ITT I will post one song per week that you totally forgot about from when your were a kid if you are 38-49 years old. They will only be bangers with that undeniable 80s sound. It is my goal that when you play them you'll be like "hmmm, not sure I remember that one" but then when the chorus hits you'll be like "O crap I TOTALLY FORGOT ABOUT THAT"
If you are here to crap on 80s music then gtfoomt because it's the best
If you're here to find bon jovi or other stadium rock then gtfoomt because yes, bon jovi is pretty ok but ITT we will feature songs that peaked at like #37 on the pop charts. Edit: will also post peak chart position when available through a lazy google search
Double edit: will not post any that don’t have some sort of hilarious video element
also these videos will prolly have a lot of crossover with the "yes pls" thread
my first submission for the approval of the midnight society:
Rocket 2 U by the Jets
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d1PTuMQUu4g
Peak chart position: #6 USA, #92 Australia

The midnight society! I don't quite fit into the age demographic but I wish you well on your project, here.

I listen to the 80’s sirius channel more than any other
-
this thread really hasn’t gotten the traction i’d hoped but regardless, this came on the channel tonight while I was on my way to the SM east game and it reminded me of the thread, go cats

O don’t worry I’ll post at least one per week (or bump it with a new song every time it goes to page 2). Want to give the thousands of thread readers time to digest each song before I post the next one.
-
Ok, here's one to take you into the weekend. It's a dramatic story of lost love. You can absolutely feel the pain in his voice as the song goes on, it's got that wonderfully distinct 80s sound, and on the album art John Waite looks exactly like my homie Gabe.
Plus, the video has a hilarious part at 2:39 where he calls his lady on the phone and she either hangs up on him or doesn't answer, then in anger he slams down the payphone receiver and it shatters into a million little pieces (like his heart).

Can't imagine I've heard Missing You since around when it was released, had completely forgotten it existed, yet still know the song well. Super strange phenomenon.

Yeah man that’s what I love about the songs I will be featuring ITT. They make me wonder how many folds in the back of my brain are reserved strictly for 80s song lyrics and movie quotes.
Also, no argument that Panama is a great one, but I’m trying to stay away from mega-bands here. I want to link songs that make people go “o holy crap I haven’t heard that song since I went on that youth group ski trip in ‘89”
-
I enjoyed “Rocket 2 U”. I’d never heard it before.

FD i am happy to buckle up right next to you as we take this voyage to a fantasy land where people who get the midnight society reference also were appreciating these absolute bops on or around the time they were getting a lot of play on MTV or on the fm radio.

FD, great collection of songs long forgotten. They reminded me of the 80's and why I converted to outlaw country.
MTV, big hair, singers floating around on cables, half naked gals with pointy tits, and queer bands all contributed to my crossing over to country.

YLA- on Spotify I have curated the most comprehensive 80s playlist ever made by man (for serious). Yet somehow, that one has escaped my consciousness for the past 41 years. It has now rocketed into my awareness and will be on heavy rotaysh in the Fd household over the next week. We’ll played. This is the first song in this thread that I don’t know the words to.
Also, passranch, you stole the Human League right outta my mouth. I was literally gonna post “don’t u want me” as tomorrow’s bop.

GREAT call with the Yazoo. If aliens came down from another galaxy and were like “hay fd we’ve never heard 80s music and we can only stay for like 4 minutes can you plz play us one song that encapsulates the entire 80s sound” I’d be like “sure thing here ya go” and play them Only You by Yazoo.

I still have no idea if I'm supposed to call them Yaz or Yazoo? Anyway here's a bop featuring synth from them that I thought of when I first saw the thread:

this actually might be the best bop of all time. the limos, the wifebeater shirts, the mariachi band, the elvis impersonators, the LA kings hats, the well-placed trumpets and gym-class lyrics....add to that some absolutely genius lyrics, and you've got the quintessential checklist of all time bops. lackies and jenklefins, i present to you....

Bop #2 for today that I've been thinking about for a while now:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aENX1Sf3fgQ
I love the way Stewart Copeland just absolutely rips the crap outta the snare drum during the chorus in this one.

WHOA HOLY CRAP
heard the song a thousand times, but had never seen the video. At 1:15 the singer dude stops the music and is like “hang on, maybe there’s another way to do this” and then he stands in a meadow and turns into a hawk that flies away, then the bass player gets into the back of a jaguar, starts playing with his dork, and turns into a cobra. THEN the drummer is hanging out by a bridge and turns into an iguana or a savannah monitor or something and then the keyboard player is dressed like a dandy fop and is walking on a bathroom sink and turns into a black cat. Then the hawk comes back, flies over a castle, back into presumably London, and then Yes starts rockin’ again.
Owner of a lonely heart, indeed

ok last one of the night: i feel erasure is one of the underappreciated, under-the-radar bands of the 80s. This song encapsulates the intention of this thread....you'll listen and be like "ok, maybe i think i've maybe heard this once" and then the hook will come and you'll be like "o ya woo ive heard this one before for sure"
it's got everything. ultra gay femme lead singer. baby driving a forklift. seoul 1988 olympic shoutout. skeleton dancing. trench warfare. lil baby cupid sharpshooter. hobo bindles. miners with pick axes. spray painted speakers.
well, i guess after typing that all out you don't really NEED to watch the video but i'd still recommend it so here ya go

I wanted to put some holiday Christmas-y 80's jam up here, and I already put the Waitresses' fantastic Christmas Wrapping in another thread so I came up with these two absolute bangers I think we can all agree are as good as it gets.
In 1984, in an era when folks around the world were moved by the plight of starving folks in Ethiopia, Bob Geldof decided to record a charity-single-bop just in time for Christmas featuring some of the UK's biggest celebrities of the time; like Sting, Phil Collins, Simon Le Bon, Bono, George Michael, Boy George and many others. The result is a holiday charity song that we all know and love:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j3fSknbR7Y4
Inspired by this, and following the lead of the Brits, Harry Belafonte enlisted Quincy Jones and an absolute plethora of US celebrity musical acts to record their own holiday-celebrity-single-charity-bop for our side of the pond and absolutely owned Geldof's entire ass with this MASSIVE hit (see how many folks you can recognize and name instantly in this one):

ok, here’s a bop with a strange story for ya
when paul shaffer (the bald bespectacled homie from the letterman show) helped write this bop, they initially offered it to donna summer. However, as a newly born-again Christian, she claimed it was “blasphemous” and then mailed a bible to shaffer.
it was then picked up by martha wash and izora armstead (who at the time were performing as a group called “two tons of fun”). They named themselves “the weathergirls,” making themselves the first band in history to name themselves specifically after song that had ALREADY BEEN WRITTEN and then have that song go to #1 on the charts. Also gay anthem ftw
Submitted for the approval of the midnight society:
It’s raining men by the weathergirls
