Which tree is your favorite tree, right now at this moment? And, I don't mean which god damn variety of tree. Which exact rough ridin' tree, right now at this exact moment, is your favorite? Right now, I like the tippy tops of some Ash trees lining Lamar at 107th street. Ash are not usually very good Autumn color tress, but they are the first to fire this rough ridin' thing up and start changing their colors in the fall. Well anyway, when the early morning or late evening sun hits the top of these rascals, it's a little red tint that looks tip top indeed.
HOWEVER, my favorite is sure to change many times over the coming weeks.
The point here, crap bag mom-basement-dwelling goEMAW posters, is that we need to be mindful about the here and now and the undisputed number one way to do that during the Autumnal season is to always be on the lookout for mothering rough ridin' fabulous trees, and always have an opinion about which one is the baddest mother rough rider of all. go cats.

There is a maple tree at work, has fully turned red yet, but it's always amazingly red every fall. Top notch tree.

I like Birch trees.

Looking forward to large groves of oaks turning colors in a few weeks.

Cool story, I like tacos. What is your favorite tree at this rough ridin' moment, Spracne?

We transplanted a baby oak tree from our old home to our new home when we moved when I was a kid. That son of a bitch is 40 feet tall now. I love looking at it every time I go home. Oak trees grow for like 100 years too.

Most mountain folk are partial to the Aspens, but I’m a Bigtooth Maple guy. They are all over the Wasatch and are brilliant red in the fall. My favorite right now is this one from my run with the pup yesterday after work. We got a bit of snow the other day, but this little Bigtooth is holding on strong.

That is awesome. There is a massive 130+ yo burr oak tree in a state park close to Smallville. I love the crooked branches on burr oaks.
I got surprised by some burr oaks on my bike ride yesterday. It was cottonwood, cottonwood, cedarblah blah blah and then BOOM a burr oak along this creek.

-
I like Birch trees.
Also a Birch man, myself. And all/most northeastern conifers.
-
my autumn blaze maples are about to pop. I have a total of 26 of them in the yard. 8 of them are fully mature. For about 4 days per year I have the dopest front yard in america. Will post pics on like thursday when it happens. When I'm like 67 i will have the dopest front yard in the universe
-
the house on the corner here had three flowering pears in a little group next to their house that always flamed out in autumn. wind blew one down a week ago and these fuckers went and cut down all three.

Today this lil guy is my favorite tree. I planted it like 7 years ago from one of those helicopter seed thingies that fell from one of my other autumn blazes. This is my fav because for some reason all the leaves in the middle turned purplish (go cats) and the ones on the outside are still green.

I have some kind of maple that is purple year round.
I hate fall trees. Summer trees are great though.

There is a maple tree a block away in my neighborhood that always starts turning half red and the other half is green. It's a helluva tree and my favorite right now as it is in it's prime

Today this is my favorite tree. It’s a sycamore that I bought from a nursery on clearance out of season 10 years ago for $8. At the time it was barely a stick. Now, 10 years later, I would estimate it to be 15 feet tall or so. But I don’t like it for it’s fall foliage…the leaves on American Sycamores just kinda turn wilty and brown. It is my fav for 2 reasons:
1. It sheds it’s bark like a snake sheds it’s skin and that’s kewl
2. As you can see in the background, I live on a T-road. My house would be where the vertical part of the T meets the horizontal part. It’s a dead end both ways, so we get minimal traffic (if I see two cars on the same Saturday that’s a weird day). Anyway, I strategically planted that sycamore 10 years ago at a weird angle compared to the rest of the house so when it grew up and people came down our road, when they get to the T they can’t see my front porch because of the sycamore foliage. It has now grown to the point where I can now pee off my front porch with impunity and that’s rad

What are the ones that turn bright yellow called? There is one at my kids school that is turning bright yellow from the top down. What is the species? Characteristics: pretty tall, broad leaf, turning yellow, formerly green.

FD, do you rake all those leaves or let it go au natural?
-
Because big maples are the GOAT at dropping mountains of leaves.
-
organic raking is really where it’s at now. no reason to burn fossil fuels when mother nature has it on lockdown via wind and other more sustainable ways to move leaves imo
-
I usually rake one giant pile for the little FDs to jump in and when they get bored with that I put some in the compost pile and then leave the rest on the ground

serious questions for cats w/ htiq:
i have 6 maples in a row going down a hill. there's probably 20 feet of elevation change at most from the top tree to the bottom tree. for some reason, every year the tree at the top changes colors first, then the next tree, and so on. on the back of the house there are other maples further downhill that haven't even started to change yet. why do they change in that order? do the trees at the top get more or less water or something?
-
also, tdaver, your view is just ridiculous. where in the world is that?

Seems like small maples change before big maples and maples exposed to more sun change to maples in locations where they are shaded by larger trees... No idea why. Need an EMAW arborist to weigh in on this.
-
See, lookie. First tree at the top of the hill went through a full presto-chango and had already lost 3/4 of it’s leaves.
Second guy in the middle is just starting to go
Last few guys at the bottom of the hill haven’t even really thought about changing yet

I think the root systems may be connected?
Scooter Libby once sent an email to Judy Miller with this line in it:
“Out west, where you vacation, the aspens will already be turning. They turn in clusters, because their roots connect them.”

def not bitching. I love the cycle because my view is constantly changing, it’s just weird AF. The interconnected root system makes sense tho. I remember seeing something about that on Fantastic Fungi. That actually may explain why my other one-off maple clones that are all by themselves change color just kinda whenever they feel like it with no rhyme or reason

I planted about 10 of them in a straight row spaced about 20' apart. Some are around 25' high and some are only around 12' tall. The tall ones have turned but some of the mid sized ones have just started turning and the smaller ones are still green. I don't have any idea as to why they do what they do, so I just enjoy God's nature.

Water keeps the leaves on longer. Your smaller trees need less and the trees at the bottom of the hill get more. Thus, slower to change in both situations.

Today this lil guy is my fav. Not because of its beauty, but because of its tenacity. A helicopter seed thing washed down the driveway and into my firewood bin. It grew up under the firewood and found its way out of the bin. I’ve cut it down to the ground 3 or 4 times and every time it’s like “nerp, this is where I live. Deal with it.”
I know I could pull the roots up but that doesn’t seem like it’s fair so we shall continue the ol back-n-forth until I die and it ultimately grows giant and destroys my driveway

I remember how my mind blew during my first horticulture class when I realized what an Osage Orange tree was.
And that the tree everyone calls a Chinese Elm (or piss elm) is actually a Siberian Elm. Chinese Elms are really good cool trees unlike their cousins.

Went on a tangent today and was looking at the State Champion trees of Kansas. Jealous of all you KC bros
https://www.kansasforests.org/kansas_forest_services/kfs_docs/Champion%20Tree%20Report.pdf
They have a pretty sweet map where you can select the State Champion locations layer and then click on each one. Half of them have a picture you click on at the bottom of the info.

Also, do any of my GE resident arborists know what’s going on here? I have a couple of young maple trees that get these weird brown and black spots every year towards the tail end of summer. They don’t appear to affect the health of the trees as both have shown v good growth over the past few years. The leaves just get spotty and gross and me no likey. What gives?

Great fall pics everyone.
Trees are really spectacular here in Smallville this fall. Normally, the maples race ahead of the oaks but the hard frost a couple of weeks ago has the oaks and maples in glorious symphony of color. I don't remember a nicer fall here. Got to sit on the porch and take all this in while passing out Halloween candy last night.

My favorite tree is the golden rain tree after seeing one at the Denver arboretum. I even bought some seeds for it off Amazon or something. Then I found out it is poisonous, so never ended up planting those seeds.

Fun while it lasted, but they’re about done

low res image of some aspens I saw on the Baldwin Creek trail near St Elmo, CO Sept 2018. Probably the most beautiful day I've experienced in Colorado.

The $50 a year I donate to the Arbor Day Foundation is the best money I donate every year. $50 plants 50 trees.

Dlew, is that your cute little furbaby? Nothing beats walking with your best friend in the world on a beautiful fall day.

You said it, KP!

Drove from Louisville to Lake Charles last weekend. Colors were popping. No pics as I'm a safe driver but the views were great.

Catchacold!!! I was hoping you would post. Larches have always intrigued me. Need to see if there’s one I could grow around here.

And on the 20th day of October, God looked at the tree that randomly grew in my yard from one of those helicopter seed thingies like 9 years ago, blew a chef’s kiss, and was like, “word.”

Yeah my kids are gonna be REAL mad when I die and they get nothing except a bunch of old emaw shirts bc I decided to plant a forest with my estate instead
Loljk imma be buried in all my vintage emaw gear
-
I always like when the top half of the tree is one color and the bottom half is like “nah this year we just gonna stay green from the knees down”
In honor of caturday lil guy is 1/3 emaw and 2/3 baylor. Both big sisters are all nubbz, tho(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20231020/2d64c2c502a7290fdc47652aaeaa17a9.jpg)

There is a very nice maple in the cemetery where my dog likes to walk right now.

I've decided that cottonwoods are the poor man's aspen tree. Their leaves have a similar reflective quality and are quite nice to look at when backlit by low morning sun. I saw some very nice cottonwoods in creek bottoms when driving in the Flint Hills over the weekend.

I love the sound of wind through cottonwoods. Memories of childhood. If they weren't brittle AF and spread cotton everywhere, would love to have a bunch around.

Their cotton is very gross. Would not want to live up close to a cottonwood.

we had some cottonwoods on our farm growing up, which ended up being the designated spot to haul cows/pigs that unexpectedly died. hook their back leg up with a log chain, and drag their cold dead ass out to the cottonwoods with the tractor, rip in peace cow/pig.

We're still green down here in the corner of Louisiana. Jealous of this color in Kentucky.

I thrive in days like today.
I still prefer summer, but a dreary autumn day is right up there for me.

It's 70 degrees, not cold
-
Our ash tree is doing its annual leaf dump this week. The golden leaves make a nice contrast with the green lawn.

This tulip tree is a truly weird case. Planted it like 6 years ago, it was about 12 feet tall, then mysteriously died this past spring. I cut it off at ground level in May of this year, and then it exploded up out of the ground and had a lil over 5 feet of growth in 5 months. As the great Goldbloom said, “nature….uhhh…finds a way”

Ha, yep I took it. Mavic Air 2 and each panorama was stitched together and edited in Adobe Lightroom.

All of the trees on the KSU were incredible today. The whole campus looked glorious today. I walked around and basked wonder of fall and then took a nap on the 4th floor of Hale Library for old time sake.
