Title: Most Forgettable State?
Post by: ben ji on February 20, 2020, 09:44:37 AM
Its gotta be Delaware right? I think I went the past 2 years without thinking about the state for more than 2 seconds at a time, just a weird forgettable state IMO. Why is it even a state? If you gave the entire Delmarva Peninsula to Maryland tomorrow 95% of people in this country wouldn't even notice until they looked closely at the new American Flag.

Here are some more data points to back up my argument

- 2nd smallest state by size and 5th smallest by population.

-Their largest city is only 70k people and is a suburb of a larger city in another state.

- The most famous person to come out of their state is Joe Flacco

-They only have 3 county's for the entire state. THREE COUNTYS! Here in KS if the wind is right I could kick a cotton ball from Sherman to Ellis County.

- Its in the Northeast but 90% of the state is hayseed chicken farmers or carny's spending the winter tinkering with the teacup ride. The other 10% exists to dodge taxes.

Another data point as to why Delaware is the most forgettable state.

- You never travel through it to get to another state. Maybe you spend like 5 Minutes zipping through the 10% of the state that is a suburb of Philly but you just assume you are in Pennsylvania and once again forget that Delaware even exists.

Delaware is very forgettable. Half of the credit card industry is in Delaware, though. Why are states like Connecticut and Rhode Island less forgettable than Delaware?

some really great points being made ITT i think it absolutely comes down to NH or Delaware. IMHO i would give it to Delaware because geographically, I thought it was way further north like over by Maine or w/e. Did not even realize it just sorta squirmed in there between NJ and Maryland.

I guess what i'm trying to say is if the news put up an image of say like, Rhode Island getting hit by a nuclear bomb but they didn't say what state it was they just showed the spot on the map that got hit i would be all like "OMG no! not...um...delaware? rh- no,"

This is a very good point.

Besides being non newsworthy no one is actually sure where Delaware is. You never drive through it like other states and it can't even claim the honor of being the smallest state like Rhode Island.

I just don't think they have much going on other than beauty in some parts. I like to think of states for tourism, big cities, and sports teams. When I lived in Colorado growing up, the only time we went to Wyoming was to get illegal fireworks. Allegedly.  :fatty:

Idaho is underrated as far as quality goes but it may very well be forgettable.  Dakotas get a pass because there are two of them, which makes them less forgettable.  New Hampshire/Vermont get a bit of a pass because, like the Dakotas, if I remember one then I will get the other one.

Delaware seems like the right answer.

Title: Re: Most Forgettable State?

Maybe Delaware is the answer if you are west of the Mississippi and Idaho is the answer if you're east of it.

no question it's Delaware. And I bet shitloads of companies are technically based there because of tax stuff or something.

Idaho has great nature/mountains plus Boise State blue turf plus potatoes plus the nazis that make it memorable

Kansas.

People remember it for being flat! Shitloads of people have driven through it for like a long time and not like the sliver of delaware someone may drive through. source: everyone I talk to about Kansas

also aren't the jayhawks from there?

Connecticut is the Johnson County of New York City.  I live in Johnson County and like it, so there I am against calling Connecticut forgettable.

Delaware is way too important to our legal system to forget.  However, we should abolish those laws and then in the spirit of the OP, just merge Delaware with Pennsylvania or New Jersey or something.

Nebraska is less forgettable than Kansas, just because of their anti-american unicameral system...which should be abolished and Nebraska should be annexed by Iowa to form a more memorable super wide state.

However, the best plan is to merge Kansas, Nebraska, Iowa, South Dakota, and North Dakota in to the new state called Northern Texas.  Under NO circumstances should Oklahoma be included, but we will listen plans to include Colorado counties east of Denver.

This is a good one. There is nothing that sets Iowa apart from any of its neighboring states so it just kind of blends in.

The only reason Iowa is not on the Delaware/New Hampshire level of forgettableness is because they have some D1 College teams that play(and suck) in sports I care about.

Alright here is my definitive list of what makes a state forgettable, feel free to add on anything I'm missing.

1. No one travels there or through there to get to another place.

2. No professional sport teams or P5 NCAA programs.

3. No famous movies/historical events took place there.

4. You have to google their most famous resident.

5. They have absolutely zero impact on the daily lives of most americans, like the whole state could disappear and it would take CNN 3 days to write an article called "Where did Delaware go?"

Delaware is a huge hub for incorporation and sets the standard for a lot of business law. Rhode Island is known for being tiny and Idaho has potatoes and that weird shape. Most forgettable IMO is probably either New Mexico or Indiana. New Mexico cause it’s one of those boxy states with like 1-2 livable cities, and Indiana cause most of the time I think it’s either Illinois or Ohio.

indiana is much more forgettable than iowa, within the category of corn states.

Bob Knight is the only reason Indiana is less forgettable than Iowa although much like Mr. Knight that lead is slowly withering away.

If someone told me with absolute confidence that Indianapolis was in Illinois, I don’t think I would challenge them without looking it up first.
I mean the name of the state is literally in the name of the city so sounds like a you problem

You're right.  When I was in Japan, a Japanese guy came up and started talking to me in broken English.  He asked what state I was from after I said US and then proceeded to say Tornado and Wizard.  No rough ridin' way he had anything lined up for Delaware
