"What time did you get left" (regarding what time did you leave, maybe very family specific)
-
I have never heard either of those

yeah, clean house when you fire half your assistant coaches or whatever
-
I know a couple that might be "my mom" specific but also I think I've heard it from other midwesterners:
saying "anxious" when they mean "excited/happy"
Making "divorce" a 4 syllable word "di-vor-ice-ah". (I think this one is just my mom)
-
Phil, I hate to tell you this, but you might hang out with really dumb people.
-
"I seen" instead of "I saw"

Also kind of endearing is ending days with "ee" as in "Tues-dee"

mich, do people on the coasts regularly use "bucks" to describe US currency? how tf did that cornball word come to be the default?

I have never noticed this as unique to anywhere I've lived but it's an interesting question so I googled its origin

I don't think we can stop saying this. What do people not from the Midwest say? That seems more weird.

"Do you have any grey poupon?"
"Pardon me, let me squeeze right through here. Thank you!" I'm very polite, but ope is less wordy and useful and explains the situation perfectly.

Crick is not Midwest/plains, it’s southern/hill-country.
Creek is. Similar to See-ment for cement.
-
I have been made fun of for saying "covered dish dinner" instead of "potluck"
-
Is washeteria a Texas thing or a southern thing? First time I heard it, I had no idea what they were talking about.
-
I'll bite, what is "ope?" Oh Pee? When is it said?
Used when running into someone, starting to get someone's attention, excuse me situations.
-
I have been made fun of for saying "covered dish dinner" instead of "potluck"
I feel enraged by both of those terms, mostly because I know I'll probably hate every dish there except the party potatoes.
-

I will fill up on barely warm fried chicken
Are party potatoes the same thing as funeral potatoes?
-
See-ment for cement.
this is the #1 worst one, my god i am enraged just from the mention of it. besides the lol putting the emphasis on the wrong syllable (which is actually kind of adorable), why would you call concrete "cement"? do you call a cake "flour"?
"happy birthday nicname, i got you a flour!" enraged.
-
Lol ok construction nerd

I have been made fun of for saying "covered dish dinner" instead of "potluck"

oh sorry did I make you late to go build a cement wall????
anyway this is a covered dish dinner:

I also like to fill up on meatballs at these! Fun fact: in California spam masubi and lumpia is at every covered dish dinner

One in the same but I only accept corn flake version. Chips is weird. Maybe my family changed it to "party" to be more positive.

I've only ever heard potluck in connection with church events. Never heard covered dish dinner.

I think "covered dish dinner" is only ever said in Lake Woebegone.
As far my own contribution to this thread, I made fun of dax the other day for saying "for sell."
I also have a Kansas friend who says "rest'runt" instead of restaurant. I make fun of him, too.
-
I say ope if someone startles me. I don't use it in place of "excuse me."
-

Turn a corner and run into someone. Surprised but the only term to use there other than ope is excuse me?
-
I say ope if someone startles me. I don't use it in place of "excuse me."
Yeah, it's just a generic interjection for me. If I'm squeezing past people at, say, a movie theater, I don't say, "ope! ope! ope!". It's just a string of "Scuse me. Pardon me. Thank you. Sorry."
-
Yeah, "excuse me" is something I say when I'm trying to get past someone. It's premeditated.
-
Ope may be the midwest term I'm most supportive. It's a perfect term for so many situations.
-
I find myself saying something like "Hup" instead of "Ope" but it feels the same
-
none of those dishes are even covered [redacted].
i will grant you that also most of the dishes are not pots. there might be two pots total there. but it is still up to chance what you get and if it is any good. maybe plateluck is more apt.

i have a boomer coworker from nebraska who has quite the list of enragements but these are the only two i can think of now
"di-furnt" instead of different
the classic "for all intensive purposes"
there is also a guy i see a lot in a bicycle swap FB group who repeatedly posts stuff "priced to sale fast".
-
this has been a great airing of the grievances thread, thank you phil

I also blame my Western Kansas born and bred mom for teaching me the wrong pronunciations of certain words, and I've spent my life trying to purify my language from her early crimes. "Pellow" instead of pillow. Oh, hello, pellow! AY-g instead of egg. Excetera...
-
"melk" is unforgiveable

how do you think they were transported einstein

saying "let's rock and roll" to indicate its time to leave might be pinnacle midwesternt. I'm not sure if it drives me nuts, tho

I know two women who are from Alaska and they are from two cities that are 1,400 miles apart. They both pronounce milk “melk.” This unforgivable sin reaches beyond simply the midwest.

Ha, this as going to be my add as well. It doesn't even make sense.
Also, some east coast friends of mine pointed out that people in KC say "Kans City" when referring to Kansas City. I never noticed it before, but they are absolutely correct. Now I can't unhear it when people say it.

Was watching a video about 5 min ago of one of my old coach pitch games from the 80s and heard a kid say "wadn't." The north central kansas drawl was thick throughout the video. It was also awesome.

It wasn't until I moved to Boston that I realized that midwesterners say "Prinner" instead of "Printer", or as they say it there, "Prin-tah"
-
yeah and new yorkers have this crazy way of saying "wanted" and other similar words, with huge emphasis on the T and last syllable
-
Midwesterners absolutely HATE adjacent consonants and will swallow one or both with impunity. It is known.
-
Is it dads everywhere or specifically dads from the Midwest who say “we needed that” after a heavy rainstorm?
"XXX River is up/down" every time drive over it.
-
"Smells like money" when referring to animal crap.
"If you don't like the weather in $INSERT_ANY_STATE just wait a couple of minutes"
-
"they're burning early this year aren't they?"

My dad recently started updating me on precipitation at the cat ranch but he uses tenths... "got 7 tenths of rain last week"
