Do we have an ice cream thread? If not, we should. So here it is...
I had my first Betty Rae's experience over the weekend and I plan on visiting there every time I'm in KC now that I have discovered its greatness. I went because I wanted to try the Joe's KC Burnt Ends BBQ flavor while they have it. It sounded super weird but I ordered a cup of it and devoured it in minutes. Next time I go back I want to try the Apricot Goat Cheese flavor.
Last night I made a quick gas station run to grab some tortilla chips to try a habanero salsa @jmlynch1 made and I thought what could go better with some burn your beehive salsa than a pint of Ben & Jerry's? Snagged some Tonight Dough and crushed that pint after my bag of Tostitos Scoops.
-
I always go Cherry Garcia or Americone Dream, myself.
-
Phish food or half baked
-
Mint chocolate chip or moose tracks are my go to ice cream flavors the 2 times a year I eat it
-
I think homemade vanilla is my favorite
Burnt ends ice cream sounds equal parts stupid and gross

I know but it was kind of good! They make a caramel out of Joe's BBQ Sauce and swirl it in vanilla ice cream with candied burnt ends. Obviously not something I would want everyday but I thought they did a pretty good job pulling it off in spite of it being so weird/stupid/gross.

As I've gotten older, I have a growing appreciation of the subtle complexity of vanilla. It really is delightful.

My God, I love ice cream.
First of all I'm a big fan of Ben and Jerry's the company, the factory in Vermont is awesome. When you go to a Ben and Jerry's in the northeast they sell a 20 scoop sundae called The Vermonster which is fantastic. All that being said, I hate the ice cream they sell in stores, it's crap.
Blue Bell is the best large production ice cream in the country, I'm happy they are back in Kansas after the mass murder thing.
Ashby's out of Michigan is also fantastic.
Blue Bunny here in Iowa is aight, pretty basic they have some great flavors like Fudge Almond and Cherry Chocolate.
The most underrated ice cream and flavor is right there in good ol' Kansas City. Belmonte makes the best mass produced Spumoni. Of course if you can get some locally made spumoni that would be the best ice cream you can find.
Baskin Robbins is meh.

One more thing. Call Hall is very good, as is every on campus creamery across the country, I've ever had. Purple Pride is their best flavor :lick: they gotta ditch those shite paper cartons though, the cream doesn't keep well in those.

I just want to take a minute to say thank you and that this is the kind of content I craved when I made this page.

Braum's exists for their ice cream. I do wish they'd increase their delivery radius and open some stores out east. Springfield is a heck of a drive for a peanut butter fudge sundae or a two scoop waffle cone with Rocky Road and Peanut Butter Cup.

Blue Bell ice cream is definitely my favorite grocery store ice cream, and it's not even close. The quality of every flavor blows the others away.
-
Welp, I’m getting some “iced cream” today now for sure!
Typical go to is Braum’s peppermint or mint chip.

My love of Braum's is well documented, however Braum's popularity is strictly because of where they are located. There are very few legit hard pack ice cream shops in the plains and that helps them because their ice cream is otherwise mediocre. Braum's would struggle in places that have a proliferation of ice cream shops as their food is also mediocre. Their grocery store is fantastic.
-
There is an Oberweis Ice Cream and Dairy Store just down the street from my place, but I try not to go very often. It is very good. A long time local Illinois dairy that has a bunch of stores in the Chicagoland area.

It would be cool if they put Braum's stores in food deserts.

Could well be the nostalgia. Plenty of great childhood memories with family long gone at Braum's.
-
Tillamook is the best grocery store ice cream out west. Haven’t had Blue Bell in years to compare but Tillamook could be a strong challenger.
MIR nailed it with campus creameries. Love them. There’s an ice cream truck out here called Udder Rivals that sells both Utah State and BYU ice cream. Haven’t seen them in awhile; hopefully not a COVID casualty. There’s a small town creamery on I-15 in central Utah that makes makes fantastic ice cream. It’s often packed with the entire Wasatch front stopping by on the way to and from St George. It’s worth waiting in line for.

I worked at a summer camp back east, and the fav treat was Choco Tacos. The kids would start chanting "Choco Tacos" with the same chant and clap cadence as the "overrated" chant. It was deafening. And you know what, they were right. It was worth chanting for.

The best ice cream sandwich genre treat I have had is the cookie ice cream sandy from Trader Joe's

an ice cream novelty is a hand-held form of ice cream: an ice cream bar, a prepackaged cone or cup, a sandwich or any type of ice cream or ice on a stick.
Sorry your iciq is so low, but I'm here to help you learn

Who doesn't have fond childhood memories of going down to the soda fountain and asking the soda jerk for a delicious ice cream novelty?

According to Wikipedia, technically not "Ice cream":
Kulfi is similar to ice cream in appearance and taste but denser and creamier.[2][4] It comes in various flavours. The more traditional ones are cream (malai), rose, mango, cardamom (elaichi), saffron (kesar or zafran), and pistachio. There are newer variations such as apple, orange, strawberry, peanut, and avocado. Unlike ice cream, kulfi is not whipped, resulting in a solid, dense frozen dessert similar to traditional chicken nuggets-based ice cream. Thus, it is sometimes considered a distinct category of frozen dairy-based dessert.[4] Due to its density, kulfi takes a longer time to melt than Western ice cream.

they're ice cream
does an ice cream cone not count because it comes in a cone vs a bowl with a spoon?
what about the old school cups of ice cream from school that you would eat with that little wooden spoon?

you pro-novelty crew have lost it

I don't like waffle cones. But the choco taco waffle is soft and gross and the ice cream is just the most generic vanilla over. It's black and white label vanilla ice cream in a thin soggy waffle cone bowl.

Anyone tried the McDonalds novelty ice cream slushie? I had the blue kind and it was good!

Novelties are just ice cream, but kinkier.

Still working on the home made brown bread ice cream we had cor the 4th. Maple syrup or brown sugar variations with grape nuts mixed in it.

It's surprising how many places don't sell real ice cream soft serve. Most of the time it's ice milk, chicken nuggets, or yogurt.

You know what's crazy? I don't consider ice cream that is in a cone to be ice cream. Not technically. I do, however, consider the cone itself to be ice cream. Oh, unless the ice cream in the cone is dipped. In that case, it is also not ice cream. Popsicle sticks are also ice cream as well as the popsicle itself.

No soft serve anywhere is real ice cream, it's crap. Nothing is more disappointing than someone hyping up a great ice cream stand then it turns out to be a shitty soft serve place. The only thing you can do with soft serve to distinguish it is throw a bunch of crap on it. Well guess what, every place throws the same crap on their shitty soft serve.

You do know that they are made with raw eggs. I think that's why they quit selling them. I think they were in every mall in the '80's and I would watch them make an OJ. I never could bring myself to drink one.

They used that tag line before you were even birfed. Back in the 80's, when everyone was afraid of people tainting candy, I went trick or treating in a mall in Oklahoma City and we always went to the dipping dots stand, I remember "Ice Cream of the Future" as early as 1982.

It's literally a labeled section of the grocery store

I should probably start buying this stuff. Luckily I live alone and the dog isn't bothered by horrible ice cream farts

There’s ice cream and there are frozen novelties.

Ice cream is for poor people.

Looking good. This reminds me, I don't know what ice cream brand insomnia cookie uses but their ice cream is much better than expected.

Blue Bunny Butter Brickle is my go to. Unfortunately it's been hard to find lately.
DQ is trash. Dumped a Blizzard in the sink one night. Still lumped in the sink the next morning. That's the last time I had any. Hard pass on all those chemicals.

someone get @nicname's label maker for this post. jfc
The county here in Iowa where they are located had been a hot spot and their production is way down.
I've only ever seen it packaged in the square boxes. A lot of stores only are carrying the oval tubs.

i've prob said before, but Chickfila vanilla ice cream is so good. tastes like old fashioned homemade ice cream to me.

Softserve? I'll give it a shot on your recommendo. Their shakes are quite good.

Ice cream is for poor people.
Checks out. Young nicname very much looked forward to $.25 cones from Bosselman’s truck stop. Young nicname was also very poor.

Very fattening.

Frozen chicken nuggets is like the farthest thing from ice cream and ice cream novelties. Discussion of it should probably go in the pizza thread.

Never had sheridans. Love Freddy's. Have you had Andy's? Big fan.

i'm glad someone else confirmed B&J's grocery store offerings are kind of trash. blue bell has the texture nailed down.

Better than McDonald's, not as good as a frosty. It's pretty indistinguishable soft serve.

Blue Bell has it all down. However, the last time I got it was from a Price Chopper from somewhere on the Kansas side, near the gas station Joe's KC, and all three of my 1/2 gallons had rough ridin' ice crystals :curse:

Had incredible ice cream today on the Duluth waterfront. It was handmade and I can't describe how fresh the ice cream tasted, and the texture was so smooth, almost like gelato but better. I got a scoop of mint chip, that wasn't green, again fresh, and a scoop of coffee chip. Delicious. My daughter got a flavor called Local Summer Strawberry and it might have been the best ice cream I've ever had. I thought it was strawberry with a hint of lemon but as it turns out it was just locally harvested strawberries. It was amazing. The place was called Crank and Dasher, if you're familiar with Duluth, it is behind Fitgers Brewery.

MIR cleans out the mint chip, then waits outside for the girl working there to come out and put the SOLD OUT masking tape so he can take a picture and rub it in our fat faces.
Sounds incredible tho. I would have done the same.

Yeah, I had the last of the mint chip and my oldest kid had the last of the mango lime sorbet. I didn't try that as sorbet is not ice cream :Yuck:

The best ice cream sandwich genre treat I have had is the cookie ice cream sandy from Trader Joe's

You know what’s great? A $0.99 vanilla cone from QT. I get them half as tall as they normally make them.
It’s 104 degrees out. I’ll run into QT and get a large ice water in a foam cup & a vanilla cone for $1.50.

Damn. I was just looking for these the other day.
I worked a summer at Camp Windadu in the Berkshire Mountains in Massachusetts, and at EVERY rough ridin' MEAL the kids would all chant "Choco Taco" to the same beat as "Let's go wildcats." I hope they now start chanting "Let's go wildcats" instead. I tried, but it did not catch on at the time.

I did the same at camp Mah-Kee-Nak. Very similar chants were heard. It was either Choco Taco or Chipwich. Best summer job ever.

middle school lunch and it was fantastic

I definitely have had one in the last 5 years.
-
This is a crushing blow. Trips to Taco John's will never be the same.
-
when was the last time any of you fuckers actually had a CT?
probably a few months ago. They were a staple in the EMS rooms at HCA hospitals. I knew something was up last week when they were replaced by ice cream sandwiches.

Has anyone else seen the pic in Call Hall of Lynn Dickey promoting the introduction of Purple Pride? Noted it for the first time yesterday, kind of like a proto-NIL moment.
