I knew the SEC would come crawling to K-State to help bail them out of that Missouri mistake.

Sitting guys out after a concussion is nice, but does little to prevent or heal them. It's probably better now than it was 10 years ago. The real problem is CTE. I think the only way to address that is to come up with magnetic helmets so player's heads don't crash into each other hundreds of times a game. Padding on the outside of the helmet would help in the meantime, but the NFL doesn't want the sound of the game to change, so they are in denial that there is a problem.

I still love watching the sport, but I feel a lot more guilty about it since hearing an interview with Steve Almond before last season. I wish I was still in denial too like Roger Goodell. http://www.npr.org/sections/monkeysee/2014/09/24/351181812/making-the-case-against-football

My guess at what happened:
1. Leti gets shopped by Deb and staff
2. Currie knows about it
3. Romero asks for release
4. Release denied
5. Romero goes to the media
6. Currie digs in
7. Appeal denied
8. Jay Bilas et al cause shitstorm
9. Currie thinks this looks bad, Kirk is befuddled, Uni PR is incompetent
10. Finally Kirk makes it happen due to media pressure

Realignment.

The French already did create a machine to quickly and humanely carry out executions, but it leaves a pretty big mess for the executioners. Also it might make people realize they are killing someone when a head starts rolling around and blood spurts all over the ground. And it's French and gay.

I'm against the Death Penalty on moral grounds in that I think they are state-sanctioned revenge killings, and they typically don't help the victim's family psychologically as seemingly intended. Studies have shown it is not a deterrent. It's very obvious that it is applied to minorities at a much higher rate than to white people. 1/25 of those killed were actually innocent of the crime they were convicted of. And now we can't even do this procedure properly.

How many reasons do we need to end this practice? Oh yeah it appeals broadly to tough on crime politicians and the stand your ground-types. This is the mentality that turned America into the biggest prison state in the world by a large margin. If our Supreme Court weren't packed with Bush appointees, we might have a chance to ban the Death Penalty. I doubt it happens for a couple more decades, though.

Quote
Stephen F. Austin coach Brad Underwood, a former Kansas State assistant for six seasons under Bob Huggins and Frank Martin, has not been contacted by Missouri, though Underwood told The Star on Tuesday that he’d be interested.

“That’s an unbelievable job,” he said. “That’s my type of job. The basketball aside, it’s been a great spot for many years with a ton of great players. It’s a great university, but I’m still the coach at Stephen F.”

Unless Mizzou is about to make a Gregg Marshall HR-type hire, they look really really dumb right now. Or they are just giving up on basketball.

Well the default stance by K-State is that all transfer requests are denied, which is what Bilas has been on about all morning. So essentially K-State didn't have to do anything.

16
We could also put a sign out on I-70 that says "come talk to our players and see if they'd like to play at your school!"

17
Fitz is claiming the former regime has been "destroying records" on the way out (paper, e-mail, etc). He also said Mittie offered Shalee a job that she declined.

18
If I'm Alden I hire Underwood now. Seems like a no-brainer. Maybe Pastner? Gregg Marshall isn't going to pick up the phone for Mizzou.

Essentially Flyertalk / Re: Tipping Bartenders
« on: January 17, 2014, 03:52:31 PM »
Most bartenders are living off their tips, so don't be a cheapskate you dicks. Also I've made friends with most of the service people at places I frequent so I end up over-tipping a lot of the time. If I'm in a place where I don't know them I tip $1 a drink or sometimes $2 if it has red bull. Anything more than 2 drinks and I try to shoot for 20%. If you are paying cash you will tip more this way, so it's better to just run a tab and figure the 20%.

Saw Catching Fire last night and it was quite good--almost as good as the first one, which I thought was surprisingly excellent bit of Sci-Fi for adults. Really looking forward to the next 2 (though I wish it was just a trilogy.)  Quickest 2.5 hour movie I've ever sat through. ***1/2 out of 4.

Mr. Banks was nice, funny, sweet. Kind of thing you can take your prude parents to. I give it ***/4.

I can't wait to see Her, as the reviews have been off the charts. I am curious to see if it knocks Gravity off my number 1 movie of the year. I saw a similar movie (sci fi romance) called TiMer, which was pretty decent for a Netflix movie.

I really have a long list of movies in theaters right now that I want to see, but I'll need to hold off for rentals so I have something to carry me through the doldrums of summer comic book crap.
