It makes too much sense for Venables to not take the job imo. I’m sure he’s negotiating to get near a top 5 HC salary with zero years HC experience, he’ll get a slightly longer leash because he’s a hometown hero, and worst case he’ll land back as DC at a major program.
If it’s not Venables it’s because he simply doesn’t want to be a HC.

After the great K-State exodus of 98, Venables and Mikey Stoops were the Co-DCs at OU until 2004 when Stoops left for the head job at Arizona. Venables was then the sole DC at OU from 2004 through the 2011 season. Mikey Stoops got fired and Bob Stoops didn't want to leave his brother hanging. Everyone knew he would make a spot at OU and Venables (rightfully) didn't want to go back to being a Co-DC, so he left for Clemson.

Anyone who is going to be happy for BV should do a Twitter search of Brent Venables. OU fans are the absolute worst. Just talking crap to everyone, acting like they didn't run him out of town the last time he was in Norman.

He was “run out” because then and even now at times his defenses were and are susceptible to getting beat by the play action vertical passing game.
If you run through the memory bank you’ll recall K-State beating OU deep over the top late in the game in Norman in 2001 (Mike Stoops/Venables) putting the outcome of the game back in doubt. This happened other times and has happened at in opportune times at Clemson as well.

Why would you want to be a head coach at any old place when you're making $2 million plus bonuses and likely a huge expense account? Particularly when you can roll to your sweet lake house in the foothills of the Apps a few miles down the road from your day-to-day house?
That alone would make me think twice about moving to Manhattan, KS or Norman, OK

Yes, and he hyped up the KSU v NU game that year to level 1,000. I, of course, was all in. Then they ran for like a bazillion yards vs our Alex Hrebec led defense, while some WT in an old red practice jersey yucked it up behind young Winters and I in the north end zone.

About a month ago, Venables said, he was in his daughter’s room one night saying prayers before bed, when she asked him why he didn’t take the Auburn job last December.
“I had made reference that I was a little bit nervous,” Venables said. “I really didn’t think we had the alignment there that we have here (at Oklahoma). So, I was a little bit nervous, and I said I was scared for her.”
His daughter assured him that he didn’t have to be scared, because he always told his children to “dream big.” So, she told him, to chase his own dreams.
“(My children are) the ones that fueled me to make that final decision to say yes to Oklahoma,” Venables said.
