Title: What streaming services do you have and how much do you like them?
Post by: Institutional Control on May 23, 2022, 05:51:40 PM
I have:
Netflix
Disney Plus
HBO Max
Showtime Anytime
Amazon Prime
Hulu
Paramount+
Peacock TV
ESPN +

As a family, we probably use Netflix the most. I personally use PeacockTV the most because of soccer and I rarely use Amazon Prime and if it had a monthly subscription I would not have it.  HBO Max and Peacock’s apps are both terrible. Paramount plus was originally just for soccer but we enjoyed 1883 and Mayor of Kingstown. When it comes to original series, I prefer Showtime but my wife prefers Hulu. My kid loves Disney plus or I would have cancelled it already and ESPN+ for Cat games and UFC.

What do you have and which are your favorite?

I have Directv Stream for cable channels. It’s ok.

My list sorted by most watched to least:

YouTube Premium (includes YouTube Music) - $10 a month
ESPN+ - $6 a month (ish?)
Apple TV+ - $5 a month
AMC+ - $8 a month
Amazon Prime Video - $9 a month

YouTube is by far and away the one I consume the most, probably watch it about 80% of the time.  It's amazing the amount of really high quality and interesting stuff you can find on there.

I love the huge diversity of random sports stuff I can watch on ESPN+ maybe even more than what is available on regular ESPN.  I mostly watch soccer on it, love some late night USL games on Saturday nights.

Right now IMO Apple TV+ has the highest quality shows from anyone except maybe HBO, and it's only $5 a month.  A complete steal.

I have AMC+ only for the final season of Better Call Saul, will cancel as soon as I've finished watching that.

I don't watch Amazon Prime Video nearly enough to justify the cost.  I really should drop it.

Stuff I have cancelled:

Netflix - do not miss at all, might not ever subscribe again
HBO Max - will re-up when the next season of The White Lotus comes out
Paramount+ - had it for USMNT World Cup qualifiers kinda enjoyed watching old SpongeBob SquarePants and Beavis and Butt-Head episodes
Hulu - thought I'd give It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia a try but never got around to it and cancelled

Netflix - Stranger Things and nature docs are the only thing I watch on here. Excited for Season 4 Part 1 of Stranger Things coming out this weekend.
HBO Max - My favorite by far. There's always a series I can watch on here. It certainly helped that I got it two years ago so there was a lot of stuff for me to get caught up on.
Hulu - adult animation
Disney+ - I like the Star Wars series. Excited for Obi-Wan Kenobi. I watched Moon Knight, too.
Amazon Prime - I mostly have this for Amazon delivery. I've found some stuff on their streaming service that was okay, but I probably watch this one least.

Currently have:
YouTube TV
Netflix
ESPN+

YTTV is a good product but honestly I don't think I'm getting $65 per month of use and enjoyment out of it so I'm going to suspend it for a few months until football resumes.  Netflix is okay, it's good for documentaries and random older shows and movies.  Thinking about adding HBO Max to the lineup and will continue to use my free and totally not illegal streaming app for everything else.

I think I have HBO max by way of having HBO in my cable subscription. Never heard of showtime anytime but I might have that also by way of getting showtime via cable.

I have amazon prime for a few more weeks. Gonna cancel and see if it matters; I only use it in shopping circumstances as far as I can tell.

I get peacock as part of comcast cable.

Amazon Prime is pretty great. I totally dig crap like a five part documentary on Canadian rivers.

Netflix makes me feel like a huge dumbass for watching it. Garbage.

Disney Plus is rough ridin' outstanding for my 11 year-old.

I binged the first four episodes of Miami Vice over a two week period on free Peacock several months ago. What a ride.

Free YouTube is #1 by far. Incredible. Watch it daily.

Keep me posted on your Prime journey. I don't think I really get my money's worth, but I feel addicted to the occasional 2 hour/12 hour/1 day/2 day shipping. Makes me feel like I'm important, even though I'm not at all important.

There's too many separate streaming services out there.  A great and possibly million dollar idea would be to consolidate all of those individual services into one provider so that you pay a bill once a month to just one company.

Do Firesticks get old/wear out?  I currently have a 3rd one that just got laggy as hell, I get the spinny loop on Youtube tv, hulu etc.  And, the remote is super slow like I press a button go make a sandwich and then come back in room and it finally makes the click sound and the cursor moves.  my first 2 are just straight up done.  Will not function at all.

I have 2 new ones and they work groovy.  It isn't my wifi because I can watch literally anything I want on my lapop.

These things are pissing me off

Roku pisses me off, it's absolutely brutal for AppleTV and Netflix and has been for some time. All three of our TVs are Roku TVs and I have a bit of buyers regret. Also since we've purchased these TVs we've switched to DirecTV Stream and the Roku remote is a nightmare for this.

I have a roku TCL tv in my office, roku sticks in all other tvs and in my yukon, samsung tv with all the apps on it in living room. so basically we use roku for everything but I'm not really passionate about it one way or the other because the built in apps with the samsung work just as well. all seem to work fine though. I don't have apple+ (I have it free, just never activated it). we use netflix on the rokus and samsung echosystem and it seems to work. mlbtv used to not work well on samsung but they've fixed that over the off season. espn/hulu/disney work equally well on each. youtubetv works well on both. I don't know, we don't have issues mostly.

A few months ago, my old firestick was buffering / freezing all the time. I got a new one and it fixed the issue. I power it with the USB plug on the back of the TV so the firestick is off and cools down when I'm not using the TV.

Sup nerds, If I have to get a stick it's amazon. They by far have the best remote and it all works with every app flawlessly as it should. I compare it to a DVD remote because it has pause play/ff/rewind all on the same interface. Can also control volume. I have had mine for two years now no trouble. Just gotta keep it updated.

I use the Samsung Smart tv and PS5 with the media remote in my living room. I only have a firestick on my old vizio tv in my bedroom.

the original Roku boxes and X2 boxes I have still work but the apps like ESPN, Netflix and what have slowly went obsolete.  I wonder if there is a way to update the firmware and/or clear the ROM that would help.

It is infuriating to me that LG TVs don't have the ESPN app available.  I refuse to purchase something to plug into my "smart tv" in order to watch programming.  If I had known this was the issue, I probably wouldn't have went with LG.

Gotta be able to strip out some costs at that multiple and still be superior to Roku OTT hardware. Maybe they are fine with current market share though.

Rokus are great for users that are eager to sell all their personal data (for the privilege of using shitty second class streaming stick technology cheaply) to giant Chinese data mining operations.

Same folks that have no qualms with clicking on and sharing AMP links on message boards I guess.   :dunno:

I am definitely team IC on this one.  AppleTV is the only streaming device I would feel comfortable using.

(I have heard that people really love the Nvidia Shield too...but it uses the same android backend that fire stick/chromecast devices uses which...kinda sketchy IMO)

Also real talk the subscription services I have are all here. But My siblings and parents all split the cost or switch off somehow. (Someone pays for one of the subs or something else)
* is something we share thru multiple households
Spotify Family* Spotify is the premium music service and won't be told otherwise.
YouTube TV (Unlimited Screens and 4k soon to be Sunday Ticket)*
Disney Wombo Combo thru Verizon (Hulu with Ads, Disney+ and ESPN+)*
YouTube Premium (YouTube without ads is life changing and its how I watch alot of my podcasts and other things)
HBO Max*
Netflix*
Apple TV+
Have had Amazon Prime on and off but currently am off the Prime Train.

Also off topic but I have a Playstation Premium subscription as well which allows me to download any playstation game ever made on the ps5 and just play it whenever I want.

This is an expected response, and it is true that an online life is subject to data mining...it is unavoidable.  But some devices are much much worse than others in regards to what they do with your data.

According to this report, AppleTV is the only device that earned a Pass rating when it comes to data privacy.

For some, or maybe even most, that doesn't matter.  But to me at least, that's worth the extra $80 or so in price to not have my data sold to third parties.  Even if Apple is lying through their teeth (which they probably aren't) and they do sell my data, it still has by far the best UI and hardware on the market today, so my experience is better and that's worth it.

Roku says they sell users' data to third parties, target users with advertisements, and track users on other apps and services across the internet.

The cost is 4 to 5 times more.

Consider me skeptical.
So are their shitty ass phones but sycophants will still try to convince everyone that they're a superior product

If you don’t like their shitty ass phones, you probably won’t like the Apple TV either.  That said, I have issues with Rokus dropping signal all the time. Never had that issue with Apple.  I like how it will let me know when a new episode of a show I’m watching is available. Works with multiple streaming services, but not Netflix.  The 4K screensavers look amazing.  We 2 Apple TV boxes, 4 Rokus and 2 Fire TVs.

I get wanting high level data protection on your phone. Our entire lives are on there.  I don’t get being upset about the OTT box sharing data. Feels like much ado about nothing.

this is a very specific to me problem because my dog ate my volume remote, but netflix on roku is horrifying because if you hover for more than half a second on a title, it blasts a preview or clip at you and there's no way to turn it off afaik

This could just be a me problem, but anytime I pause an episode of a show on Apple+ (Samsung smart tv), when I go back to watch it, it starts it from the beginning.  Not cool.

Counter intuitively, when I learned about the nsa spying on everyone and grasped the extent to which my data is being sold to companies I kind of just gave up. Im not really proud of that decision, because I would like to change that, but the enormous size of the problem and knowing where we are with it seems like dodging raindrops in a storm. I felt the same way about people wiping down their groceries with bleach wipes at the beginning of the pandemic. If it is that bad, then lord take me now.

First of all, passranch's hyper anal tendencies about AMP links is just so super weird and plays exclusively to an engineering mindset.  I'm sure he's boring the hell out of someone in a conference call right now and probably wrecking a deal for one of his sales teams while he's at it and/or sitting there like a clod injecting no insight or expertise.   I digress.

I just read through Roku's Privacy Policy and doesn't read any different than any other privacy policy of thousands upon thousands of content and telecommunications services providers.  It's just part and parcel of doing business in the modern world in the Year of our Flying Spaghetti Monster 2023.  Apple also uses your personal content and hides behind the highly broad and yet still cryptic "We only use your personal information when we have a valid legal basis to do so" . . . in international mega corp parlance that's an 18 lane super highway of saying that we can do whatever we want with it as long as it doesn't break the law.

Why are you apologizing?

It just seems strange to take that angle when (for example) Apple just a few months ago had to issue one of the broadest security updates in their history, which included the OS of every Apple TV device.  With copious media coverage imploring Apple users to update their devices immediately for security reasons.  Apple gives themselves carte blanche over personal user data and they have major operations in multiple rogue IT nations including China.

Netflix is finally doing it, they are enforcing the password sharing in the US.

https://about.netflix.com/en/news/update-on-sharing-may-us

7.99 a month for each password/device share out of a home network. So if you have three extra people out of your home network (My sibilings and I share an account) you would have to pay $7.99 extra for each person you share with.

Bye Netflix, smell ya later. :buh-bye:

MLB is too dumb and will never have the viewership they wish to have until they can get rid of their dumb comish.

Netflix has apparently done this in all of their markets except for US and the UK. June 1st is the first day. I got an email about it earlier this week.

MLB is trying to make their product more accessible by getting rid of blackouts but they're currently getting resistance from the red sox, yankees, and dodgers. Eventually, hopefully next year, probably not, the blackouts will be gone.
