Obviously the GCHS alums are plenty in this BBS, glad the entire state recognizes greatness.

Time to wreck another McDonald's

  memories

They did plan this very well. They moved the game to Saturday and it's during K-State's off week and KU is at Oklahoma that day.

It's probably the second best game the Wind Surge could have hoped to get for an attendance pop, they should have 5000+. I wonder if they asked for Derby vs. Maize and we're rejected. At least it's Dodge giving up the home game.

Are there any Dodge City High School posters on this board? I know not many of them go to college, so I wouldn't be surprised if we don't have any.

Yawn, wake me up win a WKS high school like Dodge or Garden City start winning state titles (Hutch/Wichita Schools are central KS). What are they like 4A?  We play big boi 6A ball out east.

Eastern/Central KS run this state in HS Football.

 :AA:

Why did the school board push Greg out? What if? Ryan ended up punting for Arizona.

Don't remember the details, just that there was a lot of drama around the move.

I was sitting with Ryan in the library and a telegram reporter came over to ask some questions about the situation. Then she asked for our names and was like "Springsteen, like oscar?" he calmly said "as in Greg". The look on her face, lol.

Those guys weren’t big but man they were explosive. I remember a playoff game they had with Kensington in the mid 90s. Kensington had multiple 250+ pound guys (big for 8Man) and Sylvan absolutely kicked their collective ass at the LOS. Don’t know what the secret was. Dad always chalked it up to bucking square bales but we may never know.

The Miege rule. Makes sense:

Quote
The local impact: Maybe the rule’s most-anticipated effect would be to change the classification of Bishop Miege High School in Roeland Park, which has run up an unparalleled record of athletic success playing in Class 4A in recent years, winning 118 total state championships between 2014 and 2019, including a six-year football state title streak, from 2014 to 2019.

The proposed multiplier rule would Miege would move up to a higher state classification to play schools with larger enrollments.
If the Legislature approves the rule, Bishop Miege would move from 4A to 5A, Miege Athletic Director Joe Schramp confirmed for the Post via email.
Schramp said this means playoff games and matches could be more challenging for Miege’s teams.

They tried that here and it had no effect on the large class at all, we still have underfunded city school getting their brains beaten in by suburban and large catholic schools. It has helped the rural schools in the smaller classes to not get pounded by parochial though.

Yeah, here in KS 5A/6A are almost interchangeable when it comes to top of the line competition in FB. But when you get down to 4A its a noticable difference. There is absolutely zero reason Miege should be competing for state titles in football against Colby F'n Kansas.

Funny thing is that I am friends with 2 guys who graduated from Miege in the mid 00's and they sucked ass at football back then. It wasnt until they started "recruiting" around 2010'ish that the just started smoking everyone.

Just googled KSHAA classifications and it looks like Colby has fallen down from 4A to 3A in the past couple of years.

Random side note. Last fall when I was driving out to the Colby area on the Friday evening before pheasant hunting season I was SHOCKED to see how many different western KS HS playoff games I could pick up on the radio along I70. It was probably 4-5 games and I hadn't even heard of half these towns.

I listened to about 2 hours of random radio calls regarding teams I had never heard of and loved it.

Weird that they have a 1A 11-man division. Seems like most 1A schools (and maybe even few 2As) used to play 8man. There was always a 1A-2A 11-man classification up until a couple of years ago. Amazed that there are 42 1A schools playing 11 man

It is my understanding that the reclassification that took place a few years ago was due to 4A being split into 2 divisions. Somebody didn't like that and therefore resulted in the smaller 4A division becoming 3A. There were probably some bigger 3A schools that remained 3A, but most of them went to 2A. Then the 2A ended up being 1A and thus 1A became very large. This is just my understanding and I could be very wrong.

4A is weird. Huge discrepancy between some of the bigger 4A schools (eg McPherson) that have always been in 5A until they were pushed out by suburban schools and the smaller 4As.

Seems like this would be a dumb play to run unless you were already ahead by 40 and just felt frisky. My money is always on converting "Power Right" for 2 points in the 8 Man game.

Our offensive line in HS ranged from 250 to 285 pound fellas (8 man football).  Every once in a while, we would bring a lineman into the backfield and let them run a 2 point conversion in.  I got to do it once and it was tremendous.

Must have five players lined up on the line of scrimmage - Center, two guards and two TEs was most common when I played, sometimes one or two TEs are split out as WRs but this was more of a gimmick when I played. The most elite 8-man teams were focused on running the ball when I played but that may have evolved some in 25 yrs. Normally a QB and two RBs in the backfield - line up in a "T" or "I" formation. Sometimes one of the RBs could be lined up as a "flanker" or split out wide. Basically, there are no tackles and just 2 RBs. Lots of possible defensive alignments 3-4-1 or 4-3-1 were the most common when I played. Very important to have defensive ends who can hold the edge or the defense will get torched (I guess this holds true in 11man, too but maybe moreso with less players on the field).

We had a formation where we split the ends and running backs out wide (2 on each side of the field).  It was usually a quick pass (think bubble screen) or a QB run.

White City Huskies were very focused on passing back in the day.  They had a QB that passed for all kinds of yards but they were soft defensively. Kind of like the Texas Tech of 8-man football.

The Cougars! Didn't O-B play 11-man for a while in the 80s/90s or are they a long-time 8-man school?

White City is south of Junction City. They had the most disgusting visitors' locker room I have ever entered. Possibly the original fixtures from the 1920s. I think they have combined with Hope for sports and are now known as "Rural Vista."

We only played 8 man (I think we played one 11 man JV game for shits and giggles).  I graduated in 93 and I don't remember them playing 11 man before then.  I think sometime after I graduated they played a few seasons of 11 man, but are back in 8.

They’ve really restructured the classes. New 3A is only the largest of large 3A and like half of the old 4A.

Beloit is 3A for all but football.

All sports —   https://www.kshsaa.org/Public/General/Classifications.cfm

Football —   https://www.kshsaa.org/Public/Football/PDF/FootballClassifications-2021.pdf

Football only counts 10-12th grades. All sports counts 9-12th.

I'm going to throw elite TX high school football in here.   Prosper was ranked #5 in the state at the end of the season.  Won their first game of the playoffs 28-3 and dropped to 9th.   :shakesfist:

Big game tonight against South Grand Prairie.  We may have to travel to west Texas next week if we win.  :sdeek:

Seems like Boom Town is more a reference of the football team and not the town.

There was a movie set in Wamego called "Firecracker".

They are proud of their fourth of July fireworks show.  I went to a couple of them and they were close to the size of Topeka's show.  They used to advertise the crap out of it, and IIRC they used the term "boom town" when describing it.

Personally I would like them to blow up Walter Chryslers childhood home during a firework show. But that's just me.

You might be thinking of St Mary's. There is a breakaway Catholic sect in that area that doesn't believe Pope Francis is the real pope and does a lot of home births and such.

Wamego is mostly Baptists and an East Manhattan micro-suburb.

What's the best 8-Man team you guys have ever seen? I'm going with the 1997 Sylvan Grove Mustangs or the 1985 Midway-Denton Eagles.

Those Sylvan teams were unreal. LickNecky and I Played baseball w/ a couple of their guys.

Holy crap, @nicname, I found this YouTube account that posts vintage 8-man footage. Here is Sylvan eviscerating Quivira Heights (which has since been folded into Claflin / Central Plains). Absolutely loved the chowder blue Q-H uniforms back in the day. I think Q-H lost 3 games this (1997) season - to 8-man I champion Centre, to 8-man II champion Sylvan and to 8-man I runner-up Little River.

Todd Caudle was their QB for four of those seasons. Would go on to play at KU. When I was in kindergarten, our high school played them up there in the sub-state round and got eliminated. Our bank had organized a bus trip to the game and I remember the bus stopping at a diner that had a marlin on the wall and I remember the man who owned the gas station stomping on the bleachers during the game. I was small enough that I don't remember much else about that game.

I just learned that Midway and Highland combined to form a new entity known as "Doniphan West" in 2004.

This is a pretty interesting site to explore. Has year-by-year records for most teams.

His DOD and Snyder’s pretty much overlapped exactly.  The stunning part of such a dominant run was how little P5 talent came out of Central.  I don’t think he even averaged 1 player a year.

Congrats on your all-conference status in SWKS. I bet you would have earned some playing time (special teams + garbage time) with the big boys (5A/6A). You would have impressed tons of girls (1) at a real school (probably not).

Ran into a Diener buzzsaw multiple times as a fan and (actual) player. Did NOT like. Whipped absolute Salina butt at tennis tho.

From 1993 - 2005, a Salina team made the state championship every year except for 1995 and 1997. Diener won six titles. Unclear why it never worked out at G-E.

IIRC they changed the district's stuff back in the 00's mainly because of Olathe North. Some of the other teams complained because they would go 8-2 or whatever but get their ass kicked by north in districts and miss the playoffs while shitty teams in shitty districts would make the playoffs.

When I was in HS, you had to win the district to go to the playoffs. I'm okay with bringing the top 2 teams from each district but it seems weird for every team to be in the playoffs.

Slight brag, but I also got a kiss from my head coach that game for pulling off a triple block on a long touchdown run!!

So you were an early adopter of the Ben Sinnot "crush multiple defenders on one play approach"? Very impressive.

C-C takes everything related to football pretty seriously. They have been in the shadow of Axtell and Hanover over the past few years. Did you ever play on the field at Wakefield? It was like a perfect carpet. Our school custodian worked hard on our field but but the area between the hashes was usually packed down pretty hard by the end of the season.

We played at Clifton-Clyde my junior year of high school in 1998. I'll never forget how immaculate the playing field was there. Best high school grass I ever witnessed.

Never. We were a 3A school, so most of the schools we played were 3A-4A at the time. Only 2A schools we played when I was there were Ell-Saline and Clifton-Clyde. Coolest field/stadium we ever played at was probably @ Marysville. The way the home grandstands are built into that hill with the school overlooking the playing field was really picturesque.

Okay. That makes sense. I had forgotten that Clifton Clyde played 11-man when we were in HS. Home Hanson Stadium in Marysville is very cool. We would always go up there for our regional track meet.

Cheney Cardinals with another incredible 4Q comeback to beat Andale for the second time this season and advance to the 3A championship game. Axtell continues to dominate 8-Man II.
