IMHO, historically a lot of our touted experienced OL have been pretty overrated.
-
I hate to say it, but Taco Wallace.
-
Jarrod Cooper
-
Recency bias, but Skylar Thompson
-
Josh Freeman
-
Bryce Brown, imho
-

I loved Sams and he did nothing at his next stop. which makes me think this may be a good one.

Kwamaine Brown

Steve Grogan
Lynn Dickey
Josh Freeman
Ha ha
-
Evridge is a pretty good one because fans were pissed that Prince basically ran him off for (the underrated by KSU fans) Josh Freeman
-
I was certain that Kevin Lopina was going be a stud. RP ran him off. Think he went to wazzu and didn't do much.
-
Evridge is a pretty good one because fans were pissed that Prince basically ran him off for (the underrated by KSU fans) Josh Freeman
that's a good one, I was beside myself that when wiscy picked him up he was going to start stompin ass but i don't think he ever really did

Fair question. Didn't he like peak as a sophomore and be pretty frustrating after that?

People are just trolling me now

Watts is probably a good one, i think people loved him

overrated only in the sense that he set expectations really high in 2005 then his hip exploded and he was put into an ambulance in the last game against Mizzou and he was never the same again
-
Jesse Tetuan
everybody hated him
Doesn't mean he wasn't still overrated.
-
Ian Campbell?
-
Watts is probably a good one, i think people loved him
Yes, I think Watts is a good one.
-
Ian Campbell?
20.5 career sacks and a pick 6 is pretty good
-
The QB transfer from South Florida that like couldn’t use his broken arm because it was mumped up but he toughed it out and our fans loved his toughness and persevered and sucked bigtime (a ksu tradition like no other)
-
And then his brother came to ksufans or here or wherever and defended his honor
-
The QB transfer from South Florida that like couldn’t use his broken arm because it was mumped up but he toughed it out and our fans loved his toughness and persevered and sucked bigtime (a ksu tradition like no other)
Oh hell yeah. Grant Gregory. His brother came after me!
-
Ian Campbell?

Okay. Top of my head. I remembered one really great game, and maybe it was a good sophomore season that he didn’t live up to after?
-
that is true he was a monster soph year then sputtered out a bit in terms of stats (sacks)
-
Was Marcus Watts singled out by Ronny as the original FP? Not sure why but that's how I remember it. I'm probably wrong.
-
Jesse Ertz
-
Klein. Tremendous player. Heisman finalist, though?

Don't you either have to have high expectations as a recruit or have a good season in CFB, only to fall of into oblivion to be considered overrated? We knew we were getting a broken down transfer when he got here. I think some fans liked him because he played the most skettibrained vs any other QB in K-State history, other than Evridge.

How on earth can you write that list and include Josh Freeman? He's clearly the one that doesn't belong.
-
I view it as players that most KSU fans liked/loved while they were here but in hindsight and taking the in-the-moment purple glasses off, weren't good.
I instantly thought of Watts.
-
i can't denigrate marcus watts. his performance against OSU with his club arm was legendary.
Sams is a really great one. He stunk and we all thought he was like, legitimately better than actual good qb jake waters.
-
Josh Freeman
Like I still can't get over that game vs OU when he rolled and instead of running forward, or throwing the ball safely out of bounds he decided as he was getting tackled to play 500 with the ball and an OU linebacker prayed no one would get close enough for him to pick it off. Easily the dumbest play from a talented and (over)rated player.
I feel like Sams would be the way this board treated him, but at large for k-state no.
-
Jake Waters is a great one.

Jake Waters is a great one.
He was hated by half the fanbase, because of Sams & Iowa. NOPE!

Without a doubt, Bryce Brown.

also the fact that we've had multiple sams references just in relation to jake waters makes jake waters the premier choice so far.

You gotta take Freeman off that list if that's your definition. His on field performance made him a first round pick! If anything he was underrated by your definition!
he was drafted in the first round because raheem morris was tampa's hc and was being a total homer, not because he was a first round pick quality. it was v controversial at the time!
https://www.bucsnation.com/2009/4/25/853581/raheem-morris-defends-the
WRT to hype coming in he was the 4th ranked Pro-style QB ahead of Sam Bradford, Andy Dalton, Greg Mcelroy and Colin Kapernack. Freeman had a good career at KSU for sure, the best on the list, but he didn't leave being undisputed #1 QB in KSU history/Golden Boy which I certainly remember people thinking he would be at the time
these stats aren't that hot,

Josh Scobey making 2nd team all big 12 in 2001 was kinda sus - he had huge games vs the KUs & ISUs types but then had less than 3 ypc against the good teams
-
lmao, he started 61 games in the nfl.

Hands down. Still love him for his cameo in the KU Bram streak celebration, tho.

Was Thomas Clayton the Prince Era running back that transferred in from FSU and had biceps the size of bowling balls? He played alot but never seemed to do anything.

Just read his wiki page and it brought back some memories. He was actually a Snyder recruit/transfer, orginally the #8RB recruit in the nation...was leading the nation in rushing after 3 weeks in 2005 before he got in a fight with a university parking attendant and was suspended for a while, ended up with 650 yards in 2005.
Left the team after 4 games in 2006 and was still drafted in the 6th round of the 2007 draft.

Every class one or two of the top rated QBs play in the nfl, if you think freeman was overrated, the problem was your expectation
-
Jeff Simoneau
-
Freeman was appropriately rated by most of our fanbase. Everyone was aware of his shortcomings.
Waters, while very good, was overrated by our fan base (underrated by gE, and myself in the moment). Tyler Lockett, Tramaine Thompson and Co. contributed largely to this mystique.
Jarrod Cooper was appropriately rated, if not underrated by the end of his career. Cooper was excellent at what he was recruited here to do, stop the run. Did he have deficiencies in coverage? Yes, but when he was brought here because Ricky Williams and Troy Davis were running for a gazillion yards, Nebraska winning national titles running the option out of the I.

I had a class with him that I believe he attended maybe twice. He had nice penmanship and the spiderweb tattoo he had on his elbow was pretty sexy

And his results. He was drafted on “potential” just like Jordan Love. Not his results in college, which were underwhelming.
-
He never even felt like a true cat to me.

-
lmao, he started 61 games in the nfl.
he started 35 for the qatz, never once made first, second or third team all big 12, won offensive player of the week like once, never placed on a preseason watchlist, 0-9 against KU, Nebraska, Missouri and never won a bowl game. he was never great for k-state and it seemed (to me at least) that k-state fans expected that he'd be really good to great. this isn't his fault of course, fans + media put wildly unrealistic expectations on young players and he also had ron prince as his coach and like brandon banks running crosses
-
To answer the OP. Nobody. All cats have been awesome and they continue to be awesome. WTF is the matter with you?

This is a great list of over hyped recruits that never really played much / lived up to expectations as Cats. Replace Freeman with Matt Boss.
Freeman belongs on the list of Cats that actually played a lot and were still highly overrated.
-
i take this thread to mean players majority of cat fans think were good but in hindsight overhyped.
what's up with jonathan beasley and ell roberson's completion %? beasley was below 50% and roberson was barely above in their senior seasons. different times? i remember thinking of beasley as being solid but not great (think thompson/waters) and roberson near the level of bishop. still won a lot of games :dunno:

K-State fans love the eff out of athletic, mobile QB's, so they blackout during the passing game.

Daniel Davis is the clear winner of the expectations:reality dumb criteria--5 star recruit, didn't pee a drop, everyone kind of blamed Snyder, but no one really cared because we had one of the best offenses in the country and Sproles/Roberson.

You're probably right. I think we liked the idea of Gronk, but he only had two offers. Us and Buffalo. People really liked him tho!

I thought Gronk was a pretty good fullback. He's still a FB so there's a low ceiling. He got benched for young Dimel but still had a cup of coffee in the league.

This. They threw a lot of deep balls when the safeties would start to crash down to stop the option. Very different era/style than today's spread offenses.

Archer actually averaged more tackles per game during his brief NFL career (2.3) than Arthur Brown did in his less brief, but still pretty brief NFL career (0.42).

of course I've never noticed that

Like Josh Buhl? You know who else had more tackles? Blake Slaughter. There was also only one other all conference safety or LB to take away from his tackles - Ty Zimmerman who I forgot existed.
Obv he was pretty good but I’m trying to be thought provoking and staying on topic instead of naming every 4 star bust 😤
But Id say he’s closer to Brandon Archer on an elite team than best linebacker ever in our history.

I'd put stunz as most overrated cats fan.. If you're going to mention a member of the TNT it should be Hickman

Admit right now that you forgot that Freeman had Jordy Nelson.
Also when discussing Freeman why do people keep talking about the NFL, as if we didn't know he played in the league. If anything his draft placement and NFL career cements his overrated status at K-State. He was average to bad in those 9 rivalry games we talk about.
-
I am already prepared to nominate Jake Rubley

I’m just not inclined to think anyone is likely to be overrated when they play on bad teams. I’m not sure that we had anyone like this but to me a perfect example of “overrated” is a system QB like Colt Brennan who puts up monster numbers but can’t do much at all when you put them in a different setting.

In the biggest games his performance was appreciably worse. Periodt. He's the opposite image of Skylar Thompson.

I would love to see him get some garbage time before the season is over.

I think Freeman could have been many times better if he only cared.

He's legitimately at best the 4th QB on the roster, probably 5th. He didn't even make the travel squad for KU. You're definitely not going to see him this year.

He also had super underrated cat footballer Brandon Banks!
In a bit of defense of Freeman's 0-9, those Missouri/KU teams were out-of-character good.

And what about Nebraska? They didn't even make a bowl game in '07 and the '07 KU team we would've beat had we shown any defense at all. That's not necessarily Freeman's fault, but only scoring 24 points against a team that, at the end of the regular season, hadn't beat a single team that was still ranked doesn't bode well for his image.

lmao, he started 61 games in the nfl.
he started 35 for the qatz, never once made first, second or third team all big 12, won offensive player of the week like once, never placed on a preseason watchlist, 0-9 against KU, Nebraska, Missouri and never won a bowl game. he was never great for k-state and it seemed (to me at least) that k-state fans expected that he'd be really good to great. this isn't his fault of course, fans + media put wildly unrealistic expectations on young players and he also had ron prince as his coach and like brandon banks running crosses
He had Jordy rough ridin' Nelson running crosses.
saying he was appropriately rated has more to w/ my perception, especially the second half of his jr season on, that cat fans seemed to view him as a bit of a what might have been.
And you're right. He absolutely was drafted on potential. Guy had it all.

the answer to this question has got to be skinnybenny’s BOY, the pride of cimmaron, Ian Campbell. Dude had like 6.5 sacks against absolutely dogcrap noncon teams, was crowned king by every derpy tuck that wanted a western ks hero, then did p much nothing on any game that ever mattered

Is that James McGill?

Any kick or punt returner we ever had. We just have this weird culture of really caring about special teams, so anybody we put back there is going to score a few tds
