Players to watch, sleeper players, keys for success, statistics I don't understand, matchups. This is the thread for Smart Talk on the upcoming KSU football season.
Obviously I won't be participating much at first because I haven't read your guys' posts in this thread yet but one player I have my eye on is TJ Smith. I think he'll be my favorite this year. I like how every time he tackled someone last year it looked like he killed them on the spot.

The depth chart had some surprises. Felix Anudike and Landry Weber, in particular.

what i really DO NOT like is that we used to have a lot of good/great linebackers, and now when i look at our linebackers, i see daniel green and then some guys that were converted from other positions/guys i've not heard of

This is 2021, we play maybe 2 linebackers at a time? It's all about having good dbs now.
Green is good and whatever 2 star 5 heart Jonathan Truman clone we put in there will be serviceable.
-
My hot take is the offense will be much better this year as long as Skylar is healthy and we can work the play action/RPO after serving up a healthy dose of duece and jacardia.
Defense will be what makes our breaks our season.
Final verdict: 9-3 regular season

It’s looking a lot more like it will be Ervin not Jacardia unfortunately

I think we typically play 2LBs and a nickel back, but maybe they are thinking we need more size and less speed for Stanford.
-
When I played madden I would always do the 4-2-5 and I liked those “Rover” SS guys. Think we need more TJ Smiths and fewer nice, smart young men with limited athletic abilities.

Nah, we'll still play a lot of nickel, they always go with the 4-3 for the depth chart. They did rename one of the LB positions though.

The coaches really seem to like Ervin, he's been hyped up.
-
I thought Ervin looked the most explosive 2 years ago before he got hurt.
I hope Wright plays.
I think the offense could be pretty good as long as the receivers aren’t dog crap again.

Best offense since ‘14.
Defense will depend on how good/bad the LBs are.
-
I’m not going to lie. I think we could be really really good.
If we go 500 or win 7 I’m going to be disappointed

We need to win 8 for me to feel like this was a good season.

I want it to be Deuce and Wright because I like a Thunder and Lightning situation at RB and we really haven't had that since like Rock Cartwright probably.

Does _FAN ever post Smart Talk™ on this board anymore, or just for the paying customers now? Hopefully he's just saving it for the season. :crossfingers:

I know last year was a weird covid season but our horrible opening game gives me pause on the Stanford game. My inclination is to not read too much into anything that happened last year but it was jus so shocking that I can't shake the feeling we're going to come out flat again. On the flip side we were amazing to start the season in the 2019 non-con. Which is the real Klieman?
-
Will the real Kli Dog please stand up?
-
How about that 3 man front we saw against Stanford? I haven't gone back and watched the tape just yet but it seemed to work pretty well. Would anyone who has gone back and watched the tape like to give us some insight into why it worked so well?
-
Does anyone have the tape I can borrow?

let's talk Nevada.

their QB (Carson Strong) is good. nfl prospect. has a good arm but is very slow, and has a knee brace on.
game plan: BLITZ THE eff OUT OF HIM
-
What’s up with the lack of Jacardia? I know deuce is “the man” but I just feel a 220lb RB who can run should be getting more looks.. especially since Thompson is out..

So a Kroger Brand version of Jason White? Will take!

How many carries do you think he should be getting? He's the third string RB and the two guys in front of him are really good.

the carson strong guy licks his fingers way too much, disgusting

Huh? Was there a terror attack or mass-shooting or something in Carson City, Nevada that I missed?

I agree with non-stop blitzing 24/7/365. The book on Carson Strong has always been that if you sack the ever loving crap out of him non-stop he can't throw as well.

Also, their run defense sucks huge balls and taints, so our running game (especially w/ the qb battering ram offense) should to a great job of keeping him off the field and our stud/boss pass rush primed to inflict max damage on molasses foot Strong.
He should be in Geno Smith mode midway thru the third qtr

This is the Smart Talk I came here for! :ksu:

You know what play I miss, that pop pass that Snyder always used to the fullback. Always gained a million yards.
-
I'd chew my arm off for a good Quincy Morgan-esque jailbreak screen.

“…and it’s Dineen! Rumbling down the seam …. and he… will… score! A 59-yard touchdown from Will Howard to the FULLBACK… Jax Dineen!”
-
Sorry, best we can do is a short side option.

Unfortunately, opposing coaches started pointing out the ineligible players downfield. Not really effective after that.

Yeah Bob Stoops was a loud complainer

Was such a cool play though

I'm glad you enjoyed that little chestnut. I often approach my posting with a servant's heart, leaving small works of service for future enjoyment.

I guess that is the dilemma. Joe Ervin is also very talented and is deserving of carries as well. Maybe I just like the “thunder & Lightning” type of backfield. It’s good to have a power RB who can get the tough yards. I believe Kleiman did mention something about Jacardia getting a few more looks.
All in all this is a good problem to have.. a talented backfield.

Is this the fake QB run to the middle and then jump to throw a basketball jump shot pass to a fullback or tight end? Because I was just telling my bro today that we should use that with Howard.
