Title: Movie Opinion Thread
Post by: 'taterblast on July 07, 2010, 11:34:11 AM
basically a thread to say what movies you watched recently and your opinion, and if you recommend people seeing it. (NO SPOILER ALERTS)

The Messenger
really fracking depressing, basically it's about the guys in the military who have to tell families their soldier is dead. some disturbing/sad scenes, one decent sex scene. woody harrelson is funny in it, basically a depressed alcoholic who doesn't have many friends. rent it if you're in the "serious movie that will give me perspective" mood. was a good movie, overall.

Youth In Revolt
i rented this because a friend wanted to see it, and i had my doubts. it seemed like one of those alternative comedies that you had to be kind of smart to understand/like, in a different kind of way. i was right, kind of. but luckily, i'm a pretty smart guy so i fracking loved this movie. his alter ego francois was cracking me up the entire time. galifianakis didn't have as big a part as i would have liked, but it was okay. laughed pretty hard at the movie. enjoyed it. not sure if i'll ever watch it again, but i have a general positive outlook toward it.

youth in revolt was alright, worth the hour and a half.  have you seen The 41-Year-Old Virgin Who Knocked Up Sarah Marshall and Felt Superbad About It.  I am sure it sucks a$$, most likely like the Scary Movie series.

Watched Unthinkable this weekend with Sammy Jackson.  Thought it was a pretty dec suspense movie.

almost rented this a couple nights ago, but went with this instead:

Edge of Darkness
good flick. if you truly have a problem with gibson's hate for jews, then gtfoomf. i don't care about that. i only care about the movie. intense film, had some trouble understanding the english guy, but overall great acting. highly recommended. won't change your life, but you won't be mad about watching it.
(https://goemaw.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.filmofilia.com%2Fwp-content%2Fuploads%2F2009%2F10%2Fedge_of_darkness.jpg&hash=7f1705d37d9bda13ee77c3833d52345e9428d6ba)

Invictus
i was pretty much 'meh' about this movie from the beginning. it's about rugby, which i know nothing about. i knew morgan freeman was gonna kick ass, as usual. matt damon's okay. but it seemed like one of those sports movies that was gonna seem too fake to be likable. and i was correct. i never knew what was going on in the rugby games, and the interaction between the players in the locker room was too fake and terribly acted to get excited about. sure, the parts of the film that highlighted the fact that people were becoming less racist and getting along with each other were priceless, and i had chills and whatever because of it, but the movie as a whole was incredibly forgettable.

Toy Story 3 in 3D

The movie was o.k. but not as good as the first 2.  Was a little dark and sad for a disney movie in my opinion, my 3 year old wanted to leave because it made him sad.  The 3D kind of sucked, no real cool effects, it really didn't add anything to the movie.  It would be worth renting I was a little disapointed with the theater experience.

I've been obsessed with watching seasons of Dexter lately

I've refused to go to any movie with Ben Affleck (or John Travolta but that's off topic) since Good Will Hunting.  He is truly one of the worst actors of all time, in addition to being one of the biggest douche bags on the planet.

I this movie good enough to let all that go?  The previews look pretty awesome, but then I see his smug stupid face and just forget about it.

See this. From Christopher Nolan (The Dark Knight, Memento) in 1996. It's only an hour and ten minutes and pretty cheaply made, but it's awesome. Not to mention extremely British and elite, you'll be the only one of your friends to have seen it.

this was wonderful, but - please, a sex scene w/o full frontal?

OK, I'm watching The Town tonight (tomorrow Brothers). Affleck has put up some stinkers - IMO, nothing has been as good as Good Will Hunting - Robin Williams was unreal in that flick.

Went to Redbox and grabbed Splice - I thought it might be decent as it had Adrian Brody in it, [redacted] was I wrong. I began losing patience within about 20 min and overall was nearly as bad as any of the Police Acadamy sequels.

Also watched Winter's Bone - pretty solid indie flick. Paints a vivid image of southern MO - what a rough ridin' shithole that place is.

Gone Baby Gone had a good story but awful character development.  And for me to go "these characters have absolutely no depth" means it had to stand out pretty badly.  Really kept it from being a much better movie (still good though)

you get to see Eve Mendez's tit don't you?

Eva Mendes is not in Gone Baby Gone.  You are most likely thinking of We Own the Night.

It was very good, I agree,  Definitely worth renting/watching...which should be the point of these rough ridin' threads.  HOWEVER, the final gun fight could have been so much better (e.g. the one in Heat).  Still, worth it.

I saw True Grit tonight.  Damon and Bridges were a lot of fun to watch.  I was expecting more of a shoot'em up movie than it turned out to be, but that's okay, and in hindsight, I shouldn't have gone in expecting a "Tombstone"-like movie.  True Grit did it's own thing.  I hadn't seen the original, but the new one definitely had an old timey western feel to it.

What aspect of tangled, exactly, did you think was superior to Despicable Me?

I thought that the "jokes" in Tangled were beyond hokey, and musical numbers (apart from the Goons number) were not just bad, but terrible, relative to past singing Disney movies.

The West Warren IMAX is pretty damn nice, although I think it would have been better in the long-term to build the facility downtown.  I'm sure that for many of you IMAX theaters are old hat, but it was a first time (unless you count the cosmosphere) and was definitely something to remember.

I got there a bit too close to showtime, however, and had difficulty finding good seats.  It was basically a choice between the side, the top, or the very bottom.  In the end we decided to take a couple seats dead center in the very top row.  From that vantage point the picture and sound were great even if the picture wasn't "larger than life" as it surely would have been if I had managed to grab seats in a lower row. At one point I had to get up and use the restroom.  On my return I watched for a few minutes down in the extreme front, and 60 foot screen was incredible and still nearly crystal clear.  There was a bit of a scaling problem from that vantage point, but it was pretty cool.  I returned to my original seats.

The movie itself was supremely stunning, at least visually.  The story itself was compelling enough but not anything really noteworthy.  Bridges and the Bowie clone both gave really good performances and the rest of the cast didn't detract from the real star of the show, the visual amusement park.  The action, the color, the clarity, it was all spectacular even from the very top row.

I would definitely recommend and I may see it again myself.

BTW, it is nice seeing Jeff Bridges getting the credit I've always thought he deserved after all these years.

Invictus
i was pretty much 'meh' about this movie from the beginning. it's about rugby, which i know nothing about. i knew morgan freeman was gonna kick ass, as usual. matt damon's okay. but it seemed like one of those sports movies that was gonna seem too fake to be likable. and i was correct. i never knew what was going on in the rugby games, and the interaction between the players in the locker room was too fake and terribly acted to get excited about. sure, the parts of the film that highlighted the fact that people were becoming less racist and getting along with each other were priceless, and i had chills and whatever because of it, but the movie as a whole was incredibly forgettable.
(https://goemaw.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ffoolishblatherings.files.wordpress.com%2F2009%2F11%2Finvictus-movie-poster-matt-damon.jpg&hash=c16afd1860b4e8f0b8c256d4cc19cae45135db5b)

Mel doesn't hate Jews.  He just calls them on their bullshit.  There's a difference.  And Edge of Darkness is pure D crap.  Boring as hell.  Rent the British miniseries on which it's based on Netflix--much better.

Invictus had to leave a lot out from the book on which it was based.  If you don't get rugby, maybe you better read up on it or watch a few games on ESPN3.  Rugby is the transition sport between soccer and American football.  It's pretty much that gray area between a bunch of pussies kicking a ball around like puppies (soccer) and a bunch of overpaid crybabies doing stupid end-zone dances (football).  Rugby is like the one path in Buddhism between two extremes.  It is a special world where only men are allowed to play.  Grow a pair and love the game.

Didn't know if this was worthy of its own thread, but it doesn't quite fit here because I don't have an opinion yet. But the characters/actors for "The Dark Knight Rises" have been announced:

Saw Social Network the other day, also. Pretty good movie and it's pretty true (or at least from that Eduardo dude's POV) or so I hear.

i didn't realize that little girls in the 1800s couldn't be annoying.   :users:
the narration at the beginning killed it for me during what could have been a really suspenseful, climatic part of the movie.  otherwise good.

Some old shirt-tuck that sat next to me making comments the entire movie kinda ruined it for me. I wanted to wait until it came out on blu-ray but the wife had others ideas.

I think that is the point of the film.  My big bro spent some time in that valley and thought out loud (to me after several beers) that until we quit worrying about dead cows, we will not be able to neutralize, but I digress.

Good movie about seeing one of your boys die in front of you.  mods move to politics thread.

Ya, it's a losing proposition.   The movie was good because it highlighted what we need to know, and that's that the dudes fighting are sacrificing a great deal, and the plan is completely mumped and unwinnable.

That's the coolest part about it though is that it's so damn real. And wow the camera men must have huge balls

Watched Sanctom on Saturday night.  Good movie, but was worse than any horror film for me.  I watching in 2D, can't imagine seeing it in 3D probably would be pretty good but It would have freaked me out.

The movies I saw this weekend:

King's Speech - Thought it could have been absolutely epic if they would have focused on his role of king more than just his inability to speak publicly. I understand how difficult it would have been to balance that line, but it was that close. I have it as 3rd best this year.

Winter's Bone - Pretty obvious that the only reason it was up for Best Picture is to fulfill the allotted "Independent Film" spot. Not too great of acting.

127 Hours - Don't know how it was so emotional and entertaining when just about the whole thing is Franco being stuck in the canyon. Franco did incredible considering he didn't have anyone to feed off of besides himself.

The Fighter - Thought it was a pretty interesting concept for a movie. It wouldn't be up for Best Picture if it wasn't for Christian Bale. I know he is only up for Best Supporting Actor, but it was the best acting performance of the year.

Absolutely amazing film/performance.  One of those "this film is about what?!"-type deals, but done really well.  Takes you from wanting to throw up one minute to wanting to cry the next.  Soundtrack is pretty sweet, too.

I just saw "The Eagle" today.

I thought I was going to give it a C grade, but I was actually surprised enough to give it a B...dare I say B +.

It's no Gladiator, but it's a very entertaining film and I highly recommend it to anyone who's interested in Historical movies. Some very good action in it as well.

We've been on a horror flick spree lately and I have 3 from redbox:

Let Me In - thought I was going to despise, but actually enjoyed it. Not a classic, but good way to fill a rainy afternoon.

Case 39 - if you can get beyond Renee Zelwigger's weird squinty eye thing, this one had a little suspense thing going on. Not bad.

Last Exorcism - cool concept, ending left mr COMPLETELY flat, DO NOT waste the dollar. Unlike The Exorcist, this one wasn't even disturbing at any level. The Exorcist BTW, one of the scariest movies to this day IMO.
