Situated betwixt the University of Colorado – Boulder, and the University of Kansas – Lawrence, the Manhattan community is on the very front lines of our country’s war on drugs.

Ever since its inception, the Dwight D. Eisenhower interstate highway (I-70),  has been awash with the commerce of black marketers – Men with a blood thirsty profit motive and a more-than-willing consumer base.  In the academic community it’s common knowledge that one need only whisper for dope or give a nod of the head, and you’ll find yourself with a bounty of pharmalogicals at either of the afore mentioned institutions.

What does this have to do with Kansas State University athletics?  In a word, Everything.  Until we begin to crack down on the opium dens and dope houses in Lawrence and Boulder, we are fighting a losing war in Manhattan.  In Howard Bryant’s biography of the great Henry Aaron, he recalls how Henry’s father used to remind him that the white man wanted to “…’cut the head off of the snake,’which meant emasculating a black male in order break his family.” (The last hero: a life of Henry Aaron By Howard Bryant, Pantheon 2010).  That rings true in the case at hand, would that we only had one head to remove!  The action that must be taken is the decapitation of BOTH heads, Boulder and Lawrence.  I am personally calling for the crackdown on the prevalent and destructive drug cultures that are leaching into surrounding communities – Most notably, Manhattan, Kansas.

There is hope!  Governor Sam Brownback (Agricultural Economics, 1979) is keenly aware of this matter.  You can bet dollars to donuts (as certain soon-t0-be-HOF football coach is fond of saying!) that crackdowns WILL happen, and will happen fast.  For the Wildcat family, this is welcomed news.  For all others, I encourage you  to think twice before you load your dope cargo onto your veritable iron-mules and embark on Dwight D. Eisenhower’s highway.
