I watched a little of their game against UT and am not worried about them one bit. Max Duggan? He's no Jonathan Moxon.

The only reason this may be close is if William Howard III gets some freshman nerves or something silly like that.

Katz -  27
Frog Aggie - 17

All of these teams are so close to each other, they have slightly more talent but we have the coaching edge. The media loves Sweaty Gary but they never talk about how he has the most volatile coaching staff in the conference. He plays musical chairs with his assistants every damn year.

Meacham is actually back at TCU now as WR/TE coach after going from KU to the XFL. Clearly, a wunderkind.

Well, their secondary is probably better than our receivers. Fortunately, our run game should be able to get to the outside and keep the chains moving.

It's really going to come down to if Howard can make the critical throws when we need them.

we don't have a competent o-line, or a QB, and we can't stop the run.  We are losing.

4star kid that wasn't supposed to play this year (found a heart defect he's had since birth with COVID testing). He started most games last year as a true freshman though. Was cleared 2 weeks ago and Gary started a different kid vs ISU. TCU is probably 2-0 instead of ISU if he starts Duggan.

He had over 100 yards rushing against us last year, 50ish yard rushing TD to help get there.

Basically a more highly recruited Jesse Ertz.

So straight up, if Will Howard starts and the O-Line isn't absolutely shite we win. If Will takes shots early and gets discouraged I feel like the game won't go very well.

If Skylar wins, we win by 50.

you dont need a good ground game to run against ksu. i dont like our O-line or our D but somehow we manage to stay in games through big plays and turnovers. if we have a game where we get no turnovers we might get trucked.

Thought he had a few runs vs TT. I would hope he wouldn't think that given that Trotter is a senior and it's not like Deuce is going to do every snap
Title: Re: Open this thread for TCU Talk

Don’t think Jacardia is a risk to transfer, his other competition opted out of the season so he has a major leg up on them.
Title: Re: Open this thread for TCU Talk
Post by: ben ji on October 08, 2020, 12:36:07 PM
Jacardia got a couple of carries early in the game and looked good, I felt like he was on the verge of breaking off a big run on 1 of the carries but a guy grabbed his ankle to bring him down IIRC. Ended up with 3 carries for 12 yards.

If I was the head ball coach at Kansas State U then Jacardia would be getting all of Trotters carries and become the "Thunder" to Duece's "Lightning".

Imagine 4 years of this duo!

Jacardia.apparently missed a read or something when he was on the field and didn't go back. I think if you're playing a true freshman at quarterback it makes sense to play the 5th year senior at running back who is the best blocker at the position and won't miss reads.

Still pissed that play was reviewed and overruled. Dude caught it, controlled it, knee was down, and then it popped out. Terrible call, esp. considering they reviewed it.

Mess seems to be a big fan of “setting up” things for big plays later on. It just sucks that at this point he seems to waste drives to do it sometimes.

He has been pretty good at using the setup to dial up something nice when we need it.

And Have you seen their previous OC, Meacham? The one that ended up going to KU for a few years and KU creamed themselves cause of the MM look. I think that look is a pre-req for that position.

I think the announcers were just morons, one of them also thought it was a blatant and obvious targeting lol. I think it was a good timeout to use- especially if you are uncomfortable with your backup qb trying to get a snap off inside 3 seconds of playclock.

I guess I wasn't paying attention at the time, why did they keep shitting on kli for taking a timeout with 1 second on the play clock?

Brando really needs to be forced into retirement. And Tillman has gotten really bad/sloppy.

TCU OC Cumbie looks like Kroger brand Matt McConaughey

And Have you seen their previous OC, Meacham? The one that ended up going to KU for a few years and KU creamed themselves cause of the MM look. I think that look is a pre-req for that position.

I think he confused Meacham and Cumbie

Yes. They kept showing the guy, and I heard them say Cumbie.

I hope we run Howard like Bill was still calling the plays.

That would be less than ideal. He's very slow and not exactly a battering ram.

 :users:

Got caught and had to settle for a field goal. I won't even talk about that last play. I'm over the moon that we won but that performance was wooftown.

Yes, getting worried he will leave us, which sucks cuz he seems like a very good runner.

Maybe y'all can call him and tell him to learn how to pass block. The adjustor has said, several times, that all Jacardia can do is run the ball and when he's in they can't be "multiple."

Because Tim Brando, normally good, was exceptionally rough ridin' dumb today, for the entire game. I especially loved him calling a first down for TCU a must make when there was 11 minutes left in the game. He might have been a little deep in the bourbon.

I think the announcers were just morons, one of them also thought it was a blatant and obvious targeting lol. I think it was a good timeout to use- especially if you are uncomfortable with your backup qb trying to get a snap off inside 3 seconds of playclock.

That's a good call, he snapped it early the previous two plays.

I'm glad we got the win, the kid played better than Duggan, and did enough to get the win. He was no where close to having what anyone would ever consider a good game, certainly not good enough to get favorably compared to anything Skylar has done.

Howard was 8 for 19 for 117 yards 0 TD 1 INT. Yes, the receivers were steaming polar bear crap, but that line is a horror show. If you take away his 80 yard run, he had 12 runs for 6 yards.

The team was great, the quarterback wasn't, but I that's not an indictment of his future, he may turn out to be Easton Stick, but he sucked today.

I think the kid has potential of being a very good QB.  From his HS game vids he is more of a pro-style than a dual-threat QB.  I was very happy TCU didn't hurt him and he played well for a true freshman.  That's something HCBS never did was use a true freshman QB.

Most of that seems right, but honestly you need to give credit where credit is due: he did do that 80-yard run, and it can’t be taken away. He made that crap happen. And lots of people’s stat lines include huge plays that balloon their numbers, so imo it’s not really fair to say “take away this big play and this player’s stats would’ve sucked!” Especially when, if you took away that 80-yard run, it could possibly have led to him amassing 80 yards worth of stats some other way.

Did he wow me? No. Did he manage the game well enough to help us gut out a win on the road in his first start against a pretty solid TCU team? Yes. Did he have one of the most LOL plays in football history? Yes.

He described our defense as "stout" before the game started (or maybe right after it started). I was like "umm opportunistic maybe....stout?....he hasn't watched us play much this year".

we are stout though.  makes sense that a trained professional would pick up on that.

You need to redefine what "stout" means.  Allowing 21 and 14 in back-to-back weeks is impressive, regardless of how many yards are chewed up.

Also, 3 weeks in a row, K-State's defense has either knocked the opposing QB out of the game, or completely mind-f'd him.

You can't include the TCU game since it hasn't occurred yet when he spoke. Our defense bent and broke often the previous 3 weeks. Nobody was talking up our defense after giving up almost 500 yards avg on our first 3 games. I don't think I need to define what "stout" is, because you and I both know it ain't that.

Yards don’t really matter if you aren’t giving up scores.

Do you even points per drive bro?

its kinda unbelievable that we dont have a backup QB better than Howard. The other guys have been there for a while.
true freshman or not howard was terrible. i dont expect ksu to have 4 great QBs but we should have a backup that can at least play on this level.. i honestly can't think of one aspect of the game howard looked serviceable at. If our D plays like today i think we can still count KU as a win and then thats probably the last win for the year.
What game did you watch today?

Sent from my moto g power using Tapatalk
i watched the same game as you. and i saw a QB who was very inaccurate on the majority of passes. Could not go through any progressions. Made some shocking throws to nowhere. passes were wobbly. had terrible time setting feet in pocket and tripped on own feet several times in one game. to his credit he never fumbled. i dont expect a true freshman to wow anyone my bigger issue is not that howard sucked but that we dont have anyone in the program that could perform better than that.

Skywalker might not get his job back, as this ain't an HCBS team.

Are you on mushrooms?

He's a true freshman and this is his first starting game.  He runs in a TD, runs a 40 yard keeper, and throws a 80 yard pass.  WTF do you think he has to do to make you happy.  Oh don't tell me you like Pete just can't wait to say crap about this kid, of course when he was doing good neither one of you posted.

Yes.

I don't want to take that away from him but when assessing his performance it should be pointed out that play was schemed, according to Klieman's post game press conference, and it wasn't the case of a quarterback making something out of nothing.

I WANT Howard to be good, but I don't know man.  I suppose it's reasonable to believe that with another week of 1st team reps, and another winnable start against KU, that Howard could improve enough to help us win a couple more games after KU.  I don't think there is any way under the sun that we can make it to the championship game with him as our QB, but I'd say that about almost any freshman QB we've ever had.

He definitely made a few plays where you could imagine him evolving into a stud, but yea, he looked like a true freshman out there. If we had Thompson yesterday, we would have wiped TCU.

If you believe the advanced stats _fan posts on KSO we are the 5th best defense in the big 12.  I personally trust my eyes over things like stats but for anyone into those things, that’s what the data says.

the thing brando was confusing me most about was when he was waxing poetic about how much we shorten the game and how it will be critical for tcu to be in 4 down territory the rest of the way b/c of how much clock we chew up. The thing is at the time he said that...with like 11 minutes left in 4th, i'm p sure we hadn't even gotten a first down in the 2nd half. i think it was just 3 and outs to that point, i dunno, maybe like 1 first down. as i was typing this i went and looked it up and we had 1 drive in the 2nd half that lasted 3:05 everything else was less than 3. I think brando was confusing us for '12 cats. Average TOP in 2nd half was 2:18

Re. The stout thing, is the stoutness of the defense more about the fact that they're hard hitting which causes the offense to make more mistakes, that we're capable enough to take advantage of, and less about how many yards they give up? One thing I've noticed about the D, outside of how mean, borderline dirty, we are, is how well we tackle, especially in space. The secondary seem to all be good tacklers, I can't remember a K-State team, the last 15 years, that tackles this well.

yes parker has turned it to an art form. like i get mad at him for missing an open field tackle and then i'm like oh yeah, p much everybody misses those, we are just blessed to have someone who makes them at such a high rate.

also I think the defense concedes yards by design to minimize explosive plays. Like they seem perfectly content to give up a 6 yard gain 3rd and 4 because they know an incompletion or sack will eventually kill the drive and they don't want to give up the big play. The blitzes also seem to be a lot more selective because we can get a decent rush with the front four, which is great!

looks like we've given up 3 30+ yard plays in conference play, which seems pretty good!

tcu D isnt THAT good. decent but middle of the league. weakest part is the DL and we didn't even begin to win the LOS against their weakest link. Howard is going to be running for his life the rest of the season. I would consider any wildcat type runners that could give us an extra blocker and a better runner than howard. we just dont have much talent on the offensive side for options
