SkinnyBenny is our expert but as a non resident, monthly visitor to New Orleans I'm here to offer hot tips and answer questions
Tip 1, Lafitte's purple drink
-
If you want to feel like you're at the Lou, go to Snake & Jake's Christmas Club Lounge. 24/7 bar that once had a possum fall through the ceiling.
-
Tip 2, for oysters in French Quarter, skip Acme line, stand in Felix's line across the street.

-
Get a hamburger at Port of call and a loaded baked. Do it!

Commander’s Palace
Arabella Casa Di Pasta

Commander's is fancy and expensive and in the Garden District. Lotsa people like it.
Arabella Casa di Pasta is one of my favorites and I'm not surprised my IRL best friend Dax recommended it because he has great taste just like me. Very casual, unpretentious funky sci-fi dork decor, good place to take a group of friends to kick off the night. Good food, good bar. Highly recommend.
My favorite restaurant in the city is Adolfo's on Frenchman Street above the Apple Barrel bar. Expensive and amazing but not super pretentious either. All the art on the walls looks like it's homemade as hell, and that's because Adolfo went dumpster diving behind the Tulane art building for decor. Toilet seat is way too big for the toilet it's on. It makes no sense and is hilarious. Everybody loves the ocean sauce. They discontinued the Chicken Vincent after covid, which is a bummer because it's the best meal I've ever had. Was devastated.
-
SkiBe what are the top 3 patisseries b/c i intend to do some damage
-
Tip 3 (maybe contested) - skip Cafe Du Monde or just get it to go. Since covid it's not quite same service and you can get good beignets other places.
-
Cafe is an overrated tourist trap if you ask me.
-
It's good to do once and the beignets are really good.
BAC, you need to go to La Boulengerie. But get there kinda earlier in the morning because it gets picked over AF
-
Should I bring my bullet proof vest I got for my stay in deep ellum?

^tysm. Also last time i was there i went to Shaya and got the lamb shank and if i'm being completely honest i'm not sure a single day has gone by that i haven't thought about it

Has anyone been to a game in the Superdome? I bet it's amaze IRL

Kinda a dump TBH

Went in 2020 when LSU beat Clemson in the Natty. It is pretty rough-ridin awesome. Very loud. If they have the tailgate town thing it was fun to go to. Lots of stuff to do with kiddos too. But the stadium is old-ish.
-
The tailgate town will be open but it opens at 9:00AM for an 11:00 kickoff
-

I went to a motorcycle show in it.

No matter what bar\restaurant you go to, always get a cocktail to go on your way out!

Now THAT is a pro tip. Thank you.

Great one. Almost every place will have plastic cups at the door for transferring any cocktails into as well.

If you don't want to seem like a tourist n00b punk buster, ask for a go cup and call it a go cup.

the kstate belt and seed hat might give it away.

Do they serve lean at the restaurants/bars?

This is a good heads up! We went there in March and it didn't disappoint.

If you want to do a streetcar ride for cheap sightseeing, get on the green one and go up and back down St. Charles, not the red one that goes up and back down Canal/Carrollton.
Green one will take you to Tulane's campus (and Loyola, which is right next door). Go do that. The campuses are sweet, and Tulane's stade situ is pretty unique. New, small, strange football stadium, incredibly old but charming tiny basketball gym, and a pretty sweet college baseball stade. Also, the front entrances of Tulane/Loyola are right across St. Charles from Audubon Park, which is glorious. (Nature and/or Family fun alert!)

the RTA app is kind of crap but it's easier than having to buy a ticket when you board.

Does the Superdome's ventilation system have the capacity to remove the stench of Alabama fans or are we going to be marinating in that slop for 4 hours?

Skinben if you made an app that would take you on stade tours in diff cities and it's like interactive and junk and shows the history of the different stades, I would download the app and upgrade to the paid version so no ads and extra stade trivia and vids and junk. Like you can go on virtual tours but also IRL tours when you're there IRL
Isn't that a good idea?
-
Name of the app:
SB Stade Review
Get a beta version that is just Manhattan KS and New Orleans, build from there. I'll help you with KC stuff. On the KC part it will take you to where Municipal Stade was and tell you about Satchel Paige and when the Beatles played there. Also on the KC one if you go to Municipal Auditorium you can learn about all the Final Fours played there.
-
This idea is so good. Imagine our first roadie to Cincinnati, what the heck are you gonna do in that town? Open up SB Stade Tour on your device and take a walking tour of some stades. Bam, that's a delightful afternoon.
-
Lunch: Willie Mae's for the best fried chicken ever.
Dinner: Cochon for all sorts of good food options.
After Dinner: Three Muses on Frenchman is an under-the-radar place with some interesting fusion food and good (and not overwhelming) live music.
-
Any Donald Link restaurant is phenomenal:
Whole woodfired fish at Peche
Southern food at Cochon (a little fancy)
Cochon Buther is very casual and one of my fav NOLA spots.
Toup's Meatery was a revelation on my last trip. If they still have the turkey neck, you will not regret ordering it.
If you're trying for Commander's Palace fancy brunch, you prob need to reserve now. It was a fun experience but if you're on the fence about it, it's probably not worth it.
-
Coop's chicken is also good and in the quarter.
If you get a chance to see Andre Lovett - his voice is unique and he does not disappoint
https://www.facebook.com/andre.lovett.146
-
Yeah I was going to post about Peche as well for non-cajun specific restaurants to try. Chemin a la Mer is always amazing. Haven't been to Miss River but heard great things. Cochon was probably the least favorite of his but I'm not a big "meat" guy.

For the fine dining crowd, Antoine's is fantastic.

Felix is better than Acme anyway.

For those of you going, please be sure to speak very slow and loud to any Alabama University Pachyderm fans. I saw a very real and not fake statistic that 99.9459598% of their fans are not graduates of high school let alone THE Alabama University. This may be the first time they have seen an indoor toilet or running water for that matter. Just be kind and give them your spent crawfish heads on your way back to the Ritz or the Royal Sonesta.

Holy crap. A younger Pete would have died at the Sugar Bowl.

I don’t think that’s true anymore. In my prep for my October trip I downloaded the RTA app & watched it some, but then they released a new app called Le Pass. We bought/used our Jazzy Passes on that & it worked a lot better. Going back/forth between the Jazzy Pass screen, Map & line selection was the only glitchy thing. I remember just closing & re-opening the app instead of trying to back out back to the main screen. After a couple times getting used to that, it was pretty easy to use. The streetcar/tracking on the map was far superior on Le Pass compared to the RTA app.
-

if goEMAW organizes a parade pak I will most definitely get my ass to new orleans
-
If you don't want to seem like a tourist n00b punk buster, ask for a go cup and call it a go cup.
As a longtime Madri Gras going friend told me, you can do nearly anything in the French Quarter but hit the streets with glass container. That'll get you arrested in a blink.
-
Am I crazy for considering making a pit stop (already traveling from FL to WA) with a 6yo in tow for this game and the festivities? Thinking about spending one night there, I guess - maybe the 30th.
-
I'm glad to know about the French donuts or whatever, but who has a number for a reputable coke dealer in the area?
-

Not at all. Daytime in FQ is perfectly tame. There are other things to do besides drink. I'm spending three nights in town for the game and I don't drink.
-
guys did you like my app idea
-
It was pretty good but honestly if I had a stade app, its features would be less about the stade's history and more about how the new lights they put in kinda remind me of alien bugs from Men In Black.
-

That too, is a really good idea for an app

So there are also tons of non-booze things to do in New Orleans if you want to bring the kids or if you are sobes mcgrobes.
A) After raising my seven beautiful children in New Orleans for a span of the last 22 years, I have the playground scene on lock, AMA
B) The parks here are increds and you can take the streetcar to both of te best ones. Audubon Park is on St. Charles across from Tulane and Loyola, and is accessible by the green streetcar line. Perfect for an easy naturey walk. The red streetcar line accesses City Park, which is huge and has tons of gorgeous scenery AND a Cafe du Monde AND a bunch of sweet playgrounds AND an old stade where The Beatles once played AND an amaze nighttime Christmas display called Christmas in the Oaks.
C) Trampoline parks. You may be surprised to learn that for a city as small as New Orleans, there are three in the greater NOLA area
-
Unless you just really really like to get views from high elevations, I'd skip the Vue New Orleans. Maybe kids would like it as they have interactive things and history of new Orleans stuff but didn't do much for me
-
there is a Cafe du Monde in MSY if you think you absolutely have to have it, almost no line usually.
-
FYI The National World War 2 museum will be open on new years day. When I was in NawLeans 4 years ago I decided to spend an afternoon there to check it out and barely got through half the museum in 4 hours, its incredible if you are into WW2 stuff.
Will definitely be going again on NYD wearing a KSU KATZ 2022 Sugar Bowl champs T-Shirt.

I had the same experience. Felt like I was there most of the day, but ended up just walking through the last half because there was just too much to take in.
-
The WWII museum is amazing. Go, and do as much of it as you can. I recommend blocking off minimum 4 hours if not 6. Sounds insane but if you’re into history it’s worth it. I like to start with the 4-D experience narrated by Tom Hanks to lay a bse. I haven’t been in a few years to see the new addition, but at least a few years ago, this movie is almost entirely Pacific theater. So if you’re expecting a bunch of Holocaust and Normandy’y stuff, it’s not that. I mean sure that makes a dece appearance, but it’s heavy on Pacific.
-
Felipe's isn't much on the inside but they make s good margarita (remember the to go tip). It's in the FQ towards the river and will be very close if you to the parade
-
Can’t speak to their margs but their food is trash.
-
Everyone should go to the WW2 museum - it's an amazing facility.
But... their approach to telling what happened is very rah-rah America and I found that a bit off-putting. I was there a few weeks ago (after having not been for about 10 years when they were transitioning from being the D-Day museum) and I'm walking by a video in one of the galleries and the hyped-up narrator says something like, "And then the American WW2 aces gunned down the Japanese and added more kills to their tallies!" This wasn't an old timey video - it was done when they did the expansion in the last few years and was too over the top. I immediately thought of Team America ("America Eff Yeah!").
That, in a nutshell, is indicative of their approach to telling the WW2 story. It's a very deliberate choice and they have executed on that choice very well. But, it's a stark contrast to other museums - the WWI museum in KC or the newly renovated Truman Museum are good local examples - which take a more contemplative approach and even challenge/question many of the decisions made - both by the U.S. and other nations.
-
sounds about white
-
The WWI museum really is very cool.
-
Magazine st. is cool too if you're looking to get out of the quarter for a bit.
-
Can’t speak to their margs but their food is trash.
It looks like a badder chipotle.
Hard to find any good margaritas so maybe they aren't that great but when I am needing one that's the best I've found

But then again, I think everything cf3 does is great, not the least of which is his stade app.

I heard 3-4 different TCU fans say "You're not in Kansas anymore" to me during the game. I wonder if the barners are gonna throw that insult at us as well.

The proper response to this is “All we are is dust in the wind.”
-
Gone with the Wind came out 5 months after the Wizard of Oz. But to my knowledge when people say they are from Georgia you never hear people respond with “frankly my dear, I don’t give a damn”. But for whatever reason Kansas gets the distinction of 80+ year old blockbuster hit movie references.
-
Room prices are loosening up some if you haven't already gotten a non-refundable reservation. Sounds like it will continue going down a bit if you are a gambleCat

Pretty sure Harrahs New Orleans has 24/7 booze drinks as long as you’re gamboolin

So give ben ji some pro tips on what he should add to his schedule. Current plan is below
Friday the 30th - Land at MSY around 7, check into Hotel by Pat O'Briens then go out on the town for a bit but taking it easy.
Saturday the 31st - Wake up around 7-8am, eat some breakfast and start bar crawling towards the sugar bowl with the goal of reaching it around 11am(Any bars we should definitely stop at on the way between pat obriens and the super dome?). After game plans are to work our way back to the hotel and either take a nap or just keep boozing and go to bed at like 8pm on NYE.
Sunday the 1st - Going to the WWII museum from the late morning to afternoon ish. Afternoon is wide open so any plans here will do, maybe hit up Frenchmen street in the evening?
Monday the 2nd - Flying out around 3pm so if there if you have any suggestions for a quick mid morning activity I would appreciate it.

Here is my pro-tip having been to NO dozens of times including multiple bach parties, don't lie to your self with his kind of nonsense. Friday night, the Big Easy and you just landed....please.
-
The game kicks off at 11. I would highly recommend planning on getting to the Superdome early. It won't be sold out like a Saints game, but it will take a while to get in. Security is strict and also New Orleanians are never in any kind of a hurry...ever. Including security guards at big events. Also, there's a clear bag policy at the Superdome that they're adamant about, so if you're traveling with people bringing purses, make sure they know that in advance.
Champions Square is probably going to have something fun going on. That's the tailgate area adjacent to the Superdome. In fact according to the Sugar Bowl website, it appears they're calling it...Tailgate Town?? lolz.
https://allstatesugarbowl.org/sports/2022/4/6/tailgate-town
I'm going to try to get to Champions Square aka Tailgate Town aka Super End Zone Sugar Fun Zone probably around 9:30, maybe head into the stadium at 10:15. I'll have little kids with me though, so you could probably push it until 10:25, but I wouldn't go any later than that if seeing kickoff matters to you.

Yeah that was lol
By easy I mean as easy as I can take it my first night in Naw Leans. Hoping to be in bed by midnight ish
-
The game kicks off at 11.
For some reason I was thinking the game kicked off at 1130.
Does tailgate town serve booze drinks?
Yea I seriously doubt they’re actually kicking at noon, but I think that’s the official game time.
-
That game time is rough.
-
That game time is rough.
There is a legit reason a normal Sugar Bowl is the last big game of the night.
-
I'm actually glad the game is early in the day and not at 8 or 9pm, although I would prefer a 3pm kick.
The thought of going out all day then watching the katz dominate bama then having to walk back 1.3 miles to our hotel at midnight does not sound appetizing to old man ben ji.
-
So give ben ji some pro tips on what he should add to his schedule. Current plan is below
Friday the 30th - Land at MSY around 7, check into Hotel by Pat O'Briens then go out on the town for a bit but taking it easy.
Been addressed below about not being able to "take it easy" but walk downriver (right if staying same side as Pats) on Bourbon and go to Lafitte's. I've always had the best time there.
Saturday the 31st - Wake up around 7-8am, eat some breakfast and start bar crawling towards the sugar bowl with the goal of reaching it around 11am(Any bars we should definitely stop at on the way between pat obriens and the super dome?).
Erin Rose for their frozen iriish coffee. Old Absinthe House just because it feels old.
Monday the 2nd - Flying out around 3pm so if there if you have any suggestions for a quick mid morning activity I would appreciate it.
Jackson Square

Room prices are loosening up some if you haven't already gotten a non-refundable reservation. Sounds like it will continue going down a bit if you are a gambleCat
We haven't sold out of our allotment of 15,000 tickets, demand doesn't seem to be what anyone anticipated.
-
I mean half the stadium was for sale before the teams were announced, anybody that's been to more than one bowl game knows not to buy through the school.
Just changed my flights to go to the Sugar Bowl Gala on Thursday night! :blacktie:

I haven't ever been before a Sugar Bowl, but it's in New Orleans, so yes.

Those were secondary tickets and nearly all of them are still significantly higher than face value. The only seats under face are the shitty upper ends that are certain to be empty.

I have been reading about these guys and there are some things I can't make heads or tails of. Supposedly they are the crimson tide (whatever tf that means) but their mascot is an elephant. Elephants are gray, not crimson. Is the idea that they are a gang of carnies, traveling around with the circus? I guess maybe that makes sense. We are going to beat their carnie asses.
ya my wife has a crimson tide about once a month :Yuck:

So I don't know about specifics, but I think ticket sales are going about medium well at best. StubHub has a ton of upper deck seats and I was able to get garbage ones in a big block for relatively cheap in the K-State section. These seats appear to be part of what the K-State ticket office is selling for $105.
I got each ticket for about 40% that much. So is the K-State ticket office putting certain seats up for sale and hawking them on StubHub/SeatGeek but hoping that fans won't think to look there?
-
Which, all that is to say, if you're considering coming for the game but don't want to pay exorbitant prices, just go through StubHub. Be okay with garbage seats in the upper deck knowing you'll probably be able to move to better seats in the upper deck once the game starts.
Also go into it knowing that a lot of those seats in the upper deck end zone/horseshoe parts might say unobstructed view, but...they're obstructed. It's a unique stade but a lot of its sightlines are honestly terrible.

I don't know that K-State is selling through third parties but selling inventory at different price points through different channels is something hotels and airlines do regularly. It could make sense that younger people will buy on third parties and olds will buy through the ticket office and not shop price.

Yeah, if you want to get in the door, the secondary market is the best option for this event. If you care about where you're sitting, and want the best price for the best seats, you absolutely should get a ticket at face value.

Pretty sure Harrahs New Orleans has 24/7 booze drinks as long as you’re gamboolin
Hard to catch a $15 craps table there. They love $25 minimum.

The kstate beads are already nowhere to be found on bourbon. So either they pull them down to jack up prices when game is in town or they ran out.

Skinny Benny, is Angelo Brocato worth the hype? What about Tipitinas?
-
Brocato’s is great. Pretty much always a line out the door. can get there via the red streetcar that goes up Canal toward Carrollton. I always used to take WonderMeal there when he would come up for a visit and he loved their gelato and macarons. (WM! If you’re reading this, keep strong and stay on the straight and narrow in there so we can be back at Brocato’s in no time, my friend!)
Tipitina’s is legendary. Small to medium sized club that has had thousands of big acts through the years. There’s also a weird Rock-n-Jock style basketball goal mounted to the front of the balcony over the floor. I have no idea why, but I live it.
-
Skinny Benny, are there any speakeasy type bars that are hidden and require a secret password or knock to get in? I worked the google machine and found a few, but I figured if google knows about them, then there is likely to be too many people that know about them.

What are the NYE plans? Trying to decide if a party is worth it after a whole day of football/booze
I was having this exact conversation with my 90's series lady friend. My plan was bar crawl to the game, watch cats win, walk back to bourbon street to celebrate/watch the CFP and be in bed by 8-9pmish.
She was thinking we could take a nap that afternoon/evening then go out but I'm not sure that is going to work. It will definitely not work if we win since it will be shirts off shots on mode.
I also have no desire to deal with bourbon street on NYE around midnight.
-
You should only deal with Bourbon street by having one walk (one way, not back). Stop at Pat O’Briens, have a hurricane/drink or two. Then never go up/down Bourbon street again.
-

Exactly. Bourbon is fun anytime, no need for rocket fuel version of amateur night there.
Don't listen to Dax, Bourbon is fun, especially during the day. I make a walk down it every time I'm there.

Plenty of quarter that's not bourbon. If memory of watching NYE celebrations serves me accurately the fireworks and countdown is in Jackson Square.

Our hotel is right next to Pat O'Briens :surprised: so we will get the main strip on the way there then might take some streets 1-2 blocks off bourbon to get back after the game to catch some new bars.
At a Bachelor party in the the past we learned you only order ONE hurricane then move on. That amount of sugar/booze will wreck you.

Bourbon is great, especially if you've never been to NOLA. There's such a variety of different types of bars and restaurants. It's a very cool scene. When we all come back, y'all who aren't going with 15 rough ridin' kids, don't be ashamed to tell us about your tales from Bourbon and how much fun you had. Do the touristy crap, that's the point. Have a hurricane, have two hand grenades and get them in the plastic cups that look like hand grenades. Go to the Cat's Meow, my favorite bar in the world, and sing some karaoke. Go to one of the cheap walk up restaurants and eat some gator. If it's your thing, go to one of the seeming 10 hustler's strip clubs. Stop in to Krystal late night for a bag of knockoff White Castles, but more importantly for the fuckery that happens. Definitely go up past Bourbon and St. Ann and see a drag show. Do pop into the House of Voodoo.
Don't worry about being a tourist, your in rough ridin' New Orleans, watching your team in the rough ridin' sugar bowl, on rough ridin' new years eve. If you can't enjoy being a sloppy, fun loving, yankee tourist under these circumstances, when can you ever enjoy excess. Live it up gents. Leave the off the beaten path stuff for those of us who can't have a blast on Bourbon, or leave it for the next trip, or the trip after.
The next time I'm in NOLA, for a work convention in '24, I'll definitely be back to my hotel, the Crowne Plaza, right on the corner of Bourbon and Canal, ready for fuckery of my own. Last time I was there I had two, very pretty, sex workers follow me to my room, hoping for a good time. I wasn't into that much fuckery.
New Orleans is one of our greatest cities, enjoy it!

Bourbon is great. I mean it’s terrible and stupid, but like MIR said, that’s the point. And it will be crawling with Tater Grapes after the game and we’ll be able to taunt the 20 Alabama fans we see. I’ve done Bourbon 10,000 times when people come visit and it’s always at least a little but fun, even on night when I’m not into it. The gay bar section is a blast, the trashy decor of Tropical Isle is a blast, the cover bands incessantly playing Bon Jovi songs are a blast. It’s gross and trashy but it’s good fun. It will never be crawling with as many EMAWs as this NYE right after the game, so take advantage. I promise you will run into someone you know that you weren’t expecting to.

And 110% spot on. Expect the juxtaposition of a Hustler club to a sit-down restaurant to a walk-up bar to a tourist trinket storefront and just embrace the place.

So someone mentioned getting a pak going. Is anyone still interested in that? If so, which day?
Something that would be really easy would be this:
Friday, December 30, I’m planning on going to the Sugar Bowl parade at 2:30, then taking my kids to the pep rally at the Morial Convention Center. (I know, pep rallies are kinda lame but I’ll have my kids for that and they’ll be imto it. Plus, they serve booze drinks so not as terrible as most pep rallies?) Then after the pep rally, it’s pak time at Urban South?
Urban South is a great brewery in town and it’s a stone’s throw across a convention center parking lot and grass field from the concention center pep rally. I could ditch my kids between the pep rally and the pak and get a couple hours of good boozing in before calling it an earlyish night to save most of my rocket sauce for the game the next morning. www.urbansouth.com
Anyone interested in that? I know not everyone will get into town by then, so I’m open to alternatives. Or no pak at all; I know NOLA is a destination bowl trip and everyone has their own ideas of what they wanna do.
-
I'll have a group to "manage" at that point so can't commit fully and we may not do the pep rally.
Wonder what hall the pep rally is in.As you know that's a long MF'er. One place I thought of is Sidecar when you talked about doing it after the pep rally as it's pretty close depending on where it is but given I'm not saying I'm going don't listen to me.
-
That wouldn't be too bad, but if I went it would have to be later, like after dinner.
-
So someone mentioned getting a pak going.

Yeah, specifically in Hall F.
Sidecar is a good recommendo. Both that and Urban South are walkable from Hall F in the convention center, sidecar’s maybe a little closer and more walkable. I’d be down for either, but Sidecar seems like the play because that’s more accessible to where people would be coming from if they didn’t want to go to the pep rally. (Which would be understandable, since there’s so much else to do in NOLA.)
Honestly the game time is a drag because it means an early bedtime for a lot of us on the 30th. Could also be convinced to meet up somewhere after the game, or not at all. If there’a not a critical mass of gEers, I’d probably skip. I only have so much of a budget of kid-free time to spend in a short couple days, and I know I’ll want to blow a lot of that on NYE after the game. If there are a lot of people who are down, though, we could throw down and have the greatest pak since the Houlihan’s days.

Yeah the hall makes a big difference in that place given it stretches a half mile in width. Convention Center site says Hall F which is right at the interstate, about a mile walk from the end of the parade (2 miles from the beginning). Going to have some pissy old cat fans who try and walk to both.
Closer to SB bar spot!!
I had to edit my comments, I swore it said Hall H and then saw SB comment so looked at it again and corrected it. Still going to be a long haul for those walking cats who also bitch about walking 3 blocks anywhere. I'll probably skip the pep rally unless I'm told otherwise.

Yeah, on christmas eve I finally bought some tickets in the upper deck at the 50 yard line for $45 each. The ticket costs are minuscule compared to airfare/hotel for a couple of days.

Still hoping to get there in time for the gala on Thursday evening. Driving half way tomorrow. 13 total.
I was holding out hope going to bed last night that they would get most of it figured out today. Sounding like all week to figure out, flights on Thursday already being cancelled too. Still hoping to fly back on the 2nd.
-
What a clusterfuck. Southwest is a complete mess. They can't get equipment and crews repositioned till Saturday?
-
As someone who's made that drive over like 10 times, stay somewhere fun to split up the drive. My brother lives in Monroe, LA so we usually stay there, but we've stayed in Little Rock to split up that drive too. The problem is, the drive back after a 4 day binder. It's the longest drive of your life.

Add me to the most likely driving list. I don't fly out until Friday early morning. I will probably make my final decision by tomorrow night.

Stopping in Little Rock.

Supposed to be staying in Memphis tomorrow night, not loving that with the Liberty Bowl also tomorrow. Was going to try to push to get to Jackson, MS but they have a boil order :frown:

Glad we didn’t bother with airfare. Also just cancelled our refundable hotel last minute and booked a slight upgrade right next to it for $100 less. Thank goodness Bama fans are too poor to make the trip.
-
This is starting to feel like Cotton bowl vs. Arkansas. We think no other fans will be there then show up at the stadium and get Woo pig sooie'd everywhere I looked

I'm expecting Bama to try some late bullshit to avoid the game, like "oh the weathers's to brutal to travel" or "all us anti-vaxxers done got Covid." Any murmurs along those ines?

This would add another hour or 2 to your trip. I think most KC cats have casinos around them. Not sure that gambling itch is worth it to most people, plus Shreveport is a dump.
-
Two Questions
1. Backup plan is to drive if our flight gets cancelled. Our hotel is some small bougie place in the quarter and does not have parking. Where is a good/safe spot to park near the quarter/downtown? If we do have to drive down we probably won't go back to the car until we leave.
2. What sportsbars would you recommend in the French Quarter if I wanted to watch some CFP games after the katz win?

Everywhere in NO is practically a sports bar. I’d just go to Pat O Bryan’s after the game. Regroup with the squad. Watch the first half of the first playoff game and walk around to your next adventure at halftime.

Ok, cool. Just giving you a heads up tho, that casino in New Orleans is like a $25 minimum best for Blackjack. I can only imagine what the poker minimum would be. Stay away from Canal street.

It's rare that I gamble there. Stupid craps table minimum on the weekends. They were running four or five $50 tables and one $15 table at 10p last trip. Hard pass on that nonsense.

Bourbon st itself doesn't have any of what I'd call great sports bars (good seating lots of TV's sound, etc). Most will have a tv playing a game but not really focused on sports watching. Pats inside one of their rooms maybe does as wacky said . Should be able to duck in and out of them to find something. Sneaky petes, copper monkey , alibi have good tv setups. Look down on the bourbon cross streets for bars, those are the ones that are more like a traditional dive bar with TV's behind the bar.

A good regional (going national) sports bar chain is Walk-On’s. There’s one on Poydras near the CBD. the Cooper Vine next door is good.

American sports saloon at the north end of the quarter is p good if you're looking for a sports bar for some reason. Watched the 2020 afc championship game there upstairs

Cooter Browns is the best sports bar in New Orleans, but you'll need to leave downtown for it, so I'm sure no one wants to go there, but that's where I always go for American sports ball.

ben ji I'm supposed to fly out Friday early and change planes in Houston. Even if I get out of KC, I'm afraid I'll get stuck in Houston. regarding parking - this should go without saying public parking in any city but clean out your car. It maybe trash, empty bag, 82 cents in change to you, but it will get your window broke.
See you on Bourbon, shoving off.

this exact thing happened to me in january 2020 (flight delayed like 6 hours due to weather then canceled) so we rented a car and drove the whole way through the night. HUGE PRO TIP THAT I DID NOT FOLLOW is to make sure and split up the driving time among multiple people if you can. starting a long weekend in freaking new orleans on no sleep is the dumbest idea in a long list of dumb ideas that i've ever had. if you're renting a car, pay the extra whatever to have multiple drivers if it puts your mind at ease

1. Honestly you should find a parking garage that’ll let you keep it there overnight and just pony up for it. It’s way safer. Decent amount of smash and grabs in New Orleans. I wouldn’t leave it just out in the open on a street overnight, at least over Sugar Bowl/NYE.
2. Manning’s and Walk-On’s. There are some smaller places in the quarter but none are that great.

It’s great for tourney action, or huge games with local interest. The last few times I’ve gone there, though, it’s failed me because they haven’t been playing any game audio, just crap male genitals rock. But for Saints or LSU or March Madness, hell yeah.
-
I mean you can find tons of places in the quarter to watch the games, don’t get me wrong. There’ll probably just be an element of either Bon Jovi cover bands or club hit Nnn-Tss-Nnn-Tss-Nnn-Tss-Nnn-Tss playing in the background, too.

Bro…..I would not be rolling the dice like that. At least not without snorting a line of bee venom first for good luck.
I will also warn you all, the New Orleans airport baggage claim is a hot rough ridin' mess. Do your best to fit it all in a carry-on if you can. It will save you at least an hour.

yep. and when you get to new orleans, go to the airport to drop off your rental, and check in at the SW desk to let them know you will fly back if it's still on. since you would have skipped your outgoing flight (assuming it ever happened) they will assume you will not be on the return flight unless you tell them.

Is that a short term problem? I've never had baggage claim issues
I'm fully expecting to fly back Monday on swa.
-
It’s only a problem if the airport is busy. And it will be busy.
I haven’t ever had a lost bag that I’ve had to come back for days later, but there have been so, so many times I’ve had to text the person waiting in their car for me every 5 minutes for 45 minutes that my bag wasn’t out yet. Lots of fights whose baggage loads are all going through one carousel. Also, people in New Orleans take The Big Easy thing to its fullest extent, and that includes moving at a big easy pace when doing literally any task or project.
If you can avoid it, just pack light. Check the weather, but it’s 78 degrees here today.

Guys I'm freaking jacked to roll in tomorrow morning. I'm traveling with my teenage daughter and meeting like 10 people in my family. Might only have a lunch and a breakfast with just my daughter but the rest will probably be big groups.
We want:
Beignets
Gumbo
Po boys
Where should we go? I also want to do willa Mae's Scotch House, probably for lunch tomorrow. Would Jaques imos accommodate a big group this late? Any pro tips?
We might also just end up getting carryout or delivery because we're in a big Airbnb.
Where is the post parade/pep rally meetup?
Am I late planning this? YES, but that's how it goes sometimes.
-
@MakeItRain where you taking that enormous family? We should meet up with kids and talk Olympic sports
-
Also based on plans my family might have I might need to bail on everything but if I know my family nothing has been planned
-
Ok based on where we're staying I think I might be able to swing a big group at Mister Ed's and maybe lula distillery. Cafe Porche looked good but maybe not for a bunch of people
-
The balcony at Oz is currently where it’s at.

If you can get to Willie Mae's close to when they open (think 11 am), it'll save you from what could be a very long wait - especially if you have a big group.

To all you haters telling poor Benji not to count on flying out of kc...well I'm sitting on a SW flight departing kc right now so suck it you guys, Benji keep living your best life King
-
K but is it direct or is there a connecting flight to also worry about? :ohno:
-
SB you know I'm a non-stop kinda guy
-
True, I have always known that about you. In fact I could sense it from the first time we met.
-
Guys it’s raining p hard here and is supposed to until 5. I dunno about this parade. :(
-
This thunderstorm is mean. Pray for Ben Ji’s flight. :(
-
I know better than to drink a pats hurricane but did it anyways.
The gala was stupid af btw. Lot of just sugar bowl dorks glad handing each other. Food and open bar was great though. Wizard of oz theme didn't help.

Where is the post parade/pep rally meetup?
Is this a thing? Not doing the rally but going to watch the parade roll at least for a bit.
-
I dunno. It seems like maybe people had all different kinds of other plans? I think what we settled on was The Sidecar (which is the same bar as The Rusty Nail). But if people would rather just post their whereabouts after the game in this thread and let the meetups arise organically, that’s cool too.

Kite's Gulf Coast would be a good start.

Sugar Bowl parade likely to get canceled.

…at least that’s the opinion of this bigshot amateur meteorologist guy.

Update: hearing grumblings that the parade may still roll, but at 3:00. :Wha: :Wha: :Wha: :Wha: :Wha:
Honestly your best bet is just to post up at a bar along the route and walk outside with your go cup if/when it rolls by.

is there an "official" Kstate bar in/around Bourbon street that will put the hoops game on a TV tomorrow?
-
You guys, not gEing, so me and the wifey are walking around the FQ and we walk past a bama fan who appears to be struggling with his motorized scooter (goes without saying he's very obese) anyway I accidentally kicked his screwdriver into the gutter bc I didn't see it laying on the ground. Upon realizing what I did I said "eh eff that guy" and kept walking. 100% true not gEing this is not a drill.
-
-
@MakeItRain where you taking that enormous family? We should meet up with kids and talk Olympic sports
Sorry I missed this, my guy. We were at the parade and the awful pep rally. Had dinner at an amazing place in Metairie.
-
Dudes the parade was absolutely crawling with taters.
Who have no concept as to how to act in public, very annoying
-
I used to care about this a lot, but now I just enjoy it. We were sprinkling our dumb country charm all over these clowns.
I got a text from a friend of mine who is a born and raised New Orleanian who said, “At the Walmart and there are lots of KState fans here! They are buying lots of ketchup and mustard.”
:driving: :combofan:  :katpak: Hell yeah we are.
-
Went to rouschs to get some parade booze and met a local couple who asked ask all about us non lsu purples. They were there buying for their bird they had in a clear backpack just carrying it around.
New Orleans has the best people.

Went to the other side of I-10 for dinner last night. Solid steakhouse. Fantastic porterhouse.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20221231/4b4e4c788ed7e95283f96b523577acd6.jpg)

Looks like it has been a great trip for many of you, despite the airline woes. go cats!
-
Street preachers are out in full force at Champions Square. Crowds are thick. If you’re dallying at some bar in the FQ, might wanna think about putting it in a go cup in the next 15-30 minutes. Notoriously slow entrance line checks here. I missed like the first five Elton John songs bc of it once.
-
Make sure you are properly paked prior to game time everyone. We need to be on point right from kickoff.
-
If you’re walking from the French Quarter side, walk past the main ground floor entrance of Champions Square, about 40 yards further to Gate A. Quicker line. You’ll go up a big ramp.

Be aware of all the Bama scooters. They'll need that ramp to get to the nosebleed sections.
-
so what was the overall Cats turnout? Haven't heard any official numbers. Those that were there, what would you guess the numbers were? Hard to tell during the game, but I wasn't really paying attention to the crowd shots.

well we have the largest fanbase to ever cross state lines so you tell me

Sports announcers said the place was full. Also, when the Cats scored the K-S-UUU was very loud and seemed much louder than when Roll Tide scored.

That was just my perspective. Also possible that the cats fans were a lot louder bc the bama fans didn't always take off their oxygen masks when they were cheering

Place was not close to full. Was prolly 55/45 Qatz? But neutral locals who were LSU fans went with Bama because both SEC and also bc they’re still butthurt about getting banner’d by us last year.

It reminds me of 2003, Dr. Pepper, in Arrowhead. There was a crap load of Nubs at the game, supporting the Okies. It made me feel good that we got to eff up Nubs day twice that year.

Fun trip for sure. I'll be back later this month for Lecomte Stakes and next month for Risen Star Stakes at Fair Grounds if any of you Cat fans are into horse racing.
I found a new to me joint in FQ: Mr. Ed's. Lady friend and I threw down two rounds of chargrilled oysters and crab cakes. Also enjoyed some gumbo. Fantastic service on a busy afternoon.

So I ended up with my phone getting busted immediately after landing and having lunch at Parkway Bakery (Willie Mae's was crazy and it was pouring). Fun stuff! Still was able to meet up with family and caught the lame ass pep rally and had a nice dinner at Mr Ed's and then walked from the hotel to breakfast to the Superdome the next morning. Then walked to french quarter and went to the voodoo museum and had a shitty dinner but still had a great time! What a setup! Can't wait to come back and like actually plan things.

Having been to the Fiesta Bowl (in Tempe), Alamo Bowl, holiday Bowl, and insight.com bowl, I can definitely say the sugar bowl is the best experience. Wish I could have made it to the parade!

I feel like I've truly rounded out my Louisiana experience bc I am now sitting on westbound I10 bc some bad person got in a wreck on this 20 mile long bridge where you shut the whole rough ridin' thing down if you get in a wreck. We're at mile marker 125.7 in case any other gE'rs wanna shoot the crap since we aren't going anywhere for a while
-
oof that stinks. I would like to watch a documentary on the construction of that highway through like 200 miles of swamp
-
Yes as an engineer I can't help but be impressed. Couldn't have been an easy thing
-
well actually it is pretty simple and i’ll explain it in non-engineering terms. a) build the vertical support tube things, then just pave the road over them and paint the stripes on the road and add speed limit signs
why do people love to over complicate things
-
Sure but how do you build the vertical support things without getting eaten by alligators
-
a lot of that is done from barges
-
Exactly I would be riveted by barge gas the doc
-
Alligators are super overrated and pud. I’d fear the pythons instead.
-
It's true that alligators are easy to outrun; their lateral speed is crap. So if you remember to zig and zag, you'll survive.
On the flip side, you can't really crack a knee like some dumb moose. And if you get those jaws locked onto you, you're a goner, unless you remember to poke the eyes.
-
Pythons are super pud. The trick with them is that once they start very slowly constricting you, just say, "Hey. Knock it off, pal."
-

Some random thoughts from the game:
-Best national anthem ever
-Taters got a "Home of the CHIEFS" in
-Why on earth was the powercat rotated like 15 degrees on all the scoreboards, like what the eff? Lol
-bama fan got really excited and went "Boom!" for like pretty lame hits
-Annonncer felt like a bama Homer but they were also having more good things happen
-Needed more fan cam stuff and less stuff about honoring Ole Miss qb's who played before integration
Anyway, loved being able to walk from the hotel to the game to Bourbon Street

If that wasn't Alabama's PA announcer, it sure in the hell sounded a lot like him. The whole damn drive home my kids kept saying FIIIIRRRRRSSSSSTTTTDDDDOOOOOWWWWNNNN ALABAMA then ROOOOOOLLLLLL TIDE
Pretty sure that as the home team, we got to bring along our own, Mitch Fortner, to be the public address announcer.

LOL, what? If you thought that was Mitch, you didn't hear the dude, he was very Southern and sounded a lot like Alabama's guy does on TV. Mitch did announce the band during pregame and halftime though.
