What would you guys like to see cut? I vote for transportation.

Cuts across the board to 2005 levels

Agreed. The use of the Keynsian multiplier in transportation calculations has run amok.
Then let's chop down KPERS.
-
I like to see a farmer pay at least the same amount of property taxes on 640 acres of land as I do on my <1 acre lot in JoCo.
-
Then let's chop down KPERS.
Chop it completley? If so, what should replace it?
-
Just take out some bonds of indebtedness and call it good.

The state is not allowed to do that.

You want to RAISE TAXES??? :horrorsurprise:

Lies.

Tax jtksu for every post he makes on goEMAW. No cuts necessary.

401(k)s, Roth IRAs, Roth 401(k)s. The state already has a deferred compensation program in place.
The long term disability portion is nice, but I'd get one of those on my own as well.

Wow, what a dumb, terrible idea.

In case you haven't noticed, over the past 20 years pensions across the country have died in favor of these other plans. Ponzi schemes are a bad way to run a retirement plan. Let me opt out of KPERS and I'll do much better with my 4.5%.
-
KPERS is not a retirement plan. Maybe it was 20 years ago but not now.

Never was.
First there were private pensions, followed by Social Security, then 401(a) (then (k)). The 401(a) was essentially the government's answer to the private pension. When the 401(k) was introduced it was supposed to be a supplement to a pension and Social Security for retirement. Basically you could easily maintain your standard of living with your company's pension (or government), where were usually funded through forced contributions or deferred income, Social Security and what you contributed to your 401(k).
None of the three were ever meant to be a retirement plan.
That's the main reason why I have no qualms about cutting Social Security or things like government pensions. And when talking KPERS, it needs some slight modifications to make it solvent for Tier 1. Tier 2 has done quite a bit to make KPERS solvent in the distant future with increased contributions and points required. Tier 1 will have to reduce benefits and possibly increase contributions, though not in a drastic way.
-
The vast majority would not actually save it though and would be in terrible shape when they are old.
-
KPERS shot themselves in the foot a couple years ago. Now it only takes 5 years to get vested, rather than 10. That greatly increases the number of people that will receive permanent payouts and benefits on down the road.

Social Security. Good enough for the private sector, good enough for the government. :users:
-
Private sector stopped offering retirement plans? Weird.

Where did anyone say that?

Man you a dumb son of a bitch.
