I have to admit I am torn on who to vote for in this race because I like both of these guys a lot. It is a rare phenomenon in politics to have to decide between two outstanding candidates such as this, and it pains me that I can't vote for both of them. But I guess that's a good problem to have, especially since the winner of this primary will likely be the de facto winner of the general election in November and very well could occupy this senate seat for the rest of their career. There is virtually no substantive difference between the two in terms of their stance on the issues and voting records. Tiahrt is viewed more as a "movement" conservative and Moran more as an "establishment" republican. In reality, they are not far apart. I just hope the people that fill their respective vacated house seats are half as good as these guys were. Any compelling reasons for me to vote for one over the other? (I honestly have not made up my mind yet.)

one is a major doucher and the other pretty cool... and i like moran, he came to my poly sci class with flinchbaugh and seemed like a cool dude... and we share alot of the same views....

VOTE MORAN
The vast majority of currently elected politicians seem like cool people. It's almost a requirement to win an election. Sadly that's one of the big qualifications to how people vote. I'd like to strangle the PR person that came up with the talking point of "he a candidate the average voter could sit down and have a beer with." They act like that's a good thing.
This is not to single you out since you know Moran's views and they align with your own. Having talked with both, Tiahrt is very personable as well.
I think Moran wins the Senate seat mainly because of his previous House post though. The population dynamics are about the same in the 1st and 4th districts but the 1st incorporates 69 counties that gave Moran an early advantage in campaigning statewide, something he already did. Also, Moran had loads of campaign cash saved up from never really being challenged.
I'm not sure Tiahrt ever ventured too far away from Wichita while in the House, and he really hasn't done much to improve his name recognition outside the major cities in Kansas.
Either one will be an improvement over our next Governor though.

For the record, Palin has endorsed Tiahrt. Of course, I would view that as a positive rather than a negative like you would. I admire Palin in lots of ways, particularly her stance on right to life issues.

TOPEKA, Kan. - A former manager of Kansas Rep. Jerry Moran's campaign for the U.S. Senate publicly endorsed his main rival Sunday, saying Moran is unsure of his beliefs and not "instinctively conservative."
Moran's spokesman said ex-campaign manager Paul Moore is disgruntled and described Moore's open letter to fellow Republicans as a trick from GOP rival and fellow Rep. Todd Tiahrt's campaign.
Moore provided a copy of his letter to The Associated Press and sent it to the Tiahrt campaign. He told AP he wrote it with "entirely no input from any other source."
He was Moran's campaign manager from February through mid-April, though campaign finance records show he remained on the payroll through May. He said he was forced out, without elaborating.
"To my surprise, Jerry Moran winced at the frequent use of the words 'conservative' or 'pro-life' to portray himself out of fear he might offend moderate or pro-choice voters," Moore wrote in his letter.
Moore added: "He ultimately relented to the political realities and has thoroughly advertised himself as 'pro-life' and 'conservative' to describe who he needed to become to get elected."
Moran and Tiahrt have been actively courting GOP conservatives ahead of the state's Aug. 3 primary. Moran's campaign has said repeatedly that Tiahrt's attempts to question whether Moran is a true conservative show Tiahrt is significantly behind.

In this case, ‘moderate’ is just meant to describe the candidate that is the tiniest bit less conservative than the ‘conservative’ candidate. The NRO’s Kathryn Jean Lopez had to resort to differences in facial expressions to differentiate Moran from the ‘conservative’ Rep. Todd Tiahrt.
So they're basically indistinguishable, but the fact that the Palin and Tea Party-endorsed candidate lost makes me :) a little.
