I haven't watched a single second of college basketball this season, but I always take this Thursday/Friday off for a staycation. Apparently the schedule is all mumped this year and Thursday is the play in games? Also Illinois is a 1 seed? Way to go Brad!
Anyway, feel free to discuss other tournament related stuff itt.

Only 4 entries in goEMAW Bloggers bracket pool. I am going to kick GregKSU's butt.

had a buddy ask me to be in his money bracket pool told him I've watched 4 games all year and all of them cats. probably my best chance at winning a pool since I don't know anything about any of the teams

what happened to the thursday games? this sucks.
-
Yeah, it was a bit of a shock when I looked at the schedule. Monday games sucks too.
-
I originally picked COVID-19 to win it all but am now thinking it could be players boycotting.

Due to the unfortunate scheduling I will not in fact be watching basketball all day, faggots.

It pushed the schedules back. Especially with some of the teams testing positive last week. It's a jerk! :curse:

Feels good to have the tourney started. Finally feeling like we are getting past the past year. Along with the NBA, cancelling the NCAA last year was the start of everything.

Sure, whatever. I don't wasn't this to turn into a college football playoff debate, shouldn't have even put it, but these games last night and today have been awesome.

i watched most of oregon st's ridiculous run through the pac 10 tourney, so seeing them beat the crap out of utenn is extra fun.

Always fun to watch some mobile yet subpar athlete just give a team fits due to being huge.
Prob not as useful these days, but always loved the football guys roughing it up on the b-ball court.

I've been to vegas a couple of times during march madness and its a freaking blast. I was walking through the MGM sportsbook/lobby at the end of the northern iowa/KU/Farukomadush game and it was just nuts.
Also has anyone ever had a better night in vegas than this guy?

Awesome. Exactly what I’m talking about. I believe that is at the Superbook at the Westgate. I probably talked crap to that guy in that same room when our cats beat them a couple of days later.

I went to Vegas for the tournament in 2012. Ended up watching the game next to a couple of guys with money line bets on La Salle. The rest is history.

yikes, at least winters nailed it
:opcat:
lol
Three-star prospect Tony Mitchell's stock is on the rise, but unfortunately for Kansas State, it doesn't look like the small forward is going to be a Wildcat.
"Tony went up to Kansas State on a visit through his school without me, and two weeks later I heard through other parties that he was committed," said Mitchell's mother Angie Mitchell. "He was young and hadn't been on any other campuses.
"Now he is going to definitely look at other option and see where he feels comfortable athletically and academically."
Mitchell, 6-foot-8, 220-pounds from Miami (Fla.) Center Life Academy, had offers from Marquette, Oklahoma State, Arizona State, Florida State, SMU and TCU before he committed to Kansas State. Mrs. Mitchell said that these schools have respected her son's commitment.
"Even though it was a verbal commitment and not a signed commitment, the other schools have respected it and not made contact," said Mrs. Mitchell. "That is why we feel it is important to officially open up his recruitment."
Mitchell will participate in the Lebron Skills Academy and subsequent tournament and will run with Brandon Bass Elite the rest of July.
The likelihood of Kansas State re-recruiting Mitchell is quite bleak at this point.
"Kansas State will be sitting at the back of the bus," said Mrs. Mitchell.
-
We have our first forfeit, VCU out against Oregon. They must have not done a good job with distancing to not be able to have five players who couldn't be exempted by contact tracing.

I do remember that... Vaguely. It was a long time ago.

Homeboy was only 54% and nailed them both, although he had quite a hitch on that second shot.

Yeah that was a bs call there imo. Felt great for the Pleasant kid to hit those shots after struggling. They'll be local heroes for knocking off UT for a long time, especially the kids from Texas.

it kinda was, although who gives a eff. they were letting them beat each other to death prior to that touch call, though.

I was rooting hard for Shaka but I had no problem with that foul call. All the credit should go to that guard for having the guts to put his head down and get inside the paint to drop that pass off.

Yep probably, could still have utility if someone outside of the team is by them for like 10 minutes or so (floor wipers/staff or whatever).

It should be pretty easy to shoot while effectively distanced. Put the mask on in between reports. I’m sure all the TV media is being religiously tested anyway. Overkill imo, and muffles the sound from reporters.
Anyway back to basketball.

Guys, that's not how it works, certainly y'all know that.

That UT loss was a gut punch, I really thought they could have made the final four.

It's kind of funny that the squawks worst team in 30 years was still able to secure a higher seed than Oscar's best ksu cats teams.

it's kinda bullshit not to have any games today, imo.

Yea this format is garbage
-
I hate it too. Monday and Tuesday night elite 8 games :Yuck:
-
are ratings better this way? because you'd think they could easily get back on track considering there isn't any travel. Playing on a Monday and a Thursday shouldn't be a big deal
-
are ratings better this way?
Nope, but as I'm sure you know ratings for everything in the pandemic have been bad. Friday is a dead zone for network TV so they would have liked to keep that night. However, they shifted the days for testing and gaps. They shifted the first weekend to give as much time as possible to sequester after the conference tournaments. They wanted to maintain a week between the second and third rounds to once again reset the bubble after having multiple teams in the same spaces.

I actually only knew ratings were bad for the NBA and that's because of Clay Travis. the testing gap makes sense I suppose. but not a ton of sense.

this years set up is as close to exclusive windows for the S16 as you can get and all eyes on one game is what advertisers want these days so be prepared for this to stick unless the Monday/Tuesday ratings crater

:Yuck:
What do you mean when you say exclusive windows? I promise you won't see anything like this again under the current media contract and that doesn't expire until 2028. The Monday and Tuesday games work much better for TNT and TBS, but they aren't as good for CBS.
CBS had essentially the same rating for the games last Monday than they did with the primetime lineup the Monday before which was about 6 Million viewers. They were second in ratings last Monday but they didn't have the bachelor or, they finished behind the voice and that number would have finished in third the week before, just like their regular line up.
However, the 4 million they got on the first night of the tournament won the ratings by far, because again Friday night is a network television dead zone. I really don't think that CBS is willing just going to give away two weeks, in the March book, of kicking the crap out of the other networks for just another week of MacGyver and Magnum P.I.

playing the S16 on Saturday & Sunday means every cbb fan is watching 1 game instead of switching between 2 on Thursday or Friday night. This is similar to how the 2:30 time slot on cfb saturdays and 3 pm nfl sundays have moved to fewer games in the last few years.

The networks don't care about that, they only care about ratings and ad revenue. The ratings are and always have been terrible on those afternoon weekend games, especially the Saturday slot.
Anyway, that's neither here or there because the schedule isn't changing before 2028 anyway because of the complex media deal involving split rights. The NCAA also has sites and dates booked for the preliminary rounds through 2024.
Now when the tournament eventually makes it to 96 teams, then we'll see a different schedule. First week will probably go Thursday-Tuesday, second weekend Friday-Monday, final four unchanged.

We'll see what kind of hit they take on Mon/Tues E8 games.

I like this format much better except the S16 and E8 games should start an hour earlier
-
Why would you rather have 4 games to watch on Thursday and Friday and only 2 Saturday and Sunday? If you’re trying to minimize time commitment by having more games overlap I don’t think that is their target.

Yes, you're probably right. It's rational to think CBS will tear up their media rights contract with 7 years left on it, and the NCAA will renegotiate the contracts they've already signed with all of the facilities for the next three years, and the cities, facility management companies, and pro sports teams who own these facilities, along with all of the hotels in these cities will be completely cool with all of this because 8 games in a 67 game event had a ratings increase of 12%.
I wouldn't be surprised if the elite 8 ratings are up, even though the games were crap and that definitely hurts ratings, but even if they are up, again this isn't changing next year, just like they didn't change formats in 2019 when the ratings were historically shitty.
-
Now when the tournament eventually makes it to 96 teams, then we'll see a different schedule. First week will probably go Thursday-Tuesday, second weekend Friday-Monday, final four unchanged.
looks like S16 on Saturday & Sunday was a success for ratings- i worry this format sticks
as soon as next year :frown:

of course their ratings are up. almost everyone is at home, where there televisions are. not in the office, not at bars.

Believe it or not but the NCAA tournament ratings being up has broken a trend across sports and other live events, like awards shows since the pandemic started. All ratings have been down pretty significantly. The only other exception was nascar last summer but they were historically low before the pandemic and have leveled out since the summer spike.

Pretty easy, it’s a pandemic, I don’t have kids, and I like basketball
It's all the more impressive with a pandemic assuming you didn't go to a bar for the first round where they have all four games on at one time.
I took the Friday off, three YouTube TV streams on my home office setup, the 4th on the TV in the corner!

this was a well executed humblebrag by 8mp that he went to grad school. I'm quite certain I would have dropped out of Thermal Systems Analysis after the first month.
-
That would have been quite embarrassing given that it was a class of 3 people!
-
Way to go the extra mile, 8mp!

Just turned the game on, are they in the dome? LMAO
-
Oh good we're calling timeouts for every possession with two minutes left

Love Johnny Juzang. Don’t love that mustache thing Timme does.
-
what a fun game.

I'm still rooting for the Zags, but UCLA is fun.

HOLY crap

Holy crap!
Congrats Zags! Thank you to UCLA for all the great moments!

Have you watched any of the tournament, literally a third of the entire tournament was in there. Also why is that a LMAO?

Everything I saw was in Hinkle or where the Pacers play. It's funny because it's a waste of money and space

For the rounds before the final four they had two courts in there and they alternated games between them. It was actually clutch this year because they had 90 minutes between games in the same facility instead of the usual 30. They completely cleared the gyms between each match at every site. Having two courts there allowed them to keep the games going without the 90 minute lag the other gyms had.
For the final four, 25% capacity-of the dome is obviously 25% much more of the other gyms used.

I like this women's game! Wish I would have watched more

Feels good to be Scott Drew hive from day one.

Too bad for Baylor that it doesn't really count.

I thought it was only ever really an NBA thing.

College coaches hate it because it generally requires a one on one move or pick and roll and they prefer those only come after 25 seconds of useless passing and running around
-
I was watching late and there was like a seven second difference between shot and game clock and he didn't even start his move until four seconds were left. Could have done that twice bro.

having watched a fair bit of college bball, it is my impression that the college coaches are right to eschew the 2 for 1. the number of turnovers, fouls, oboards, etc that eff up the timing is excessive.

That logic goes out the window when you're willing to just hold the ball for 25 seconds and force a shot at the end of the shot clock anyway.

they shouldn't do that either.

The problem with trying for 2 for 1 in college is that the clock doesn’t stop after a make so if you give up a bucket with 7 seconds, you still probably don’t get a good shot.
-
Also, congrats Sys
-
Do they still wear the highlighter yellow? Seems like a missed opportunity here.

Ah didn't realize they only stopped the clock in the second half

Scott Drew is LHC Bill Snyder, but with 1998 getting the job done.

Vital won’t win MOP, but he was MVP tonight imo. How many Mark Vitals is the right amount to have on a team? Probably 3 Mark Vitals iyam. Maybe 4.

So is covid hadn't washed out the 2020 tournament would Baylor be celebrating its 2nd title? I think very likely yes.
-
hell yeah big 12, feels great

I think this was great for the conference and Beard very well might win one within the next 5 years.

I legit think KU might be 3rd if you were ranking B12 program futures.

If the fact that the sites and dates of play wasn't enough to sway anyone that the ncaa won't be changing to a weekend-early week format for the 2022 tournament, this should do the trick.
https://www.sportsmediawatch.com/2021/04/march-madness-ratings-national-championship-baylor-gonzaga/
The complete NCAA men’s basketball tournament averaged 3.82 million viewers per game, according to The Hollywood Reporter — down 13% from 2019. Despite the strong finish, the tournament had trouble hitting the high notes. Just four of this year’s 66 games cracked the eight million viewer mark, compared to 11 in 2019 and nine in 2018.

i'm not gonna pretend i can be convinced to really watch WBB, but wtf was that last possession in the tourney? Stanford literally quadruple teamed the ball at the top of the key and the AZ player could not figure it out? i don't know if you can see something like that and claim the tournament is better in any real sense. it's like men's college bb vs the nba...you can like CBB more, but it's not cuz of quality of play

I'm not trying to convince you or anyone else to watch anything, especially given you are putting that much stock in one play that resulted in a shot that rimmed out. You professed to not watch then argued with my assessment of the women's quality of play in the later stages of the tournament.
I think it's pretty telling that you focused on a player who panicked and didn't make the right play at the end of a really good game, still almost made the shot. That's contrasted by the men's final which was over by the first media timeout.
Super weird post.

i think it's literally the only play of that tournament i saw, sorry...and i think i also read someone complaining that the play before also sucked...i didn't watch any of the men's final either tho, tbh...
