Other Sports (Tiger's Back) / Re: competitive little kid sports
« on: March 05, 2024, 12:32:22 PM »
Wrestling is good, overall. Girls wrestling is probably even better, v glad it's growing in popularity. Here's a breakdown:

Peggy Po's:
-Harder than basically any other sport, gives you an "If I did X at wrestling practice, I can do [insert hard task here]" mentality;
-Both an individual and team sport, so best of both worlds
-Inside
-Athletic skills developed are transferrable to later in life more than like, throwing a curve ball
-Funnier athletes than a lot of other sports (from my experience)
-Weight cutting is much more under control now than it was 15+ years ago. Insane weight cuts are much more infrequent.
-Spot on the team for every weight and body type
-It's pretty accessible for those w/out a ton of money

Nancy Neg's:
-Tied with baseball/softball for "parent demo most of this blog probably wants to hang out with the least"
-Some skin diseases, all of which are curable and found at your average daycare (except the herpes one)
-Cauliflower ear (only if you're a dummy who doesn't wear headgear)
-Early morning wake-ups and tournaments where you can spend all day somewhere and compete for maybe 12 minutes (similar to swim, basketball, baseball, etc)

Essentially Flyertalk / Best poster/BBS thread combinations

Well, gentlemen, I took a little 11-month vacation that made it hard for me to post, but reading gE was still an option. Can't thank you all enough for keeping me busy. Missed the Pop Tart Bowl but am excited for the future with Avery.

That time made me think a lot about the best combination of poster and thread--like, the kind where you see a specific gE blogger has posted in a thread and it gets you excited to read it. Here are some combos I came up with, and I hope you all will do the same.
  • Tom in the farming thread
  • ben ji in any thread about his dad, including the farming thread
  • AST in any thread about cooking
  • steve dave in the credit card thread
I'm very open to hearing about other people's favorite poster/thread combos.

Kansas State Football / Re: Football Recruiting Thread

Seiler won at least one state title, I think two at Bishop Carroll.

Navarro Schunke won the same folkstyle national wrestling tournament that Geary won. He also has at least one Fargo national championship in Greco-Roman wrestling, which is probably the most impressive accolade of any 'Cat football player. (He also has a freestyle All-America finish at Fargo.)

Geary never won Fargo, but then again, hestarted wrestling in ninth grade.

So Schunke is the most accomplished wrestler in 'Cat football history the second he steps on campus. But Geary was probably just as good, if not better in folkstyle. Would love to have seen 2013 Geary vs 2023 Schunke.

I'm showing my entire old ass here (43 yo) but if you drilled that wayback machine all the way down to southwest ks all conference and/or all area southwest daily times newspaper (serving the ok panhandle and sw ks region  :D ) you'd see one of our best (by far the best) posters listed. no big deal (huge rough ridin' deal irl). no biggie (BIG).

Congrats on your all-conference status in SWKS. I bet you would have earned some playing time (special teams + garbage time) with the big boys (5A/6A). You would have impressed tons of girls (1) at a real school (probably not).

Ran into a Diener buzzsaw multiple times as a fan and (actual) player. Did NOT like. Whipped absolute Salina butt at tennis tho.

From 1993 - 2005, a Salina team made the state championship every year except for 1995 and 1997. Diener won six titles. Unclear why it never worked out at G-E.

I don't get a lot of posting time these days due to personal complications, but I had to chime in here on Cf3's 0 Tacos Take. ("0TT") This post took me like 3 days to type out on a phone bc I can't get Tapatalk but I proceeded anyway bc I'm that committed to it.

Been watching Rocky movies with CF3 jr to get ready for Creed III and I have a hot take.

Of the first 4 Rocky movies, IV is the worst by a lot. The acting is terrible, the story is super predictable and boring, the fight is dumb because there's like 200 knockout level punches. There are 3 montages in the movie, they all suck. The training scene song "Hearts on Fire" is terrible. The crowd turning on their national hero and supporting Rocky is stupid. The scene where Apollo dies is ridiculous, Rocky holds a dying Apollo in his arms as the press crowds around taking pictures- there's not a doctor or paramedic around?

Rocky I and Rocky II are great movies, that have great characters. Rocky III is a good movie but is kind of corny.

People who think they love Rocky IV are either dumb or haven't seen it since they were 12.

While I enjoy Cf3 a great deal, this is a terrible take. (Also Rocky definitely deserves its own thread. =mods?=)

Rocky Bonafides
I completed a Rocky rewatch with the Li'l Meals a few years ago. I also had a high school relationship that was centered around the rank order of Rocky movies and whether III or IV was better. For a long time, Rockys I-V were the only movies I owned on DVD. A guy I know was playing "Hearts on Fire" as we lifted weights together less than two months ago, and the song absolutely still gets the blood pumping. So believe me when I state: Cf3's take is unequivocally wrong.

Cultural Endurance of Rocky IV
Rocky IV--while I agree, a different movie than Rocky I--is the best for exactly the reasons Cf3 hates it. Most people can name 1-2 iconic lines or scenes from Rockys I-III, but anyone who has seen it can name significantly more memorable moments from IV. They might remember the run up the stairs and "Adriaaaaaan," but that's all that most casual fans remember. And they probably can't tell you if those moments happen in I, II, or III.

But if people hear someone talking about Rocky IV, they will either say "Is that the one with the Russian?" or just immediately start quoting it--just as DQ did. They will talk about the training montage, Drago getting injected with Soviet steroids, Rocky winning the Cold War, "If I's can change," Apollo dying, the sexy robot, etc. They remember much more about the film than Rocky I, II, III, or V.

Rocky I may have an Oscar, but no one remembers where Rocky and Adrian met, how he proposed, how he trained (other than the stair scene), that the final fight was a Rocky loss, etc.

Culmination of Previous / Foundation for Future Movies
Rocky IV is an inflection point in the franchise. It is the culmination of the Apollo and Adrian storylines (both die during or after IV). It is Rocky at the peak of his powers--he has vanquished all foes.

It is also the basis for the Creed franchise. Is Adonis as bitter at the world if his dad doesn't die at the hands of Drago? (spoiler alert) It is literally the foundation for Creed II, as Adonis fights Drago's son (in a movie that made me IRL cry on a Southwest Airlines flight). We literally do not have the Creed franchise as we know it without Rocky IV.

Pre-Eminent Montage
The two iconic montages of the series are the Snow Montage (IV) and the Stairs Montage (I). But if you watch it again, the Rocky I montage is really just Rocky running around Philly or working out in a dirty gym for the first couple of minutes. Stallone's feats are impressive, but his body isn't necessarily overwhelming. The thing that makes it iconic is the music. (Note: most people think Eye of the Tiger is from the Rocky I montage. It's not.) Even when he gets to the top of the steps, he's by himself, he just kind of dances around, and then there's a freeze frame.

The Snow Montage blows it out of the water. The music is more "of its time." (Tons of hilarious synth.) The juxtaposition between Drago's training in a super high tech Soviet lab vs. Rocky's American can-do spirit out in the wilderness. (He helps a horse get unstuck from the snow like 10 seconds in?) Rocky is followed--and subsequently ditches--some KGB members. He cuts a ton of wood. His body is way more chiseled (probably from pulling Paulie in a sled, not from anything synthetic) than in I. Drago punches the computer thing. Rocky does an insane ab bend thing on a table that I have literally never seen another human do. He lifts a giant bag of rocks and also a bunch of people in a...chariot? It concludes with Our Guy climbing a MOUNTAIN and yelling his opponent's name loud enough for all of Soviet Russia to hear him.

Heck, it's even a DOUBLE MONTAGE. We get to see Rocky and Drago montaging together, as enemies (and future buds).

People will say that Rocky I is the best montage, because they remember the stairs and because they think it's Eye of the Tiger playing. But it's clear that IV's montage is better.

Best Villain
Drago is a better villain than Apollo and Clubber Lang. Apollo may be a better character, but Drago is a better villain.

Most Rewatchable
It's easily the most rewatchable movie of the series--a point MIR has already made. Rocky I is actually kind of slow. Rocky II is kind of the same movie as I but not as groundbreaking. Rocky III is beloved by Mr. T fans but is kind of a proto-IV. Rocky V and Rocky Balboa are largely ignored.

The movie that my kids wanted to rewatch the most? Rocky IV. The one they look forward to watching when we're back together? Rocky IV.

I could go on, but it's more important to get this post out than to make sure it's perfect.  @Cartierfor3, ain't gonna be no rematch.

Took a self-guided tour of a federal building two years ago this month because I believed I was doing the right thing.

Turns out that will get you very limited access to goEMAW and also will cause you to miss the Big XII championship (and holidays).

In 4th grade, WonderDad was pitching me a neon orange baseball and I smashed a line drive right into his forehead--leaving imprints of the seams and almost certainly concussing him. (Concussions had not been invented yet.)

He took it like a champ. Happy Father's Day, WonderDad!

Sounds very easy and cheap. Thanks, goEMAW!

Hey @SteveDave, how do I build a house? Anybody have good links/resources for...literally the entire process?

This would be a second house out on some sweet sweet land.

Roll ‘em if you got ‘em

https://www.cnbc.com/2021/09/13/house-democrats-propose-new-retirement-plan-rules-for-the-wealthy.html

This proposal only applies to individuals making $400,000/year ($450,000 for couples) or with IRAs valued at $10 million. So, while this will disproportionately impact KSU grads, it likely won't apply to the vast vast vast majority of the US.

I once ate three Chipotle burritos in 37 minutes. Does that go here?

For those of you wondering, the burritos were vetted by coworkers and appropriately filled with a meat, bean, fajita veggies, cheese, multiple salsas, and sour cream. There was no guac because this was post college and none of us had that kind of cash.

Need to get back in the churn game. Mrs. WM and I both have a companion pass through the end of this year, I have an Ink and a Sapphire, pretty sure she just has an Ink.

What's the best bang for buck out there right now? Saw a 90k Delta offer for $250, but am not really sure if that's worth it. Should I get her a Sapphire? Something else? What's the hot goss?

IRL friend Wacky--this yoga video is a total gamechanger for lower back issues. I've recommended it to all of my running friends and to anyone with back issues. So far the feedback has been universally positive, from my young out-of-shape friends to my very un-yoga father-in-law.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PojgMEUIy-4

The best part is that it's 27 minutes long and you don't have to stand up even once. STRONG recommend from your guy WM.

I learned recently that my dad pitched a no-hitter in a sixth grade softball game at school. He also punched a kid in the neck at Vacation Bible School.

A little tip for anyone out there at VBS--don't mess with a kid who can bring that slow pitch heat.

Tom, that looks really nice. What's going in those beds once they're ready? Silage?

I did some handymanning myself this weekend by hiring someone to fix a bunch of stuff around the house. Will be paying them in cash because I think they still want to collect unemployment.

Cool, thanks a lot Mr. GQ for holding us all up in the security line when you have to undo your belt and put your trench coat through and put your suit jacket through and put your fedora through and untie your tie and undo your shoes.

Ts and Ps about your lack of TSA Pre.

Anyone plant a garden this year?

I'm almost all flowers this year. Planted a few cukes and poblanos, but other than that it's 1,000,000 sunflowers for me. I also built a giant raised bed butterfly garden for @MrsWonderMeal for Mother's Day that is basically a high quality Sirloin Stockade for pollinators.

Other than that, my lime/lemon trees are starting strong and fig tree got compliments from a neighbor. The wildcard this year is the pomegranate--looks like I might finally get some fruit off of it after about five years of waiting.

I just applied and was approved for a SW personal card with a 40k point bonus so I can get the companion pass for 2020/2021. Received the 75k business bonus on like January 2nd. Had to wait out my 24 months to get another personal and then have been waiting for the bonus to increase, but it just wasn't happening. Finally just ripped the bandaid off so I can get the pass and move on to other cards.

For whatever reason, Chase seems to be mushing Mrs. Wondermeal v hard on any of her new applications, which doesn't make sense since we have the same credit history and she is under 5/24. Misogyny?
