Title: Denis & the Dobermans v Xavier replay
Post by: tdaver on March 26, 2020, 12:11:34 AM
Hey guys!  Remember when KSU basketball was fun?  I miss that.  We should do it again.  How about this Friday for a couple hours?

I will say, fun to have re-watched it. I really only focused on the end of the 2nd half and the OTs. But still:

1. I don't think I can ever forgive that ref for not calling that foul on Denis instead of Merriweather. Literally the difference between that game going into OT and not. While it gave us that great game, I still think playing 1.25 games vs 1 meant we were too tired vs Butler to make it to the FF. And once we got there, I liked our chances vs MSU and eventually Duke. Would we have done it? Probably no, but I absolutely think 2 OTs killed us vs Butler and we'd have won that game have the goddamn ref called the right foul vs the right person, and it be 2 shots vs 3, and we walk off with a close win in regulation.

2. It really amazed me in retrospect how it really seemed like we were the team in control, but Xavier hit clutch shot after clutch shot to keep themselves in. Kinda obvious but in the moment it seemed more a titanic struggle, 10 years (holy crap) since, it seemed like we had it and we just couldn't stop the clutch until they couldn't anymore.

3. CK Kelly was amazing, Denis and Jpullz desire a lot of credit, but on both sides of the floor Curtis did the small and big things it took for us to win and doesn't deserve enough credit in that win.

4. I love and miss Jamar Samuels, clear difference maker in the right time.

I had forgotten what it was like to have a true/legit point guard. Kind of amazing that it's been 10 years since we've had one.

Yep, I saw that and determined that because Kam played with Barry as his other guard and Angel had Will rough ridin' Spradling and Manu Lecompte that Kam was better. I do think Angel is better equipped to have a high usage rate though, he's a poor man's Cartier Diarra. Kam was much more JYC than Angel could ever hope to be.

Kam was honorable mention all-B12 once. Angel was 2nd team and 1st team all defense as a sophomore. Plus Angel was better than Kam in basically everu way.

Angel might be the most overrated/hyped player oat at K-State.
Complete list of K-State players to make 2nd team Big XII or better by sophomore year:

1. Beasley (1st, Fr.)
2. Foster (2nd, Fr.)
3. Angel (2nd, So.)

Pullen made honorable mention, Walker and McGruder each made 3rd team.

Those honorable mention players you just listed have logged way more minutes in the league than Angel. His failed attempt vs La Salle at the end of that comeback is what I’ll remember him for. He was a set shooter and couldn’t create his own shot. People love him because he was attached to Frank for awhile and was lil and saucy and the closest thing we could get to a Denis clone at that time. I don’t hate him, but his best year was due to Weber’s offense and then he left and thrived at Miami.

Also, people forget this, but Kam’s projectory was set to be better than Brown’s before all of his injuries. He took over that North Carolina game. I really wonder where he would have ended up if the injuries didn’t occur.

Which should probably tell you that's a pretty poor metric of how to evaluate him compared to other recent K-State players.

I know that I don't have a statistical leg to stand on, but I do think that it should be accounted for that Angel had to do more. Angel never had to play with players like Brown and Wade, and I don't think he would have been a great fit. Also Kam was a much better defender, I'll never forget how badly Angel got cooked by Brady Heslip.

If throwing lobs to JO is a set shot I agree with this.

Throwing lobs to JO is the far and away the most elite thing he did, maybe the most elite thing anything in a K-State uniform has ever done.

Def had to look at the page to know who Manu Lecompte was.  Besides the NBA thing, it showed that McClellan and Reed were the two guards that played the most minutes along with Angel, and that Lecompte was smaller than Angel.  McClellan and Reed were also the 2 and 3 with Angel at the 1 at the 2nd-to-last college basketball game I've ever been to!
