUG OUT OF HIS HAND AND THE HOT COFFEE WENT ALL OVER HIS FACE! Should of seen the look on that guys face!!

Essentially Flyertalk / Best Drink For Different Meals
« on: January 11, 2013, 03:54:41 PM »
The soft drinks thread got me thinking, what is your go to drink for different meals?

When it comes to breakfast I LOVE to just go crazy with 3 different drinks. I will have a strong cup of coffee with a splash of milk, a nice big glass of cold milk and if I have some OJ in the fridge I will have a glass of that as well.

I'm not a big cola fan but I make sure to always order an Ice Cold Coca Cola at the following places.
-Chipolte....NOTHING takes the burn away like the crisp taste of coca cola
-McDonalds...Really good coca cola here!
-Sonic...No route 44, a large will do for me.
-Winsteads...There is something magical about a single windstead with cheese onions mustard pickles and lettuce paired with a coca cola.

When it comes to dinner I am strictly a beer guy. I usually get about 1 down and reach that perfect "I can just start to feel the alcohol making me warm and happy" phase before the food arrives.

What about you?
