As a midwesterner, I can't take a compliment. Even from myself.

I am not good at self promotion, pro-tips welcome.

Every damn time I start to feel as if I might indeed be awesome, I have a flashback to some stupid thing I did 10-30 years ago and am reminded that I might be able to string together some awesome days but really I am just a moron.

Speaking from personal experience, i'm also a huge dumbass much of the time. truth. You can be both imo. I think a big part of being awesome is recognizing and owning how dumb/ridiculous we can be.

This is the correct answer.
Just glance at the ground, look up and say "Yeah, I guess I did alright"

You just have to keep telling yourself, it doesn't matter who else thinks so, people are generally haters. But if you can convince yourself you're great, it won't be a problem convincing yourself otherwise. My biggest regret about my youth is not having enough self-confidence to reach my potential, without getting too deep, it's a real problem for African-Americans especially those who grow up in predominantly white environments where self confidence is generally not viewed as a strength.
Personally 7, I'm willing to bet that you are the smartest person in 99.999 rooms you walk in, you should know that and don't be afraid to tell yourself that, because it's true. Stick your chest out and carry yourself as if you don't have an intellectual match and on those rare occasions in which you do revel in it, you have someone you can actually match wits with. Being the smartest guy in the room is a big deal, most people are intimidated by intellect.

I am the smartest person in the room 99.99% of the time. Normally I don’t have to tell myself this, but occasionally I do. Then others speak and I am affirmed.

This.
I have idiot PTSD a lot prior to doing awesome things.

I imagine that you're in the zone where you don't do anything stupid. I'm under the impression that in out 20's we are peak stupid, moving away from it in the 30's, starting to feel ourselves in our 40's, then are in the zone in the 50's. Then the bell curve of great decisions starts to decline in the 60's or so.

Almost 50. Limited bonehead decisions these days.

internalized racism is a mofo. i've made huge strides to become confident and mentally grounded compared to even a few years ago, but i still can't shake feeling less of a person in predominantly white environments.
