Title: Ice Cream Thread
Post by: waks on July 29, 2020, 01:50:25 PM
Do we have an ice cream thread? If not, we should. So here it is...

I had my first Betty Rae's experience over the weekend and I plan on visiting there every time I'm in KC now that I have discovered its greatness. I went because I wanted to try the Joe's KC Burnt Ends BBQ flavor while they have it. It sounded super weird but I ordered a cup of it and devoured it in minutes. Next time I go back I want to try the Apricot Goat Cheese flavor.

Last night I made a quick gas station run to grab some tortilla chips to try a habanero salsa @jmlynch1 made and I thought what could go better with some burn your beehive salsa than a pint of Ben & Jerry's? Snagged some Tonight Dough and crushed that pint after my bag of Tostitos Scoops.

Burnt ends ice cream sounds equal parts stupid and gross

I know but it was kind of good! They make a caramel out of Joe's BBQ Sauce and swirl it in vanilla ice cream with candied burnt ends. Obviously not something I would want everyday but I thought they did a pretty good job pulling it off in spite of it being so weird/stupid/gross.

As I've gotten older, I have a growing appreciation of the subtle complexity of vanilla. It really is delightful.

My God, I love ice cream.

First of all I'm a big fan of Ben and Jerry's the company, the factory in Vermont is awesome. When you go to a Ben and Jerry's in the northeast they sell a 20 scoop sundae called The Vermonster which is fantastic. All that being said, I hate the ice cream they sell in stores, it's crap.

Blue Bell is the best large production ice cream in the country, I'm happy they are back in Kansas after the mass murder thing.

Ashby's out of Michigan is also fantastic.

Blue Bunny here in Iowa is aight, pretty basic they have some great flavors like Fudge Almond and Cherry Chocolate.

The most underrated ice cream and flavor is right there in good ol' Kansas City. Belmonte makes the best mass produced Spumoni. Of course if you can get some locally made spumoni that would be the best ice cream you can find.

Baskin Robbins is meh.

One more thing. Call Hall is very good, as is every on campus creamery across the country, I've ever had. Purple Pride is their best flavor :lick: they gotta ditch those shite paper cartons though, the cream doesn't keep well in those.

Braum's exists for their ice cream. I do wish they'd increase their delivery radius and open some stores out east. Springfield is a heck of a drive for a peanut butter fudge sundae or a two scoop waffle cone with Rocky Road and Peanut Butter Cup.

Blue Bell ice cream is definitely my favorite grocery store ice cream, and it's not even close.  The quality of every flavor blows the others away.

My love of Braum's is well documented, however Braum's popularity is strictly because of where they are located. There are very few legit hard pack ice cream shops in the plains and that helps them because their ice cream is otherwise mediocre. Braum's would struggle in places that have a proliferation of ice cream shops as their food is also mediocre. Their grocery store is fantastic.

There is an Oberweis Ice Cream and Dairy Store just down the street from my place, but I try not to go very often. It is very good. A long time local Illinois dairy that has a bunch of stores in the Chicagoland area.

Tillamook is the best grocery store ice cream out west.  Haven’t had Blue Bell in years to compare but Tillamook could be a strong challenger.

MIR nailed it with campus creameries. Love them. There’s an ice cream truck out here called Udder Rivals that sells both Utah State and BYU ice cream. Haven’t seen them in awhile; hopefully not a COVID casualty.  There’s a small town creamery on I-15 in central Utah that makes makes fantastic ice cream.  It’s often packed with the entire Wasatch front stopping by on the way to and from St George. It’s worth waiting in line for.

I worked at a summer camp back east, and the fav treat was Choco Tacos.  The kids would start chanting "Choco Tacos" with the same chant and clap cadence as the "overrated" chant. It was deafening.  And you know what, they were right. It was worth chanting for.

According to Wikipedia, technically not "Ice cream":

Kulfi is similar to ice cream in appearance and taste but denser and creamier.[2][4] It comes in various flavours. The more traditional ones are cream (malai), rose, mango, cardamom (elaichi), saffron (kesar or zafran), and pistachio. There are newer variations such as apple, orange, strawberry, peanut, and avocado. Unlike ice cream, kulfi is not whipped, resulting in a solid, dense frozen dessert similar to traditional chicken nuggets-based ice cream. Thus, it is sometimes considered a distinct category of frozen dairy-based dessert.[4] Due to its density, kulfi takes a longer time to melt than Western ice cream.

I don't like waffle cones. But the choco taco waffle is soft and gross and the ice cream is just the most generic vanilla over. It's black and white label vanilla ice cream in a thin soggy waffle cone bowl.

choco taco was my go to for middle school lunch that and the snickers ice cream candy bar

I worked at a summer camp back east, and the fav treat was Choco Tacos.  The kids would start chanting "Choco Tacos" with the same chant and clap cadence as the "overrated" chant. It was deafening.  And you know what, they were right. It was worth chanting for.

Same. They also went crazy for “Chipwich,” ice cream smashed between two big chocolate chip cookies. Also, the kids would never stop talking about Friendly’s. I didn’t get it. Then we went to a Friendly’s on a group trip. I got it then.

Choco Tacos are ass.

This is what we had at my camp, so delicious

Yes, the boys of Mah-kee-nak loved them some chipwich.

and where would we be without the choco taco?
they're so much fun after a taco night in america (which is thursdays fwiw)

also, costco sells boxes of drumsticks (vanilla, chocolate fudge, caramel) 15 count for $9.99 i pretty much have a box in my freezer at all times

I have not had a choco taco since I was working at the VIA in high school but I used to crush one every other shift or so. Gonna have to keep an eye out for some choco tacos at the local grocery store.

an ice cream novelty is a hand-held form of ice cream: an ice cream bar, a prepackaged cone or cup, a sandwich or any type of ice cream or ice on a stick.

Sorry your iciq is so low, but I'm here to help you learn

You know what's crazy? I don't consider ice cream that is in a cone to be ice cream. Not technically. I do, however, consider the cone itself to be ice cream. Oh, unless the ice cream in the cone is dipped. In that case, it is also not ice cream. Popsicle sticks are also ice cream as well as the popsicle itself.

No soft serve anywhere is real ice cream, it's crap. Nothing is more disappointing than someone hyping up a great ice cream stand then it turns out to be a shitty soft serve place. The only thing you can do with soft serve to distinguish it is throw a bunch of crap on it. Well guess what, every place throws the same crap on their shitty soft serve.

They used that tag line before you were even birfed. Back in the 80's, when everyone was afraid of people tainting candy, I went trick or treating in a mall in Oklahoma City and we always went to the dipping dots stand, I remember "Ice Cream of the Future" as early as 1982.

Had incredible ice cream today on the Duluth waterfront. It was handmade and I can't describe how fresh the ice cream tasted, and the texture was so smooth, almost like gelato but better. I got a scoop of mint chip, that wasn't green, again fresh, and a scoop of coffee chip. Delicious. My daughter got a flavor called Local Summer Strawberry and it might have been the best ice cream I've ever had. I thought it was strawberry with a hint of lemon but as it turns out it was just locally harvested strawberries. It was amazing. The place was called Crank and Dasher, if you're familiar with Duluth, it is behind Fitgers Brewery.
