Erase your current situation with jobs, kids, families, etc. Where would you move to first if the stars aligned. Me:
1. California
2. Oregon
3. Colorado
Warning: Not a hippy! I just love the outdoors!
-
Hawaii
Pretty much any quiet beach town in whatever state
Colorado
-
Tough choices, Virginia, Montana, and Colorado come to mind first. Never been to New Hampshire or Vermont but I could also see myself falling in love with that area/states as well.
Zero desire for Cali, Texas, Florida, or anything around Florida/the south in general. Nice enough to visit, would hate living there.
-
Maine, Vermnot, Idaho, NYC
-
Primary residence in Montana, Idaho, Oregon with a second place in Southern Utah
-
Western Colorado
-
Upstate South Carolina or Charlotte. I need humidity. Can't do the dry air states other than vacations.
If it wasn't for the no-see-ums, I'd live along the SC or GA coast. eff those blood suckers though.
-
Lake Tahoe
-
Colorado, New York, New Mexico, Wyoming

Lake Tahoe
Not a state, you dummy!

Lake Tahoe
Not a state, you dummy!
it borders two states

1. California
2. Florida (Miami)
3. Illinois (Chicago)

Maybe take it to the shame thread, but I think Chicago is way overrated. I guess I just don't get that city. It's cool and all, but I'd never want to live there. Been there a crap load of times & it's never been like: "OMG, I GOTTA LIVE HERE!".

Depends where you are. The touristy areas are touristy.
-
Yeah, I’ve always stayed downtown (near Michigan st.) for work. Not trying to crap on the city. It’s definitely a top 10 city in the US.
-
I'm irl going to wait to decide where until I'm ready to move because I'll need to see where there aren't a bunch of other people when the time comes.

I live near Chicago so I visit frequently. If I can't live on the beach then I would want to live in Chicago. In terms of what I like, it has a little bit of everything.

The UP. It's probably actually like my 5th or 6th choice but people already said my other ones.
-
Northern Michigan seems like a summer paradise
-
Northern Minnesota.
-
People that live up by the Canadian border drive snowmobiles around in the winter instead of cars. Sounds cool to me!
Also, they drink a lot.
-
I would probably prefer Los Angeles, CA over anywhere in the world but my wife refuses to not hate everything about LA. Very frustrating.

LA is amaze. It has everything I love. Traffic is stupid, but that's because it's the coolest place on planet earth and everyone wants to be there.
-
I'd take San Diego over LA all day son

this is a good point

san diego is definitely great but way more to do in LA which puts it over the top for me
-
South Carolina would probably be one of the only places the wife and I could agree on. Mountains for me, beach for her
-
It really sucks that I finally got a job where I can work from anywhere and I had to go & reproduce right before it. Would have been a blast working up in the mountains, hiring docs, & then hiking over lunch & catching some gnarly trout. But my kid is pretty awesome, so that's cool too.
-
Lots of kids live in the mountains.

Yeah, but are there grandparents there too? Because that's pretty big on our end. Especially since my fam only has 1 grand kid.

If things go according to my plan, we will live 6 months of the year in Northern MN, and 6 months no farther North than Kansas.
-
Kc checks all my boxes except weather. I don't really care about doing stuff but maybe that would change if there was more than 4 weeks of tolerable weather a year.
Along those lines I don't really have a specific place in mind but reasonable humidity in a metro area of 50k-3million without horrible traffic.

sometimes. grandparents can visit too! Live the life you want, just don't blame the kid for not living in the mountains.

I generally feel this way, I'm never really that impressed and/or happy with and Chicago experience I've had.
Same with LA. Probably shame for me for both but I just can't ever imagine living in either city, at least they are better than pick any Texas city though, woof.
-
Chicago is a slightly cooler generic mega-city than dallas. That's about all there is to say about it
-
chicago has much more of an identifiable culture and vibe (to me) versus dallas which comes off as the worst kind of generic metropolis with no soul whatsoever
-
i don't think i'd prefer to live in the united states, although i'm not 100% sure.
at any rate, i think the list is probably (in order): nm, ut, id, wa, or, az, mt, co, wy, tx, ne, ks, sd, nd. no other acceptable states.

Yes, people love having an excuse to visit the mountains. Especially if they have someone to stay with.

I would probably love the crap out of Washington. I've only crossed the state line once over gods bridge, but it looks amaze from Portland.

Portland Oregon was my favorite vacay city before ANTIFA and Black Lives Matter burned it to the ground.

I don't think there are any states that don't have places in them that would be shitty to live in.
Most states probably have somewhere within them that would be adequate to good.
-
I think New Mexico would be good assuming it had water in 10 years.

Does the Rio Grande have overuse issues like the Colorado?

Looked it up. Yep.

NM def has my interest

I grew up like right next to NM. I’m confused by the appeal for anyone. Hot, dry, weirdos.

the montane half circle from las vegas/santa fe north is nice. the mountains north and east of silver city are one of my favorite places in the united states.
the bootheel and the guadalupe mountains are also really cool places, although i probably wouldn't be that interested in living in those areas.
-
hmmm, maybe I’ll have to check those almost certainly shitty areas out for myself

An Independence Day tradition in the Nicname household.
States: AZ (phx), And I generally like any place that isn’t too muggy

The mountains in northern nm are great. Red River area. I think it’s called the enchanted circle or something. Also, Blake’s Lotta Burger > basically any burger

sd, on monday check out the fancy new mexico hyatt resort on the bachelorette. It’s the sprawling set of mud-reddish buildings that are a slightly different shade of mud red than ever-y-thing around it.

LMAO at all the Colorado answers.

Whatever state has mild weather and no sun but still lots of golf. Washington?

Colorado for sure

I have not visited many places. But my guess would be Montana or Northern Cali.

North Dakota.

Yup, all those are great in NM, ABQ is alright, but there are lots of cool places outside of the eastern 1/3ish of the state.
That being said, CO would be slightly above for me because in my mind being in Durango/Silverton area would be ideal, and I visited those places a ton when I worked a lot in the four corners area. For me CO is up the list a lot, but it's basically western side, Telluride on down. I seriously loved Durango so, so much.

Can confirm the part about Blake's. :lick: Had it for the first time last winter.
Also visited Ruidoso and that's a lowkey great place.
-
i like NM and don't wanna move but I'd take CO or San Diego if the perfect opportunity presented itself
also if SD is talking about the eastern half of the state (i.e., the part he grew up next to), yeah, it's pretty bumfuck. i dig albuquerque though and northern NM is gorgeous. can also provide recommendos for southern NM, although i don't really recommend living there unless you don't mind not having a lot going on most of the time. ruidoso and cloudcroft are alright depending on what you want out of life.
I think New Mexico would be good assuming it had water in 10 years.
yeah this and forest fires are the biggest concerns. the rio grande ran dry in ABQ this year for the first time in forever. the mountains up in CO aren't getting snow like they used to anymore. but i mean climate-wise everywhere's probably mumped in some capacity or another anyway so :dunno:
LMAO at all the Colorado answers.
yeah i love visiting but most of the state is crowded and/or expensive as all eff, and the places where it isn't either don't have any jobs (Walsenburg/Trinidad) or any scenery whatsoever (everything east of the front range)

Same. My brother lived in Alamosa for 2 years and then in Durango/Bayfield for about 6. I
The Durango area is about as good as you can get.
