lol yea on how much deficits and debt would matter when spent on liberal policies, but granted fiscal conservatives (in the Senate) are in some ways helping tank Trump by not wanting to pass another large stimulus bill (deep state?!?!?)

This has some cool (hopefully accurate) info and interactive infographics on the monetary/response side of things.

The Trump administration has opened an investigation into Princeton University over the school president’s recent statement that students there face “systematic racism” and that racism is “embedded” in the structures of the university. Education Department officials notified Princeton this week that they are examining whether the university’s “admitted racism” means that it made materially false statements when it for years assured the public and the federal government that it doesn’t discriminate based on race.

Dunno if this should go here or Covid thread.

Trump initially suggested that states could use unspent CARES Act money to meet the $100 match. But DeSantis plans to use the nearly $6 billion sent to Florida by Congress to pay for the state’s coronavirus response and patch holes in the budget.

...

State Sen. Jose Javier Rodriguez, a Miami Democrat, said other states would get federal tax dollars because Florida is “so unbelievably cheap.”

“The idea we can’t identify a pot of money to draw down a three-to-one margin is just obscene,” Rodriguez said.

And it is good to see that on this subject, as in other parts of climate policy, there is substantial overlap among centrists and progressives. If Biden finds himself in the Oval Office, he will have a broadly popular and extremely detailed road map.

The settlement appears to be one of the largest of its kind in the United States, where police departments are often shielded from having to pay damages for deaths in their custody.

It does not explicitly admit wrongdoing on the city’s part, but it will be accompanied by reforms of the Louisville Metro Police Department, including a requirement that commanders approve search warrants before they are put to a judge, Fischer said at a news conference.

Woah, that's pretty crazy (both the scale and low prevalence). Wonder what kind of test they used.

Another problem, they said, was that it took three to four days for participants to get their results so they could have been spreading the virus as they waited.

I do think it's important to note that early action is very high leverage if it can be sustained (I think right now a lot of conservatives believe that countries like NZ, Australia, Germany, South Korea, Japan, Belgium ect are inevitably going to fail and regress to the "mean" ie US levels, I don't think that's a given). Even if they do...if a vaccine comes about this winter, well that time not being at US levels for a sustained period of time is certainly appealing if you value life or long term health consequences. I also don't think it's a given that Sweden won't have a second wave if their behavior changes.

Along the same lines kinda, about death rates and the new guy Atlas.

That's pretty dumb, not a huge surprise that the EU would have more total excess deaths given they got hit harder first before widespread testing and we got a leg up on lockdowns. Doesn't mean we're currently handling it better. And we may actually be handling it better than Spain and France currently, but that's because of average daily infections, not excess deaths six months ago.

From what I can tell Germany is still doing exceptionally well.

Yes. Sweden too!

Kinda crazy how Sweden and Germany are in the same spot in per capita new cases yet Germany has like 1/5th of Sweden's deaths per capita.

Spain looks to be trending worse.

Not that I think he knows anything, but the other night Michael Cohen said he would resign if he loses the election and have Pence pardon him.

For the purposes of this poll, I'm going to say that is a distinction without a difference under the assumption that those actions would be premeditated by both Trump and Pence. So a Pence pardon is under Yes or Will try and fail.

I don't know if I'm doing the math correctly, but predicit has ~6/10 for Biden to win and ~2/10 for Trump to pardon himself. Does that equate to people thinking ~1/3 if Biden wins for Trump to pardon himself?

Honestly I'd think chances would be higher if Biden wins, I just can't think of a good reason Trump wouldn't want to use power for self benefit/protection since he has shown to harbor a deep sense of persecution. I guess maybe it could be an image thing to not want to look guilty, but I'd think he'd be apt to just say he's protecting himself from another "witch hunt" and certain people would just agree with him.

Could Trump pardon himself?

This is not clear. The only limitation explicitly stated in the Constitution is a ban on using a pardon to stop an impeachment proceeding in Congress, and the only obvious implicit limitation is that he cannot pardon offenses under state law.
