Post by: yoga-like_abana on February 12, 2010, 02:18:30 PM
What are some of your favorite beers and/or mixed drinks. (don't say coors or some crap like that)
Just started expanding on my beers and am loving this beer called Purple Haze its a rasperry wheat, yeah I know but it tastes good. Mixed drinks I always do crown and coke or something like that.

That's some good stuff.  I can hook you up with some Abita Purple Haze if you ever hit NOLA for a CajunPak.

Been drinking Leinenkugel lately.  Kind of my compromise between drinking assbeer and sliceofheavenbeer.

this thread is right up my alley (and I'm not talking about O'Malley's)

vodka:  ketel one.  i drink it with soda, no fruit.  i also drink it in white russians w/ kahlua.

gin:  hendrick's.  it tastes like cucumber.  i drink it with tonic and with or without cucumber.  awesome.

rum:  pyrat.  i drink it in my D&S's, but they're a warm weather drink.  nothing like sitting on the couch with an ice cold D&S in the summer time and watching the Grenkie pitch a gem.

beer:  sam adams.  sol - only in the summer time.  broken arrow pale ale from new belgium is good.  newcastle.  i don't drink much beer though.

wine:  love wine and drink a lot and collect wine a lot.  reds mostly in the cooler months, whites when its warm.  prefer wines with high tanin counts.   cain five is my favorite but it's $$ and saved for special occasies.  there's some really good meritages that i enjoy and it's one of them.

scotch:  meh, i'm kinda over it.  might drink it once a year now-  balvenie double wood, 10 year.

Sam Adams Cherry Wheat - Not much of a fruit flavor, very subtle and very good.  Also very easy to find.

Melbourne Bro's Strawberry Ale (hard time finding it and it is $5/bottle) - best fruit beer I have found

Pyramid Apricot Ale: Have to go to a Red X or Lucas type store to find.  Not a strong fruit flavor, very good.

The OP was about fruit beer.  I know that the question wasn't limited to fruit beer.  Thought I would stay close to what was mentioned as an example in the OP.

Non-Fruit:  Can't beat Boulevard's UnFiltered Wheat.  I have tried and tried.  There simply isn't a better wheat.

If you like Corona, try Modelo Especial.  About $1more/6'er.  Not necessarily better, but different and very good.

MX beer is my favorite.

Sol is also good.  Kind of like the MX version of Bud Light.

You're welcome.

Seriously, you guys should try this stuff.  Very smooth, but unlike crap like Keystone, with a good beer flavor.  Made by a microbrew in Idaho Springs, CO.  Tried it several years ago but hadn't been out there since.  Long had I dreamed of trying it again.  Didn't think you could get it around here, but then I found it in a liquor store in, of all places, Beloit.  Bought all 4 bottles they had.  Couldn't wait to get back home and order me a case.

Nice, My roommate and I used to go to Dean Liquor (before he started raping people) and you could pick any six beers for like 7 or 8 bucks.  We pretty much drank every kind of beer he had one summer and kept putting off the Chili one.  Finally got it and it tasted just like I imagined a chili beer would.   :barf:

Prob drink Guiness most of the time.  Love the Sam Adams Seasonals.  Pretty much like all beer.

Bud heavy cans still my fave. Just taste like lawn work and high school parties in pastures (in a good way).

Love UFO and Magic Hat Hefeweizen though.

Also drink a lot of Dogfish Head now that I'm on the east coast.

For hard liquor, I exclusively drink Knob Creek. On the rocks. eff anyone who calls me a snob, it's fantastic (and I happen to know for a fact that it's the whiskey of choice of the Obama administration, FWIW).

Wine = sangria for me. Former bartender gave me kick-ass, super simple/obvious recipe that is popular-music-wonderful in a Bud Light way.

And mimosas. OMG, mimosas.

corona is absolute crap (so is modelo especial).  so is sol.  so is carta blanca.  so is tecate.  if you drink that crap, keep it quiet so smarter people don't find out and lol @ you.
I like Bohemia, Dos Equis Amber, and Negra Modelo.

It's even better when you are in Matamoros and drinking 5 at a time while only spending $2.  Can't beat it with a stick.

I had the Abita Purple Haze las time I was in New Orleans. Pretty good. WRFF you aren't by chance an attorney are you?

You're welcome.

Seriously, you guys should try this stuff.  Very smooth, but unlike crap like Keystone, with a good beer flavor.  Made by a microbrew in Idaho Springs, CO.  Tried it several years ago but hadn't been out there since.  Long had I dreamed of trying it again.  Didn't think you could get it around here, but then I found it in a liquor store in, of all places, Beloit.  Bought all 4 bottles they had.  Couldn't wait to get back home and order me a case.
Where would one find this in T-Town?

Stella, Smithwicks, Newcastle are my favs.  Stella and Smithwicks have to be on tap.  Love it when I walk into a place and I see Smithwicks on tap.  I always order it just because its rare enough that it must be taken advantage of.  Stella is good for a really light beer that can contribute to a night of heavy drinking and still taste fantastic.  I had a Grolsh Light bottle once and thought it tasted like a Stella draft.  No idea if it really does because I was about 90% wasted.  Havent found the Grolsh light since, so if someone can shed some light on this, TIA

Forgot about but had one last night, Long Island Ice Teas, gods gift to my taste buds.

Can you make your own? For all my sarcasm on pissclams/Chingon threads, I'm a hilariously good cook. But I can't make myself a decent LIIT, and it infuriates me.

Right there with you.  I can cook like crazy, but can't make a LIIT taste like anything but straight booze.  Love them when I am out, but do nothing but waste good liquor when at making them at home.  I have tried at least 6 recipes too.

Would love if anyone had a sure thing recipe.

No, and I've actually tried a couple of times to replicate it.  :frown: And the premade ones are not very good either.

Yours, or one you pulled from Google?

I am going to go out on a limb here, but I bet it tastes like ass if you make it at home.

Mixed-drink App.

I personally like the LIIT's with a hint of orange.  Best one I ever had was at Paradisus Resort in Cancun.

Amazing.  :drink:

secret to LIIT is to use a decent sweet and sour or lemonade that can handle the large amount of booze in the drink.  as a former bartender (in aggieville), i know this.

Question for the former bartenders and so forth...

Can you recommend a beer that gets you real good and drunk but does NOT induce you to yell at old people at sporting events?  TIA.

That's a trick question if I have ever read one before.

I'm mainly just a beer guy now....

Schlitz - If you are used to drinking bud, coors etc. make this your new go-to beer, perfect for summer, watching games etc.  and better tasting than most macro swill.  This or Boulevard Pils are my usual buys.

Also like anything from Boulevard smokestack, especially wheat-wine,
rogue chocolate stout
odell ipa (as mentioned earlier is on tap at RAB)
Anything from Sam SMith
Guiness extra stout (none of that draught crap with the nitro ball and not from the bar)
Bully porter
Spaten Optimator
too many to list really

i love beer.

Oh yeah also for you cider lovers....  Take some cider and simmer it with some dark rum rough ridin' incred and will get you hammered great for winter
