Title: working from home 101
Post by: mocat on March 12, 2020, 02:22:30 PM
WFH veterans post pro tips itt

how do you stay focused?
is it ethical to take a long break for a bike ride or a siesta or book or whatever leisure activity?
how do you avoid eating the entire time?
should you put on "real" clothes to get in the right "mindset"?
modelo season opens in about 9 days; what time does 5pm roll around when W'ingFH?
do you find yourself actually being more productive / efficient with your time?
is it frowned upon to call a coworker on the phone if you need to actually talk through something?

how do you stay focused?

  No.

is it ethical to take a long break for a bike ride or a siesta or book or whatever leisure activity?

  No idea.

how do you avoid eating the entire time?

  Impossible.

should you put on "real" clothes to get in the right "mindset"?

  Lol no.

modelo season opens in about 9 days; what time does 5pm roll around when W'ingFH?

  4pm at the latest.

do you find yourself actually being more productive / efficient with your time?

I get way more of my personal crap done.

is it frowned upon to call a coworker on the phone if you need to actually talk through something?

You're all alone on an island.

I prefer to go to the library because I don't get crap done at home. Doesn't really work if you're wanting to quarantine

how do you stay focused?

I try and set daily goals for myself

is it ethical to take a long break for a bike ride or a siesta or book or whatever leisure activity?

I usually go swim laps around 9 or 10 and give the dog a walk around 1 or 2. You need it for sanity purposes.

how do you avoid eating the entire time?

PLan your meals and stay active. See above. Protein bar in the morning. Make a salad or wrap for lunch. Make sure you have healthish snacks in case you need something around 3.

should you put on "real" clothes to get in the right "mindset"?

I wear K-State sweatpants everyday. I got 5 pairs for Christmas. The joke was "work clothes"

modelo season opens in about 9 days; what time does 5pm roll around when W'ingFH?

I don't usually drink unless it's a Friday lunch and then it's fair game with the wife. Shoot for 5 on other days I want a cocktail.

do you find yourself actually being more productive / efficient with your time?

Yes. Nobody bothers me. I've had a lot of success doing this, this past year. Anxiety has went down a TON!

is it frowned upon to call a coworker on the phone if you need to actually talk through something?

Nah. It's nice sometimes. You'll probably find yourself talking too long because you miss the interaction from time to time

how do you stay focused? I naturally hate to have anything on my to do list so I just do all of it really fast and then just field calls and questions and eff off all day.
is it ethical to take a long break for a bike ride or a siesta or book or whatever leisure activity? yes, this is fine. when really hungover I'll just crank the volume on my laptop IM/email tone and rest my eyes on my bed all day. Or, just go to the bar in the afternoon with the work bros and get hammered with our laptops and phones and do important business drinking
how do you avoid eating the entire time? drink a lot of coffee. routine is good. I have a set time that my body is used to where I get coffee 1 and 2, lunch break, etc. You'll just adjust to it.
should you put on "real" clothes to get in the right "mindset"? No, this is stupid
modelo season opens in about 9 days; what time does 5pm roll around when W'ingFH? Just whenever
do you find yourself actually being more productive / efficient with your time? Yes
is it frowned upon to call a coworker on the phone if you need to actually talk through something? why would it be? I'm confused by this.

make sure you have a designated office space. If you have an actual home office perfect. if you have a spare room turn it into the office. get it set up like an actual office and not just a desk. that's another tip.

Yeah, the basement is a lot of fun, but I could see it as a concern for some. I have a putting course, PS4, etc. I'm usually pretty good at avoiding it most of the time.

kind of like when puni said it was an extreme faux pas if you try to go talk to a coworker during J-nap time.
i suppose the quarantine situation makes it different. if i was WFH like on a normal sick day i would be annoyed if someone called me for a stupid question that could have been handled via email

Plan a little bit to keep from eating all day.

No need to get real life dressed but I like to shower everyday. Don’t get gross.

Agree with SD that the best plan is to knock everything out immediately and the deal with whatever comes up. You can then eff around large portions of the day with a clear conscience.

Also, keep a tight calendar and check it every morning. I had a million reminders in an office and was always there so it wasn’t a big deal to me but had to tighten that up at home.

We got an email last night saying that starting next week we have the OPTION to work from home. Many of us already work from home when there’s a good reason like kids being sick or have a dr appointment or whatever. Had a follow up conference call encouraging us to continue focusing on meeting client expectations.

Folks have not been very inspired by leadership so far.

I should add that most of the people I work with are very smart and recognize the virus is probably already a widespread outbreak and that school, daycare, and other closures are imminent.

The company strategy so far seems to be we’re gonna do our best to work around this and hope it doesn’t get too bad.

I don't particularly like my work and am only self motivated to do things I enjoy. If we are forced to work from home I'll probably do just enough to slip through the cracks for a couple months before getting fired.

I think it's crazy to make it optional. If you can get ANYTHING done at home your employer should make it mandatory

Sounds like the company is suggesting to remain productive based upon your options of where you can work, to remain profitable through this situation. Sound logic.
Title: Re: working from home 101
Post by: catastrophe on March 13, 2020, 08:14:23 PM
It’s very logical for the partners who want to make the same fat profits they enjoyed last year. Everyone is kind of seeing that.

I’m not a partner or whatever, but I am very concerned about how this will effect the economy and how it will effect the progress I’ve made with my company. I’m up for promotion and I’m selfishly thinking about how this will effect my family, if we all come out of this decently. I think it’s fair to question what’s happening and to ask everyone to continue to try their hardest and not take advantage of the situation. Science would probably suggest: people will slack off.

Came home and Mrs 8 has company issued Microsoft Surface to test work from home.  #2 son  has instrux on how to login to his company's system.

He still must risk infection by going in each week to print checks.

My office in the span of 24 hours went from a 50 pct work from home target to everyone GTFO.  We cant procure enough RSA fobs to get everyone access.

I just want refund of 1% KC earnings tax when this is over in July.

Got caught drinking a Corona on 3 pm VCC last week while still on WFH during hip recovery.

Listen Jack, was a good one and I thought the same as it sounds so it would probably have to go back and to figure out how the other things would get back in time and I think it’s pretty obvious to the other people who are probably not going there to get them back in time to do with the kids.

Science would suggest that many many more people will die if people continue to go about business as usual.

Sent our department home yesterday for at minimum three weeks. They would have just freaked out and talked to each other about how they shouldn't be there anyways.

Most jobs can be done anywhere now and there is no reason social distancing should negatively impact many industries but RIP the hospitality industry. This is like 9/11 x1000000

So, there are probably a lot of people with kids in the house that are out of school, trying to actually make a living while the world melts away. I am a work-from-home veteran. Here are my tips:

1) If at all possible, establish a place in your house that is your office. Wake up, have breakfast, and then "commute" to your office, even if it means just walking up stairs to the guest room or kicking your spouse out of your bedroom.

2) Your kids / family are not allowed to bother you while you are at the office. If they need something, they should send you an email or text and ask you for help. If it makes sense to take some time out of your work day, "commute" home, fix the issue, and then "commute" back to work.

3) Interruptions to your work day without the proper notification should not be tolerated unless someone is bleeding. Try to foster an understanding that this is just like mommy / daddy being 15 miles away at the office, and only bother me when it would make sense to call my office and ask for help.

4) Get your stuff done, and then "commute" home at the end of the day. Once you are no longer in your office, treat your home like you have treated it before. Answer any emails you would have, etc, but have the mindset that you are now home, and no longer on the job.

tl;dr - it is better to set up a barrier between home life and work life, even if you never leave the house. Blnding those two during the work day and after the work day is likely to lead to more strife.

Good tips. My 3 yo does not subscribe to them. My 6 yo kind of does.

Yesterday mid meeting emergencies:

- 3 yo needs her bottom wiped
- 3 yo was murdered by 6 yo (he won’t share the plastic plates with her. No, not the WHITE ones the BLUE ones!”
- 3 yo was murdered by 6 yo (he won’t play a game with her)
- 3 yo was murdered by hunger (wants fruit snacks)
- 3 yo old was murdered by hunger (same sitting, has finished fruit snacks, wants something else)

All,

We are working on a return to work plan following the CDC and government guidelines. If you would like to return to the office at this time, please send me a email. Once I hear from the majority of the people working remotely, I will develop a protocol to begin the process. This is optional at this time.

Please do not reply to ALL and just to me with your response.

My company has a huge campus that is probably only half full when there isn’t a pandemic, so there is no way they are going to allow WFH longer than they have to.

So, my airpods are about 3 years old now and they will run from 100% to 10% in about 40 minutes now.  I blame part of this on me running them thru the washer and dryer about 2 years ago.  So, I'm going to buy some new ones.  Is there a big difference between the standard airpods and the airpod pros?

Key to a fabulous home setup is a quality headset for video and audio calls.

Happy to point someone in the right direction if they want a quality headset.

My home setup includes dual 24" Samsung displays, Microsoft LifeCam, Poly Voyager 8200 UC Headset, docking station for laptop (so gives me 3 screens total), and wireless Logitech keyboard and mouse.

Pro-Tip:  Small Cell doesn't increase capacity of master node switch site.   Small cell improves coverage, doesn't do anything for capacity.

Is this, or was this, everyone's experience?

My days haven't been longer, but I did have an increase in meetings. That mostly had to do with going over new guidance in working for home and other changes we had to make as a result of doing everything electronically and virtually. The increase in e-mails has been the worst aspect, but I think that has to do with the population I work with being stuck at home and e-mailing me with every little thing that pops in their head.

I'm fine with those downsides given it means I can roll out of bed at 7:55am, and I can wear basketball shorts all day, everyday.

I have definitely had more meetings. Not really longer days, even pre-COVID we had a pretty laid back work schedule. Basically as long as I show up before 10AM, don’t miss meetings, get my work done, and can do off hour deployments I’m fine. WFH made all of that even easier, also we extended our WFH until the end of the year today.

more meetings, not really more emails. And I'm pretty good at shutting it down at 5 or so to cook dinner. But I deal with physical products and everything takes soooooo much longer than it would if I could travel to see suppliers and be in the office with larger groups.

right now it's kind of a weird spot because there are some activities for the kids that are open that I need to haul them to and no one is carpooling, so I need to take time out of the middle of the day to do things. :frown:

On the flip side, I don't hesitate to take a 2pm nap if I have a block without meetings, so whatever.

Meetings spiked early and have settled. I block time each week for no meetings on Outlook. Keeps people from dropping on me when I'm "free".

No travel has been nice. Stretchy shorts and t-shirts every day. Pull on a golf shirt for video meetings.

Email is about the same. We're spread over four states. So email was already part of the game

I'm loving the crap out of not commuting for an hour every day as well as wearing shorts and a t shirt.  Meetings increased a tiny bit early on but have gone back down to normal.  I do need to upgrade my chair though.  The padding in the seat just isn't enough.  I could probably go in to the building and take my chair from there, it is super comfortable and I think they have been letting people take equipment home.

I am currently on a WebEx call with 95 people and apparently the mods either don't have or don't know how to mute all and it such a clusterfuck.  Some guy ordering at a drive-thru, multiple people yelling at their kids and even more coughing and sneezing.  It's embarrassing that people I work with are this dumb.

Back from furlough and into the home office as of yesterday!  I got switched teams which sucks because I liked my old boss but I think I went from middle of the pack on my old team to tops on this one, so that'll be interesting.

The past couple of weeks I have been doing coworking sessions with some friends. We are all a part of the same discord and I play poker with this group every Saturday night and other games too. We have been hopping in video chat and listening to music. It's been nice, very chill and we just listen to music and work throughout the day, some come and go as meetings come up. It's as close to being back in the office as you can get, we all work in IT too.

None of these people are work people. I chat via Discord with these friends all day anyway so it's very chill. Like right now we have people from NY, Cali, Texas, Miss, London and Hungary in here.

If there’s one thing lawyers actually care about it’s billable hours.

The reason for making people come in is that they own a giant office building and want to use it.  The reason they're only making us come in 2 days a week is that during the pandemic the company's recruiters found out that people didn't want to work for a company that made them come into the office 5 days a week.

My boss hates wfh but can't argue with the numbers. We're crushing it and senior managers are forcing a permanent wfh policy. We'll be converting office space to warehouse storage over the next year.

What is the difference between the overhead with no one there or the overhead with everyone there? It appears as 100% sunk cost to me.

it’s way more expensive to have people in the office, but old balls don’t care.  ultimately though, their hand will be forced by two things - competition allowing wfh full time and generating higher margin, and second, good talent not wanting to work in offices

The people who made the decision to sign the lease don't want to admit it was a loss.

AND, I am convinced there is a portion of the human race that just completely gets off on the feeling of walking around and being a "boss" with others sucking up to them.  If everyone is working from home, it's not as pleasurable for them.

and as I've said several times, people will want to be in the office to suck up to the boss. Face time is valuable especially when promotions and stuff are rarely based purely on results.

also, my company is going 2-3 days/week "depending on business need" for most people and also reducing office sq. footage overall. No more assigned desks for most people.

Also non-vaxxed folks need to mask up.

We've switched to a hybrid model, but it's basically just come and go as you please for people in my position. A lot of people don't go in at all. I usually go in 1-2 days a week.

They asked employees how often they're in the office, and people who are in the office 50% or more of the time who aren't fully vacinated are subject to surveillance testing.
