Are there any good shows happening in the northeastern Kansas region over the next couple of weeks?

I've had a great run of excellent shows lately (Reverend Peyton, Billy Strings, Andy Frasco) & was looking for something fun while I'm back in the area.

A robust transcontinental rail system would be better than the interstate highway system but it's too late for that now.  Passenger carrying flying drones are the future.

So, like airplanes?

Probably been discussed earlier, but American Primeval is good. It’s got a GoThrones vibe in the cowboy mountain west. I like the scary Mormons.

Eh you could argue 2016 was a fluke. This wasn't a fluke, it was a real shift.
Yeah the shift towards trump from Latinos is pretty incredible
What issues drive that?

The entire R platform is to convince people that they are going to make it worse for "other people" than they have it. It doesn't really matter who the "other" people are. It doesn't even matter that their own lives won't be noticeably better, it just matters that others will have it worse.
That doesn't explain a double digit shift from 2020
Last night they were emphasizing that a big component of the demographic shifts in blacks and Latinos was among males specifically. The difference between now and 2020 is that the Democratic candidate (1) was not connected to Obama, and (2) was a woman.

yeah, this is probably it. It's sad, but i bet a ton of dudes out there just aren't going to vote for a woman regardless.

I was going to say the same thing. I think most of that shift can be explained by simple sexism.

Thanks for the tips Mich- and MIR. I had a great weekend at the Open, and the best part was being to get so close to the action on the small side courts. The nosebleed seats at the big stadiums give a weird, video-game like perspective.

Also, on the whole ... tennis fans are a much better-looking group of people than the typical crowds at March madness or any football game.

I'm going to the US Open first weekend.
I've never been to a professional tennis match before -- any tips?

Do we have a flederamus sighting?

Not yet -- I'm flying there tomorrow afternoon  :)
Thanks for all the tips. I'm a big doubles fan, and that's what I am most looking forward to seeing.

My Dove Men Care shampoo is the Caffeine + Menthol variety.  It's pretty great when you're running a little behind in the morning and don't quite have enough time to make coffee and rip on a lung dart.
I have this exact thing. That's a brilliant description of the 'poo.
Also, I have some Doc Bronner's, which has oily extracts from just about every plant that grows from the earth.

Did Pete even live through the lin elliot debacle? Having a great kicker who is absolute nails in the postseason is worth its weight in gold (or .25 million more than the next highest paid kicker).

I highly doubt we win our last 2 super bowls if we replaced butker with a league average kicker.

So this phrase "worth its weight in gold" ...
Butker is getting paid ~$6.5 million per year (average over the next 4 years) and weighs about 200 pounds, so he makes about $2,000 per ounce
Gold is something like ~$2,400 /ounce right now [daymn]

So he is getting paid close to, but somewhat less than, his weight in gold this year.  Seems like a hell of a bargain to me.     :kstategrad:

Does anybody know if a suspended player (i.e. Rice) is still allowed to practice / study film with their team?

Sorry to keep beating my The Rest is History drum ITT but they just did an interview with Tom Hanks about going to the moon that was both fascinating and entertaining. Highly recommend if you have any interest in space exploration whatsoever.

Wow, I never knew Tom Hanks went to the moon!

Taika Watiti on Smartless has been my favorite. I do enjoy the podcast, but I feel like every time I'm really excited for a guest, they joke around with each other for 50% of the show while the guest is waiting for them to finish.

I've been driving a lot lately, and I also really like listening to Smartless. Every episode has stuff in it that makes me laugh. However, they are all terrible at interviewing. The hosts (esp Jason) love to hear themselves talk, but they rarely get around to forming an actual question or even letting the guest reply before they start talking over them. Not sure if this is an intentional running gag, or if that's just who they are, or maybe a little of both?

I got eye surgery right at 10 years ago. Thousand percent worth it. My doctor did tell me that it would only buy me another 10 years or so before I may need glasses again though. He said once you get to 45 all bets are off.
Got similar advice (got lasik around 40). But sounds like usually the concern is for near sighted problems, so cheap reading glasses are all that's needed and not all the time glasses

Yup, I got almost 20 years of perfect vision from lasik (both eyes corrected for poor distance vision), then my near vision started to go downhill right around age 45. Now I need reading glasses, which is probably just part of the standard aging process. I still consider Lasik as the best money I've ever spent.

We have come so far so quickly.  I have hated the Cowboys since I was old enough to understand my uncles’ commands to do so. They have been in the upper echelons for ages.  In contrast 7 years ago no one outside of KC knew we existed, apart from loyal Melissa Etheridge fans.

Yup, most of this is just a factor of the number of times people tweet about the teams. Ex. I doubt the Jags are one of the NFL's most beloved teams, just one of the least talked about. It'd be interesting to see a ranking by proportion of negative opinions /total tweets.

This is probably the least midwesterny idea ever posted, but SD certainly will have a much better aging process than the rest of us.

very cool video of a mountain lion sighting in daylight near Brewster (NW KS):

Lucky to get that video!
Somebody was showing me a trailcam video today that he claimed was a mountain lion. Your video confirms that what my friend saw was a fox.

So this is probably buried in the thread somewhere, but what is the most white-midwesterny dish to take to a pot luck?
Specifically, it's supposed to be a pot luck where people bring things related to their heritage. I'm thinking velveeta nacho sauce (velveeta + rotel + cream of mushroom soup).

scared to ask what Oregon represents

Also Alaska and Hawaii

Nothing more than = never visited (also includes Rhode Island). Eventually, I will green those 4, whenever I get there (I’m a 50 state bucket list guy).

It's remarkable how many states you have visited but somehow California isn't one of them. Self imposed?

I’ve been to California a couple times, for a couple conferences with boring colleagues, and one time to visit a friend who doesn’t drink, so I have not been drunk in CA. No boycott, just haven’t had the opportunity.
